The Ugly Duchess is yet another wonderful story in Eloisa James’ Fairy Tales series. In all that it is charming, romantic, witty and sweetly sexy, it’s also heartwarming, poignant and a truly beautiful love story.

Theodora Saxby is not beautiful. But she does possess a fortune. James Ryburn, Earl of Islay, heir to the Duchy of Ashbrook is handsome. And in need of a fortune. When James is told by his father that he has gambled away the family's wealth, embezzled from Theo's fortune and that James must marry Theo for her money, James is adamantly against the idea. Afterall, he and Theo have grown up together. He loves her certainly, but in a brotherly fashion.

James Ryburn, Earl of Islay, is informed by his father (a duke) that he has to marry Theodora Saxby, his best friend since they were children. Long ago, Theo's dying father asked the duke to look after Theo and her mother, and she and James have been like siblings ever since.
Seems the duke has the IQ of a radish, and he blew through the entire wealth of the duchy, then embezzled as much of Theo's inheritance as he could lay his hands on. If James isn't the man who marries her, not only will the...more

The misconception I had when I'd just been one chapter into this book: 5 stars. I know I'm going to give this 5 stars!

When I started this book- when I was still on the 'Before' part- out of nowhere I had this thought that startled me into stopping, and then smiling for no reason, before I resumed back to reading.

I love Eloisa James, so my opinion may be biased. She's never over the top, and she unapologetically adds content that may or may not be realistic for her preferred Regency time period. But she sure does make me laugh with it! She's never too sexual, but she does write very sensual scenes. For me, she just really writes great ROMANCE stories. Her characters are flawed, they make stupid, stupid, STUPID decisions (James, I'm looking at you), but they are jus...more

I am not a super big fan of this trope, so take my review with a grain of salt. Basically, we are told that Theo and James are best childhood friends, but have just a few scant scenes demonstrating that -- when really, they just tell each other that they are best friends. Married two days then separated after a truly gut wrenching exchange...and seven years later he is an alphole pirate and she is called a frigid 'virago' after enduring shame, ridicule, debt, death, etc. etc.

I was going to read this, but I'm having a hard time, considering the reviews. Infidelity and estrangement aren't my thing. I'm having a hard enough time finishing Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas, and I knew the premise before going in...
I am surprised Eloisa James has written such a storyline... It's just not for me at the moment.

Theodora Saxby and James Ryburn, Earl of Islay and next in line for a Dukedom are the match of the season, no one expected the ugly and mannish Theo to bring the handsome James up to scratch, with such a romantic proposal, not even Theo. But she falls in love and they marry...only to be separated two days later when she throws him out after discovering that James, her oldest friend and the man she loves only married her for her dowry.

The Ugly Duchess is one of Eloisa James Fairy Tale that you MUST NOT miss!
I love it from the beginning till the end
There's a lot of heart aches....I hated the part where James left though
for nearly SEVEN freaking YEARS
Theo is a strong heroine I admire a lot!
Being branded ugly and yet against all odds she became a successful Countess whom everyone now adores and respect
She's strong, loyal, witty , smart, honorable and courageous

I started crying right at the beginning because when the hero and heroine start off happy, you know something will break them apart. But I was shocked (in a good way) at where the authors took the characters and I loved every minute of this book. James was sensitive and loving at the start and not the traditional hero for a historical romance. I fell in love with him then and there and when he transformed into an alpha male, it was even better. Theo is always beautiful, but it’s when she truly b...more
James, the Earl of Islay, has been raised in the same household as his father's ward, a young woman two years his junior named Theodora "Theo" Saxby, who he and only he refers to as Daisy. They've been best friends since childhood and his feelings for her are warm, loving, protective ... and platonic.
But then his father, the irascible, unreasonable Duke of Ashford, demands that James marry Daisy in order to use her fortune to rescue the duchy, which fell into ruin due to the Duke's gambling and...more

I read an ebook ARC of this title, and was very happy that I had an extra day off this week so that I could stay up late to finish it guilt free!

Sad to say, that I hadn't read a historical in quite awhile. I have been floating along in the contemporary world and YA world, that I hadn't remembered how much I LOVE a beautifully written historical romance. So thank you Eloisa James for showing me what I was missing out on.
The Ugly Duchess shares the story of Theodora Saxby, a girl unlike the rest of her peers in looks and in attitude, but none of that has ever mattered to her best friend, James Ryburn, the Duchy of Ashbrook. They have grown...more

Theodora Saxby has been the ward of the Duke of Ashbrook, James' father, since her own father passed away. Growing up together, Theo and James have always had a brother-sister relationship. They were playmates, confidantes, and best friends since childhood. And probably would have remained so, if not for the Duke's spendthrift ways.
The Duke, having squandered away nearly everything not entailed, is in big trouble—out of desperation, he has stolen from Theo's dowry. To avo...more

Ugly Duckling tales have long been popular among romance readers with a fondness for fairy tale motifs, but Eloisa James offers readers a fresh take on the fairy tale with The Ugly Duchess, Book 4 in her Happily Ever After series. An ugly duckling transforms herself into a swan with still tender scars underneath her glorious feathers and, in a reverse move, a handsome, popular swan transforms himself into a scarred ruffian shorn of his feathers.

