I had very high expectations on this book, not because of the name printed on the front (Joseph Gordon-Levitt that is), but because I love the plain idea of a collaborate book consisting of works by different people. I genuinely believe this idea is a good way of sharing art, because it shows that the range of imagination is so vast. And the first sentence is just fantastic: "The universe is not made of atoms; it's made of tiny stories.

I purchased this today and read it in one delicious gulp on the train on the way home. It was utterly lovely, and the illustrations throughout are beautiful. Very inventive and such a lovely idea. My favourite was 'You're gone. No mailing address. But I send you letters anyway'.

It’s a great beginning to a very tiny book. The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 1 by hitRECord and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Actually, the great beginning was the end paper. It’s full of tiny drawings and all the detail and work that went into it are just amazing.

Then, there are the stories — they are truly tiny. Maybe a sentence or two, with a drawing to go with them. They are sad and funny and wonderful.

This is a fairly twee and in many ways adorable book produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's hitRECord open-collaborative creative arts company. The book's cover boasts that it features "67 contributors from the 8,569 contributions on the Tiny Stories collaboration on hitRECord.org." Contributions are both very, very tiny stories (never more than two sentences) and black-and-white hand drawings. The concept itself is to take online submissions, under online user names like wirrow (the main architect)...more This is a fairly twee and in many ways adorable book produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's hitRECord open-collaborative creative arts company. The book's cover boasts that it features "67 contributors from the 8,569 contributions on the Tiny Stories collaboration on hitRECord.org." Contributions are both very, very tiny stories (never more than two sentences) and black-and-white hand drawings. The concept itself is to take online submissions, under online user names like wirrow (the main architect) and Metaphorest and RegularJoe (the handle for Gordon-Levitt himself) and publish them. The book sells for about $15 and promises that all profits will be split 50/50 between hitRECord and the collaborators themselves.

The concept is more intriguing than the book, really, which is not to say it doesn't have its pleasures. The drawings and caption-like stories give the book a childish feel, even if a few of the lines -- "Thunder always let lightning come first!" -- sneak in like the dirty jokes someone overheard from his father (in 1950). The overall theme of Tiny Book is one of being -- and trying to be -- delightful, and the book wouldn't feel out of place on a shelf of slightly older children's stories. ("The mumble bee had a fuzzy buzz. Whenever he tried to say 'honey,' it came out all funny.")

This slim volume has the feeling of a summer camp collaboration -- full of partially hidden wit (and probably some in-jokes), nostalgia, and earnest observations made brilliant by the love of fellow collaborators. Basically, it's a little hard for outsiders to fully appreciate, but I'd guess that the 67 contributors (and their thousands of other friends) probably get two or three levels of enjoyment out of seeing their work in print. A new edition -- an annual edition -- is supposed to be printed again next year.

It's not likely a book that would have seen the market without the support of a well-known artist, a fact I'd feel a bit more callous about mentioning if RegularJoe didn't manage to show up as at least a co-contributor in 12 of the 70 some contributions throughout the book. As vanity projects go, though, this is a particularly cute one, and the concept of encouraging further collaboration and creativity online is admirable. Two tiny thumbs up.

I'll admit up front that part of the reason I wanted to review this is because it was associated with Joseph Gordon-Levitt who I love as an actor. But, also, the book sounded so unique. This book is essentially a compilation of the contributions to Gordon-Levitt's production company hitRECord where artists of all types tell tiny, but impactful, stories utilizing a combination of words and art.

If you enjoy storytelling and collaborative artforms, THE TINY BOOK OF TINY STORIES volume 1 is a treasure waiting to be discovered.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (yes, the actor) is the director of hitRECord, an "open-collaborative production company," which encourages anyone to contribute "records" (creative content) that others can use in collaborative projects, some of which get produced and sold. When I got the query letter that compared this to PostSecret and the Six Word Memoirs books, I knew this was a book I had to read, and I am so glad I did get that pitch. This book is magic.

The stories are so tiny that they take up a page or two at the most. While these stories are more like poems, puns, riddles, and sophisticated cartoons (think New Yorker), I found the selections brilliant. The stories are so tiny that they take up a page or two at the most. While these stories are more like poems, puns, riddles, and sophisticated cartoons (think New Yorker), I found the selections brilliant. A mix of whimsy, humor, wryness, and quirky (in the best possible way), The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is the sort of book that starts conversations. For instance, I'd love to compare notes with others, see which were their favorite stories. I started out listing the ones that I wanted to share with friends: the one about the doctor's wife, the magician's rabbit, the story of the egg and the orange, the periodic table, the stuffed guests. . . But then I realized that I liked so many of them that a full list would likely bore you. Check it out yourself!

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories Volume 1 sort of reminded me of those Nutshell Library books in I'd read when I was much younger. I'd carried my beautifully illustrated and tiny Nutshell Library books everywhere until they were so worn out. I brought them with me when we moved overseas and to every house we moved to. In the same way, I know that The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is a keeper - it's a book that I'm taking with me no matter where I move to. Sort of like my collection of Shel Silverstein books.

But I don't just like the book. HitRecord, its collaborative approach and the way that the organization shares the profits of its projects is also unusual and worth supporting.

