"Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world."
My wish is that everyone on the planet has a book like this in their lives – a book you can read over and over again, a book that makes you feel instantly comforted and that each reading reveals something new. Anne of Green Gables is the story of a young orphaned girl named, you guessed it, Anne. Born in Nova Scotia only to lose both of her parents from the fever at the age of three months, Anne has grown up in many households, never being able to stay in one place for long. As you can imagine, this has left young Anne feeling needy and unwanted.
And when siblings Marilla and Matthew decide to adopt a boy to help work on their farm, they never expect to get a girl instead. Naturally, their first ...more

Ive decided that instead of reviewing this book, I will copy my favorite passages....passages that capture what I love about the book.....
Page 180 describes Anne perfectly, "The downfall of some dear hope or plan plunged Anne into "deeps of affliction." The fulfilment thereof exalted her to dizzy realms of delight."
I love the way Anne thinks...I love the way she jumps from thing to thing in a frenzy of thoughts.....

I don't often give books five stars and as I neared the end of this book, I gave some thought to how many stars this book deserved. I've read the Anne of Green Gables series once before - over twenty years ago. In spite of the amount of time that has elapsed, I clearly recall reading the last book in the series very slowly and thinking to myself, "I will be so sad to not be able to read about Anne anymore." When I picked up this book a few days ago to re-read it, I found within a fe...more

Oh, how I love thee Anne.
Your character made this book brilliant.
I adored you and wanted to be best friends with you when I was a child.
We were so similar... getting in trouble by accident, making mistakes, saying whatever came to our minds, whenever we want.
Both precocious, vain, proud, with a knack for words and an imagination that wraps around the entire universe.
Lover of books, aspiring authors...

I don't get why everyone keeps going on about Gilbert Blythe when he's hardly in this book. To my disappointment it's all Anne's fault and her obstinate efforts to remain a grudge holder for 5 years. Five years she held a grudge for him for calling her "carrots", even thought he immediately apologized and sucked up for two years; and yet, Josie Pye has done worse 10x over and Anne remained cordial with her. I don't get it.

Montgomery, L.M. 1908. Anne of Green Gables.
I first 'discovered' Anne Shirley through watching the 1985 and 1987 films by Kevin Sullivan/Wonderworks when they aired on my local PBS station. As far as I'm concerned, these two are the ONLY films that are 'real.' Meaning that the monstrosity of a film released in 2000 doesn't exist at all. It's something that should be avoided at all costs. It is evil, evil, pure evil.

To be brutally honest, I was disappointed. I found Anne quite often to be annoying and found my self skimming through many of her rambling soliloquies. Many (especially those of the female gender I suppose) may find her apt to talk ad nauseum to be one of her most enduring qualities, I however did not.

I am probably the only adult women in the world who has not read this book so after years of it nagging at me I finally read it. Like everyone else, loved it. It was full of charm. If I would have read this years ago I would not have enjoyed it as much as I just did. I found it soothing at times to read of Marrilla's concern for Anne development and could relate to it so much myself having a bunch of silly little girls in my house. Besides much laughter it gave me much hope for my girls to ...more
What a delightful book! Reading this truly made me happy. Anne's character was a hoot!! I found myself giggling throughout the book. Her quirkiness was endearing. Her view of life was fascinating. She had the spunk that you can't help but love! She brought the kid out of me and it felt wonderful.

Boo!It's boring as hell! I never finish it. This book hasn't got any conflict at all which for me doesnt worth reading. I wonder why this book (just like To Kill A Mockingbird which is also boring) is in "The best book ever". It's totally ridiculous. I have to read 500 pages just to find out about a little girl's boring flat life. It really wasted my time, and money to buy this book in the first place.
I thought this book was boring the first time I tried to read it, but I gave it another try a few years later and I loved it. Whenever anyone asks what my favorite book is, this always comes to mind before I realize that I'm probably supposed to give an "adult" book for an answer. The characters are so likeable and all their adventures are believable. I always wished I could be friends with Anne and Diana.
In a word: Trite. I know that sounds snobby, but come on. Anne is the epitome of a Mary Sue character. Awh, poor thing, she's too skinny, and her red hair is too unique, and she's just so quirky! Isn't she just the perfect little flawed heroine!? Actually, no. She's obnoxious. Even as a child I couldn't buy in to this garbage.
I read this when I was about ten or eleven, and forgot how much I adored it. I've finally got the whole set of the Anne books, so I sat down to reread this one today. It's easy to read, and charming, and more touching than I'd remembered -- I came over all sniffly a couple of times. And I also had a lot of delighted little giggles.

I loved Anne, really loved her. I have read reviews which say that Anne (spelled with an e !)is silly, vain, hot-tempered. Oh yes, she is all that and much more. Anne is a human being brimming with dreams and most of all ready to enjoy life, not in a jaded fashion, but how it should be enjoyed, she loves every tiny fern, every little flower, even puffed sleeves! Her capacity to enjoy life is amazing. That is what Mathew must have seen when he was taking a skinny, redhead girl 'home' A tempest ha...more
I don't mean to be a slacker on my other "currently reading" books, but I got sidetracked by Anne - I never read it as a child, and I am loving it as an adult! How does she pack so much living into her days at Green Gables??? Clearly, by scarcely drawing breath when tipping over her head and letting the contents of her imagination and emotions pour out on everyone around her...

This book, and all others by L.M. Montgomery, make me want to write. She has the most expressive language in books that I have ever eaten. The words are like lace and frosting and whipped cream on the basic storytelling means. And who could not love her characters? Anne is a pure delight, no-one but the stingiest of cranks could hold a grudge against the girl. She is just too hopeful, too delightful, too full of nothing but the greatest of amibitions. And yet she also has her moments where she i...more
This is just one of the very best books of all time. Anne is the quintessential little girl from the beginning of the 20th century, and Avonlea seems like a little Canadian country utopia. It's been my dream since I first read these books and watched the series (religiously) to visit Prince Edward Island, and my re-read has reminded me of that dream!

My aunt bought me the whole set of Anne of Green Gables when I was about 8 years old, starting me on (what I think) was a fairly good diet of reading material for a child. Mum used to buy me other Montgomery books as a treat and boy, did I treasure them ('Emily of New Moon' particularly). I should mention that my parents were devout religious folk, so being allowed to read anything at all was always thrilling.

Probably the most influential and loved book of my childhood. I was probably about 8 or 9 when I first read it (I wish I could remember!)--it was part of a two book set from the book sale leaflet, and what I really wanted was A Little Princess (Shirley Temple movie!). Never heard of that Anne girl!
