Early summer 2012, I read my first C J Box book and spent the season inhaling rest. The central character, Joe Pickett, was a particularly satisfying one. He can always be counted on to do what (he believes) is the "right" thing. Now, as you read the stories, you'll find that "right" thing may not always be what is prescribed by his agency superiors - or even the State's Governor. But Joe uses his moral compass for his direction.

#12 in the Joe Pickett series. Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett takes a back seat to his fugitive friend Nate Romanowski in this outing. A follow-up to the attacks on Nate in Cold Wind (2011) that took the life of his lover and that of his trusted friend. We finally get the dark secret that drives Nate as he reluctantly reveals his exploits with a covert operations team that took place while he was an Air Force officer. His rogue ex-team leader is spearheading the attack and the body count become...more
One character in this new thriller pulls off the ears of those who cross him. Or he shoots their knees off. Or snaps their fingers back. He doesn’t mind roughing up women too.
And he’s the good guy. Meet Nate Romanowski, a man who is so hard he wasn’t just in the army, or even the special forces, but in a secret elite unit of special forces called The Five. As this rugged thriller gets under way, Nate’s former commanding officer, a badass called Lt John Nemecek, is hunting Nate with a crew of for...more
C.J. Box puts the reader in the middle of the modern-day wilderness of Wyoming and makes the setting a part of the plot of the book. Once again, in Force of Nature, Box's protagonist, Joe Pickett, finds himself in peril, this time by shadowy government forces who threaten him as well as his family.
Even though Pickett is the central character of this series, Force of Nature focuses on Joe's friend Nate Romanowski. Romanowski is the prey in a vicious hunt for anyone who knows a secret from the pa...more

I was kind of afraid to read this. I love the Joe Pickett books so much, and I've always found Nate Romanowski's character fascinating, but did I want to read a whole book about him? Yes, yes I did. It's excellent.

Force of Nature by C.J. Box is one of the Joe Pickett series. The primary character is Nate Romanowski who is a Special Forces Operative. This is the story of him using the skills he must employ to survive in the area of the Bighorn Mountains Wyoming, and other states in the Western regions. Nate is a private individual, almost a survivalist, certainly a minimalist. I found it interesting that Nate is a master falconer as I have always been interested in the skills and trainings that one would n...more
While nominally a Joe Pickett novel, the newest entry in this series is all about outlaw Nate Romanowski, finally bringing readers up to snuff on what makes him tick. Right off the bat, Nate is attacked by three locals, one firing an arrow into his shoulder, but he shoots and kills them all. He learns that he is being sought by his old Special Forces commander, and one by one all his potential allies are being murdered. Certainly his past is catching up to Nate.

All Nate Romanowski ever wanted was to be left alone with his secrets and his guilt. He dropped out of society, went off the grid, and vanished into the wilderness. He knew at some point there could be a reckoning. In the last month his good friend, Large Merle, died just after giving him the warning – “The Five. They’ve deployed.”
Now the battle has begun and has come in an unexpected form. Lucky to survive, Nate can’t make any more mistakes. Not only does he have to convince those he loves, suc...more

I spend several hours last night reading this book because I couldn't (or, more specifically, didn't want) to put it down. Joe Pickett, being a Game Warden and a lawman has had an uneasy friendship with falconer and fugitive Nate Romanowski. Their friendship is tested when an elite military unit known as The Five come after Nate, leaving a trail of blood in their wake. The head of this unit is Nate's former CO, John Nemecek, himself a master falconer.

CJ Box did it again! We finally learn the back story of Nate Romanowski. And it is big! I was a bit disappointed because it took most of the book to learn the secret and for some reason I expected to find out much sooner in the novel. I had not read reviews of the book so I was clueless as to where the story was going and was quite proud of myself when I figured out what Nate's secret was related to, only to find out that the premise of the story was revealed in editorial reviews. At any rate, I...more
Last year about this time, I picked up the latest C.J. Box novel and reminded myself how much I enjoyed Box's Joe Pickett series. Cold Wind left me wanting to know more about the mysterious Nate Romanowski....

This is the long-awaited revelation about why Nate Romanowski is hiding out in the mountains, off the grid. Which shady government agency did he belong to? Who is hunting him now?
SPOILERS FOLLOW:
I really like Nate, but I'm not sure he carried this book. Maybe it's because Joe Pickett is so well developed during this series. Even Marybeth comes across as a very real, shaded person, and women characters aren't always the strong point of this series. There's a very well-done, chilling scene with he...more

C.J. Box has been entertaining his fans with twelve previous novels about the activities of Wyoming game warden, Joe Pickett.
In the region of the Bighorn Mountains, Nate Romanowski learns that members of his old special forces unit may be coming after him.
Three local men make an unsuccessful attempt on Nate's life and when their bodies are found, it creates an uproar.
Nate had been in a specialized unit and done some things he'd rather not think about. Unfortunately, the leader of this group want...more

This is another great book by C.J. Box. I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous Joe Pickett novels and this one does not disappoint. (This book can be read without reading the previous books but I would recommend reading at least one other previous Joe Pickett book because it would help the reader understand the gravity of the situation between Joe and Nate.)

The story centers on the mysterious Nate Romanoski, who has appeared in previous Joe Pickett novels.
Nate technically doesn't exist. He is a fugitive.
For much of the novel Box teases us with a lack of information on this guy. Why did he drop out? Who is after him? Why?
As people around him are killed and Pickett's family is threatened, we finally learn of Nate's crime and his pursuer, a scary guy who taught Nate much of what he knows about combat and survival--in falconry terms.

