Mrs Darcy Versus the Aliens
A year or two into her marriage, Elizabeth Darcy has much on her mind: she has still not produced an heir for Mr Darcy, there are preparations to be made for the Pemberly summer ball, and her youngest sister Lydia has been abducted by aliens. As Regency England sleepwalks towards tentacled oblivion, will she be able to reunite with her old foe Wickham and put a stop to the...more

Fresh from Salt Publishing’s new genre imprint, Proxima, this is a tentacle-heavy Austen homage for fans of Blackadder-style innuendo and puns that would make the Pope groan. The truth is out there, though it is not yet universally acknowledged.
The cast of Pride and Prejudice are carrying on much as we left them, though Jane and Charlie Bingley are having financial problems (something to do with an African Princess’s bank account and an ill-advise...more

Unlike most typical Jane Austen remix/mashups, Mrs Darcy versus the Aliens completely reinterprets the material while staying, in my opinion, true to the Austen characters. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books and I’m not a fan of most attempts to mess with it, but this alternative perspective on Elizabeth’s married life felt fresh and original – and it’s spit-your-coffee-out funny the whole way through. Definitely best for readers who don’t mind a few tentacles with their fiction an...more

I recently won a signed copy of Mrs Darcy Versus The Aliens, published by Salt’s science fiction and fantasy imprint, Proxima Books.
I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and it was fun for the first couple of chapters. But honestly, it was a cut and shut job. A sprinkle of zombie sentences within the original story. But Mrs Darcy Versus The Aliens by Jonathan Pinnock is different. Firstly, Mrs D is a sequel to the events in...more

I've not been reading much lately, what with..well, everything. Decided to wind myself in gently and read something which promised to be entertaining - plus I am a huge Jane Austen fan (poor, poor Jane...)and I loved it! Quite a few groan-out-loud puns, some wit, quite a lot of running-about and a massive amount of Evil. This is a subversive look at the world of Jane A, her characters and tentacles, but no-one who isn't familiar with the whole Austen movement should allow themselves to be put of...more

Not quite as clever as Mr. Darcy, Vampyre, nor quite as funny as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but still a fun read. Pinnock pits our beloved Elizabeth against invaders from another planet and, on the whole, it does well, but some of the pop-culture in-jokes will probably not age quite as well as the ones based on more classic areas. This really is a major mash-up, not just between Austen and aliens, but also time, as the Regency meets the Victorian age too.

Mrs Darcy Versus The Aliens – Jonathan Pinnock
You know that feeling when you're reading about how much Mr Darcy ardently admires our dear Miss Elizabeth Bennett, and you can't stop thinking 'man, this scene would be so much more romantic if Darcy just had tentacles!'. No? Well Jonathan Pinnock has provided it for you anyway.

A humorous follow up to Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' but then you probably already know that. A fun, madcap read with aliens (duh!), tentacles, ghosts, alien babies and dirigibles (one of my favourite words), some of the humour had me laughing aloud and some groaning. Dude! Of course, I then had to relay the humorous bits to whoever was in the vicinity.
An enjoyable read.
