This book is a good example of why I wait to read series (more about that soon, in my review of Eldest). Action-packed, an original voice, sharp characters (although not so much as a mention of Henry's mother's lesbian affairs), but not resolved. For that, of course, you have to read the next book. *sigh*
All of the characters (and many more neat ones) are back from the first book in this sequel that’s even more exciting than the first! Ever since Mr. Fogarty was appointed Gatekeeper by Pyrgus, the Purple Emperor Elect, Henry has been taking care of his home for him.
Until one day, when Mr. Fogarty shows up and asks Henry to come back to the faerie realm. It turns out that Pyrgus’ kingdom is not as peaceful as it should be. Someone has resurrected Pyrgus’ father, the previous Purple Emperor who wa...more

My edition had a SUPER cheesy cover, like something you would see on an early 90s/late 80s pulp fantasy novel. I am a hopeless fantasy junkie, though, and it's hard to find books about the fae in a market that is being burdened by a seemingly limitless demand for vampires and werewolves (thanks, Twilight). So I decided to bite the bullet and I'm oh-so-glad I did.

An interesting sequel and I like his view on faerie realms and his writing style. It's a nice little filler for the trilogy. Just one more book to go. If you want to buy this book, you're welcome to. I'll be putting it up on ebay soon, but contact me and you can have it. (I accidentally bought two.) Just a few of the pages are dog eared, but other than that it's in perfect condition!
In this sequel to Faerie Wars, we pick up right where we left off. Mr Fogarty has settled into his duties as Gatekeeper of the Realm, Pyrgus is acclimating to his position as Emperor Elect, and Henry is back at home missing the Faerie Realm. So when he finds out he’s been invited to Pyrgus’ Coronation Ceremony, he’s perfectly happy to except. On top of that, he finds out he’ll be receiving some magical help in sneaking away–even better!

Excellent follow-up! I'm about to start Ruler of the Realm so I'll have to make this quick! The pacing in the second installment of Faerie Wars series is much, MUCH faster (and I liked it--it works well) there are 100+ chapters but each one is only a page and a half long, so yes you do switch viewpoints extremely often but it's not for long! One thing I would have liked was a better idea of time in the setting. I found myself frowning at the sequence of events (ever so slightly) because at times...more
I got this book in high school and didn't expect to want to read it again but...it has magic and demons and adventure, not to mention cute kids falling for each other. Also strong female characters.
I think I've read the first book but I can't remember. This one stands alone, though. It follows the hapless protagonist (his name's Henry, what's not to love?) through the "analogue" world and the magic world while he gets into mischief, crushes on the princess, is unsure of himself, and helps save t...more

This book was about wizards, magic, evil, good and all that other magical stuff. In a place called The Faerie Realm there is a Purple Palace, in the Purple Palace there is a a Purple Emperor who rules the whole Realm. When the Emperor dies a sudden death, his son pyrgus has to become the new Purple Emperor. Even with Pyrgus's sister, Blue, help he is still really nervous. with only a little time before he becomes emperor, Pyrgus is suprised when he hears news that his father has been resurrected...more
I spotted FAERIE WARS at a yard sale and paid either .50 cents or a dollar for it. I thought the cover was really cool and the synopsis on the back sounded interesting.
Once I got home and started to read it I noticed the next book was advertised in the back pages and that's when I remembered seeing the second book in this series at that same yard sale.
So the next day, my husband and I drove over to that house - I just happened to catch the owner there and when I told her I'd bought the first boo...more

book 2 of book one this one has more action. Henry now goes back to the faerie realm. Pyrgus father dies all of a sudden so now he has to become the new emperor. His father was the former Purple emperor of the purple palace and he needs to be the new purple emperor. His sister Blue which is a weird name and since she is called blue he should be called red because red+blue= purple. well his sister is helping her nervous brother out to be the new emperor. But the evil man called lord Hairstreak re...more

This book was all right, but I think I'm done with the series. I've never been a fan of silly sci-fi/fantasy and Brennan pushed the limits of my patience here. I like my books a lot darker. Pyrgus, Blue, and Henry continue to get into trouble in this second installment of Faerie Wars. Bad things happen, but it all turns out okay at the end (spoiler, but really, it's to be expected). Nothing in this book really engaged me the way I was hoping it would. I feel like I would be more interested in fi...more
I had a hard time liking this sequel as much as I had liked the first one. That was maybe due to the fact that I read it in Portuguese and maybe the translation, as sometimes happens, was too... child-like? I don't know, it was strange to like the first because I normally don't like this type of books, but I really enjoyed that one and then I got really desappointed while reading the second. I may read the next one in the original version... or not read more of it at all.