In this tale we get an exciting thriller in which an ex-Special Forces man living off the grid in Wyoming, Nate Romanowski, must elude and overcome a group of former associates intent on killing him. His knowledge about crimes of his former mentor in falconry and special operations has made him a target. Nates only source of help are his friends, who have also become targets, including game warden Joe Pickett, members of the Wind River Reservation, and an enclave of Special Forces drop-outs i...more
Next to Nevada Barr, C.J Box is my most favorite whodunit author. Joe Pickett is the quintessential game warden- he can handle himself in the great outdoors, and he believes wholeheartedly that what he is doing is the right thing, and that it makes a difference. Through the books, he's had to make some tough ethical decisions, and he's paid for some of them as well as incurred the enmity of the local sheriff. His friendship with Nate Romanowski is an ethically difficult one, and Joe does an incr...more
In this long-awaited book, the mysterious background of Joe Pickett's friend, Nate Romanowski is revealed. The book begins with multiple people being killed and ends in the same manner. Numerous others die over the course of the book. People are not who they seem to be in this book, with the exception of Sheriff McLanahan, who is as big of an idiot as ever. This reader does not want to say too much about the plot of the book because to do so will be to ruin the suspense for future readers. The...more
I liked it. It was a good entertaining page turner. We finally get the back story on Nate. It was a little over the top on calling The Five peregrines. Too much cheesey falconry lingo. And it was way over the top when we find out about the interactions they had with two bearded muslim individuals. A bit predictable about where the inside information was coming from. Also, Joe is told to get his family out of town because "he" will use/harm them to get what he wants. So Joe follows orders but doe...more
I have greatly enjoyed C.J. Box's books and have followed his work since his first book. Force of Nature, however, should go on your "Don't waste your time!" list! Nate's new love interest came off as whiny, self-centered and boring. Joe Pickett's exchanges with the bombastic sheriff made Joe sound like a very insecure 12-year-old, and the whole premise behind the novel seemed stretched beyond believability even within the context of the novel. And the April charachter----aaaaarrgggghhhhh! When...more
CJ Box Doesn't disappoint with this action packed thriller! Finally, we get a glimple into Nate's tortured soul and see what has happened in his past that has him on the run. As always the imagery is crystal clear. Box is a wordsmith in the first order. He transports me back home again and I can see the clear blue skies, feel the biting air, smell the brush sage, and hear the high lonesome wind call my name.

Page turning action. He never wanted to tell Joe Pickett about it, but Nate Romanowski always knew trouble was coming out of his past. Now it's here, and it may not only be the battle of his life-but of Joe's. In 1995, Nate was in a secret Special Forces unit abroad when a colleague did something terrible. This is the twelfth book in the Joe Pickett series and CJ Box once again provides a riveting story with a pace that will have you believing in Wyoming a New York minute is considered slow. Don't expect to put this one down until you turn the last page.

A few years back when I learned about books featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett, I was interested because we share the same last name (for me, a maiden name). Finding out that the series is in my favorite mystery genre clinched the deal. Since then, I've read every one, following Joe and his wife Mary Beth from the time their daughters were small to now, when the oldest is in college.
They've all been good, but I think this may be the best of the lot so far. Maybe it's because there's a bit...more

I've read all of Box's previous books and really liked them and his writing style. His characters are always very realistic and likable (except for Nate and the sheriff). I like the juxtaposition of Nate's amoral attitude and Joe's loyalty, honesty and strong ethics, and the fact that despite these differences in how they view the world, they can be friends. But I was mildly disappointed in this book. It was more violent and more predictable than the others. I also felt that Nate's deep, dark se...more
As with all of the Joe Pickett novels I've read by C. J. Box this was a page turner from the get go. Lots of action, suspense, drama. It's winter in Wyoming and someone is killing off friends of Nate Romanowski. They would like to kill Nate as well. Being the loner and master falconer he is, Nate can handle most of what they throw at him alone. But it doesn't hurt to have friends like Joe and his wife or a new compatriot to help out. Thing is, you never know who you can trust. This holds true fo...more
With the twelfth book in the Joe Pickett series, C. J. Box once again wows his readers with a fast-paced thriller that proves to be the best in the series.

This last offering of the Joe Pickett series by C J Box is one of the best stories in the series. It was full of action, twists and turns by various characters. Some things were predictable in that each of the past stories has had a similar circumstance - Joe Picket's truck, his family, the local sheriff. This story was mainly that of Nat Romanowski; not a totally likable fellow but very interesting and action oriented. I'm now up to date with the series, have seen Joe and his family evolve and...more
Pretty good...first C.J. Box novel I've read, and I enjoyed it. Nate Romanowski is the kind of human, but uber-skilled, character that I enjoy escaping with, and Box didn't disappoint in that regard. Others have reviewed the content of the book, so I won't do that in my review, except to say that the conflict in the book is well set up, the action seems well-researched, and the resolution is satisfying. It was good treadmill reading.

I have really enjoyed all of the Joe Pike books so far. They just keep getting better and better. We finally get to see the secrets that made Nate Romanowski into the lethal mystery man he is; a man trained in Black Ops. When I finally heard the story, I could understand Nate's special code, and also why he is so devoted to Joe and his family. It was a page turner until the end.
