In my childhood, I was a Walt Disney nut. I loved the cartoons, I loved the movies, and I loved reading about the man himself, ever since I checked out one of those American Pioneers mini-novels from my elementary school's library. The problem with most Walt Disney bios is that there's a hard and fast line that's drawn between them. Either they paint an absolutely rosy picture of the man (fully and completely sanctioned by The Disney Corporation) or they go in the absolute opposite direction, hi...more

Walt Disney was an incredible man - and after reading this book, I feel like I have a real idea of who he was, the good and the bad. The book goes beyond "The Happiest Place On Earth" to see the wonderful and not so wonderful parts of Disney's life and character.

Next time I watch one of his movies, I'll be thinking about what he was trying to accomplish and how he felt about the film in its conception and release.

Neal Gabler's new Walt Disney book is as epic as the man himself. Gabler's fact-finding and attention to detail ultimately give shape to a complex lonely man who constantly strived for perfection in his every endeavor. And what endeavors! Disney is responsible for innovations such as sound and color in cartoons, but is most remembered for bringing personality and a story structure to them as well. At the height of the Golden Age, he griped that he was tired of all the "gag stuff" which...more

A great but flawed look at a great but flawed man. Probably the first book about Disney to be free of revisionism either positive or negative. Instead a clear eyed honest look at a man who changed the course of the 20th century.

That said, while I love books about Filmmaking, the first couple decades of the 20th century, and animation, this book was a little much even for me. The length can be generously described as "horse choking" or "punishing" and once the win...more

Neal Gabler's "Walt Disney" presents a detailed, informative and well-written biography of one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Disney transformed the entertainment industry by consistently pushing the boundaries, from adding sound and color to cartoons to creating immersive theme park environments. Gabler had the support of the Disney family but does not shy away from criticizing Walt. The bulk of the book concentrates on Walt's early years and the development of t...more

One might complain that there is an overabundance of information, but for the not-so-casual reader, nothing more could be wished. The book outlines Disney's cultural influence of social issues as diverse as patriotism, politics, economics and technology, in a manner at once entertaining and authoritative

Walt Disney is one of the greatest men that ever lived in my humble little opinion ^^ Without him, there would be very little joy in my life. I truly relished the journey into the world of Walt Disney and the trials that sparked one of the greatest creative minds of all time.

As an aspiring Imagineer, I thought it would be wise to read this mammoth biography, which has been deemed the definitive biography of walt disney. The book did not disappoint, as the information that Gabler presented was detailed beyond my expectations. My biggest disappoint was that the book did not delve into the potential of Walt's final dream of EPCOT, and rather rushed through the last 5-10 years of his life with little recognition of his later dreams and ideas and how they could have done...more

As a self proclaimed Walt Disney afficianado, I very eagerly awaited the arrival of this book on its publication date. As I read through it, I found myself, admittedly, a smidge disappointed. I love Walt Disney. Yet somehow, this 800+ pg book loses what charm could have been made with all the details and facts of Walt's life. It read, a bit, like a text book. Then why did I give it 4 stars? There were many many wonderful passages in this book, and it has so much information, that I still fel...more

I've heard the audio version, which was fantastic, but I'm hoping to delve deeper with the actual text pretty soon, partly as research for a novel I'm writing.

Sorry, but considering the topic, not a sprightly read. I suppose everyone has their own angle on what makes Disney fascinating. For example, I guess Gabler does not share my belief that It's a Small World is up there with some of the masterpieces of 20th century art.

I liked it. It made me cry. It was long and at times hard to read, but it gave a greater understanding of walt disney, and his personal struggles, and his demons. and i think it offered life lessons about taking the time to understand what makes you happy, and reaching out to those around you for help in that happiness. if you don't do this, you run the risk of never finding what makes you happy for a sustained period of time, and you keep reaching and struggling and striving for something. ...more

On the surface, this was a good biography. It told the story of Disney's life, both the good and the bad. It was exactly what I wanted to read - a comprehensive life story of the man who created Mickey Mouse.

However, I do not agree with the author's analysis of Disney as a man who was constantly trying to control his surroundings, be it through cartoons, movies, theme parks, or urban planning. This idea seemed forced into every chapter, and the book would have read well without it. ...more

recommends it for: anyone who is remotely interested in Disney films, theme parks or the corporation
I imagine this is the most thorough biography on Disney to date. Gabler takes the reader meticulously through each step of Disney's wild career. The most amazing revelation upon reading this book is really how the Disney corporation was really nothing but strings and strings of flops that were constantly putting the company in danger. Miraculously at the last minute, Disney would helm projects of such creative genius, the whole company and his legacy were saved. Very cool.

I listened to the audio version.
The good: the book was informative and well-researched. I learned a great deal about Mr. Disney, techniques of early animation and the birth of Disneyland.
The bad: At 33 hours, this was more than I cared to know. I would have been happier with an abridged version. It didn't make me want to watch any of Disney's films. And every footnote, including the source, page and paragraph number was read which I found annoying.

A fascinating book that tells the life story of Walt Disney and the development of his company. It's interesting to read how the company started and how it grew. His greatest achievemnet will always be Snow White and he spent his entire career trying to re-captue that. It also covers the conception adn design of Disney World. If you ever wondered about the behind the scenes story of Disney this is an excellent book.

Esther bought this for me as a gift since I *didn't* get a paid trip to Disney World in March 2007. I love history and am interested in learning about people and their lives but have never been big on biographies. So it is taking a little while to get through it, but it is very well written and insightful. Gabler is able to present Disney as a man, complete with fallacies and flaws but not evil or vice versa.