These books tend to jump around a lot. There are over 100 chapters and frequently the chapters are 1 1/2 pages or less in length. Not every chapter jumps POV, but it does happen quite often. The villains also frequently work not only against each other with their various plots, but sometimes even against themselves. Ultimately the story is entertaining enough that I want to find out what happens next, but it's a mediocre story that doesn't shout "read me now!"
This is the 2nd book of the series Faerie Wars. I actually liked this one better than the first. This book takes place mostly in the Faerie World. There we meet up with characters from the first book like Pyrgus, Henry, Mr. Fogarty, Blue, Hairstreak, Brimstone, etc. It picks up a couple weeks after the last one left off. Pyrgus is getting ready to become Emperor but he doesn't really want to. All of the sudden he finds out that he doesn't have to because his deceased father is back. From there i...more

Herbie Brennan just cracks me up. I love great YA novels that go for smart, playful humor instead of going for the cheap gags. I think Herbie and Diana Wynne Jones are probably some of the best YA writers when it comes to humor. And the best part is that humor is only one tool is Herbie's very diverse literary toolbox.

This was definitely an improvement on the first book. The story is overall good - I like the characters, I like the story, I like the world he's created. It's clever. My only frustration is that I'm not so fond of Brennan's writing style. The way he jumps characters is annoying, and he always ends chapters on a cliffhanger, and then the question left hanging is not always answered when you return to that character.
I liked this sequel better than the first one. It talks a lot about responsibility and what is the right thing to do when you know you aren't right for the job. It's still full of the British humour that set the first one apart from a lot of fantasy I read, and is full of action. Which is great. Brennan adeptly keeps a whole bunch of storylines going at once, too, which is no small feat.
What do Faerie wars and Animorphs have in common?
1. Finnish translating of both series has stopped. The latest books available in Finnish are this and with Animorphs 20.
2. The English versions of either aren't available in local library
(4 star rating isn't releated to content above, I just think that the first book was a little better, but this wasn't bad either).

The tendency for the narration to say that things "couldn't possibly get any worse" and then promptly show how things got worse became a little irritating. But it was pretty impressive how much the characters' situations were capable of worsening before the conclusion. And, because of the constantly worsening situations in which the characters were being placed, the plot became less predictable; it even seemed likely, at times, that one of the protagonists would be killed off.
Simple bur pleasant read begins to take on some depth in this second installment of this series. Prince pyrgus, holly blue, and henry face an all new plot from lord hairstreak over who will rule the realm. While not as engrossing or complicated as what i usually read this witty little story is perfect for welcoming the young reader to the wonderful world of fantasy. A happy little read.
Liked this book a lot. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the author tells us that they have a major idea to save everyone and then instead of revealing it when they think of it. We have to sit through several chapters of them hoping their plan will work so they all know it and it is like they are cheating us by not telling us. Made it a little anti-climactic.
I read this book some years ago and then recently listened to it on CD. I decided that I really didn't like it much. It is brilliant in creativity, science fiction, characters, writing, etc. But I realized that it is not a book I would recommend to young readers. It is just too macabre, too sickeningly tragic. The cruelty of the bad guys is so twisted. I know that showing evil for what it is, is laudable and necessary, but there are some things I don't feel is worth putting into my imagination a...more

This is the second installment of the Faerie Wars series. Henry is drawn back into the problem in the Faerie realm. He goes on to have more adventures while helping Pyrgus and Blue and defeating the attempts of Lord Hairstreak to assassinate one of the royal family. This is fun read full of faerie magic and adventure. I am looking forward to the next one.