HitRecord is an "open collaborative production company" with projects that include videos, live shows, music, and books. The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is its first book project with each item chosen by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who in the spirit of open collaboration and sharing, goes by the handle of "RegularJoe".

I picked up this book because I recently joined the hitRECord community. The cover illustration is very cute and it makes the book kind of hard to resist (yes, I sometimes judge a book by the cover). Before today the only pictures that I saw of the book cover were online. At $10 per book I thought it was a great steal. When I finally saw it my initial thought was, 'it's so SMALL.' One word comes to mind when describing this twee little book: "Kawaii!"

If you're not familiar with JGL's collaborative website, hitrecord.org, do yourself a favour and visit it. This little hardcover is a fantastic sampling of what you can see throughout the site: contributions of video, song, stories, art, etc.

From the wondrous packaging of the words to the illustrations lighting up each page with even more imagination, this is not merely a book but a work of art. Each page has some profound or amusing tale relayed in as few words as possible but always getting to the heart of the matter. My favorite? Hard pressed to narrow it down to merely one as so many will speak to you as you page your way through this one, however being the book fan that I am page 68 and 69 expressed the joy of a trip to the bookstore rather well. If I may quote….“His hands were weak and shaking from carrying far too many books from the bookshop. It was the best feeling.”

See? Add to that the included illustration of a young lad peering over same said stack and it’s irresistible. There’s hardly a page turned where a smile, thoughtful pause, or tear can’t be found. The mini-versions of the interior images included within the front and back covers add to the overall whimsy of the book and give readers something else to explore as they prepare to take a tiny trip to the land of the written word.

Recommended read for all ages. Little ones will enjoy the illustrations, older children the humor, adults the combination of both as well as the tiny details included within each. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not the first celebrity to have published a (non-autobiographical) book. John Lennon did it twice, James Franco has done it, Stephen Gately has done it and, next year, Chris Colfer will do it. But if publishing a work of fiction is some sort of competition, it is Gordon-Levitt who has the biggest chance of winning the race... simply because his efforts produce the most heartwarming effect at all.

These are the works of contributors in HitRECord, a forum that Gordon-Levitt founded, and he had help in collecting and selecting the works that are featured in the book. So, you can't really say that he wrote anything and therefore you simply can't compare him to Franco, for example, who published a book with actual stories in it.

But I like the fact that he doesn't try too hard to come up with his own stories. It's not the kind of book that's meant to wow readers with how beautiful the prose is or how masterful the writing is. It won't win any Pulitzers or Bookers.

It's a book that's simply meant to make you smile in moments of great frustration. The kind that you can open and glance at and then make you sit there, thinking and daydreaming for hours. This is something that is meant to be kept in your bag all the time to be pulled out at random times or give to your best friend or lover for when they need cheering up.

Is it possible to tell a story with just one sentence and/or one drawing? Yes, it is. The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories proves that it can be done. It's like when you Tweet and attach a picture: all you need to tell someone a story of what happened to you today is 140 characters and a picture. That's a story. And, sometimes, the smallest - or tiniest - stories make the biggest impact.

This book isn't going to hit Earth like a meteor. It probably won't even make an upward spike in any bookstore's sales chart. But it will make you grin like a look in public as you thumb through the pages, biting your lower lip in an effort not to smile too big, and close it again with a sense of quiet joy in your heart or mind.(less)

Lately I've been getting into graphic novels that tell a story more with pictures. I did some research and posted the book on my wishlist - requesting it from my secret Santa LOL

This little book has text to accompany the images. Kind of like this bedtime story novel I have, but geared towards an older audience.

My advice: Look at the image, analyze it first, then read the text. It's better that way.

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories Volume 1 by Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a collection of short stories and illustrations. hitRECord is an open, collaborative website joining musicians, authors, illustrators, and other artistic people in the creative process. The book itself is short with a mere 83 pages, very little text, but engaging images.

This tiny little book is so original and refreshing. I gobbled it down in one sitting, and I simply adored all of the thought provoking tiny stories and beautiful, quirky illustrations.

The most interesting part about the tiny stories is that you can really make up the rest of the story yourself. They all definitely have a beginning, middle, and end, but the rest of the story is up for interpretation. It really makes every one's experience of reading the stories different.

Each story is short and sweet - accompanied by a detailed illustration - just as the title implies; however, though rarely more than a few sentences long if that, something about them resonates in a way I cannot explain. Liked? I thought the title was just a cutesy little name for the book, but no. It really is a tiny book! It will take you maybe 10-20 minutes to read through the book, and maybe a second read to look at the pictures again. This anthology doesn't really deserve to be reviewed as a book because it is a collection of tiny stories, some humorous, some not, contributed by various people through the internet. Lately, I am gravitating towards brevity in my writing and in what I read. I heard about The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 1 compiled by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (RegularJOE) through HitRECord and thought it sounded perfect. It is! This collection of, well, tiny stories was organized by members of HitRecord.org, a creative and collaborative online community pioneered by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. “The guy from ‘3rd Rock from the Sun?’” you ask. Okay I just read this book in 20 minutes, and I read it fully. it's micro stories and it deserves 5 stars.