As soon as The Ugly Duchess is released I am going to be reading it. I love all of Eloisa James books. So I am positive this will be just as good. ****I finished reading The Ugly Duchess and It was even better than I thought it was going to be. The hero James was an unusual and exciting character. The story was unpredictable and exciting.
After reading my first Eloisa James book middling review here I came to this recommended one with some trepidation. I wanted to love it, because Eloisa James herself is truly inspiring and I couldn't bear to find her books weren't. I needn't have worried. I get it now.
Whilst I have issues with James' treatment of Theo in terms of their separation and the fact he never thought how hard it would be for her (so not 5 stars) I liked both of these characters and their easy, early relationship was wel...more

I enjoy fantasy books but there are a few things that are just a turn off and this book is a classic example.
James and Theo have grown up together and are very close. Sadly Theo's dad is an idiot; he has lost all of his money as well as part of Theo's dowry and now he is in danger of going to prison. So James's dad wants James to marry Theo and pretend to be in love this way they can be saved from financial ruin. Why did I read this book ? Because I was utterly charmed by book 2 in this series, When Beauty Tamed the Beast(Linnet and Pier charm the socks of most people).
This book has every trope that has plagued romantic fiction since the turn of the century:
a) a regency romance involving the nobility(a Duke is always at hand; and he is handsome and charming)
b) the dazzling romance of loving a rakish pirate on the other side of the law(well she thinks so but for the sake of the book not being thicker, i...more

My experience with Eloisa James's books is that they tend toward the overblown and underwritten. There is always huge drama of some kind, and it never allows the story to resolve organically because so much is left unsaid.
So, The Ugly Duchess: I really enjoyed the first 30% of this book. I thought the conflict was believable (i.e., it didn't seem overblown or carried to the point of ridiculous), and I loved Theo and James's first few days together as a married couple. I got them, in that sectio...more

My first full-length Eloisa James, after reading "With This Kiss", a three-part e-novella about the children of the characters in "Duchess". I debated reading it because some of the lowest ratings were pretty negative, while others were rapturous - then I realized I've often seen that with romance readers, they feel VERY strongly about their favorite authors/plot lines and there are certain things they will not tolerate! Fair enough, but so far I've only dabbled in the genre, going in fits and s...more
3.5 stars! The 'ship building in this book was really good - I liked that so much of the 'flashback' half of the story was about laying down that groundwork, because I really wanted to believe they adored each other, and I'm glad I did. I love stories about friends who fall in love! and in this book, despite needing someone to force it into happening, I loved that we got proof of that love. The hero mentions that if they hadn't had their fall-out they would've been perfect together for years, an...more

...can the new Theo love the new James?
This is the emotional core of the story -- two people who knew each other so perfectly have now become perfect strangers to one another after almost seven years of separation.

As I was reading this book, around the 75% mark, I was determined that this book would get a 2 or 3 star. I was ticked off. Daisy (aka Theo) was driving me batty with just how angry, unfeeling, and icy she was.
But then, the author did something that turned everything on its head.
Up until that part of the story, I was convinced these two would never find their HEA. I was sure they were doomed and I was so upset by this because the beginning was so sweet and lovely and just perfection! And then,...more

This is one of the very few instances where the rating is a mash-up: three stars for the first 60% of the book and 1 for the rest of it.
This is not an history book, so let's pretend historical facts are unimportant (and they mostly aren't in romance). Therefore we can ignore the pirate/privateer section. Good.
The story was really nice. A woman was deceived, spurned, ridiculed. But she came out of it an Amazon. I was having fun. Then he comes back and the story went downhill in a new-york minute....more

It appears that Ms. James is well on her way to give us her take on many fairy tales most of us have grown up with. After ‘A Kiss at Midnight’ [her take on Cinderella], ‘When Beauty Tamed the Beast’ [her take on The Beauty and the Beast] and ‘The Duke is Mine’ [her take on The Princess and the Pea] we’re now on ‘The Ugly Duchess’ [her take on The Ugly Duckling] and coming in May 2013, ‘Once Upon A Tower’ which will be her take on Rapunzel.

First let me say that I really enjoy the way Eloisa James spins fairy tales into her novels, and when I saw this story, I was excited to see what she would do. Unfortunately, I found the story to be lacking in both charm and common sense.
For one, I found the romance between the main characters unconvincing from the beginning. Raised as siblings, coerced into marriage, awkward wedding night....yet somehow James (the author, not the hero) wants me to believe they are in love and has the characters...more
