Best lines: "Loving him was like remembering a move so ingrained it was instinct. Muscle memory, an amused part of her noted, as she crossed the room to slip her arms around him. The heart is just another muscle."

Worst Line: "There were few ways to react to [her] challenge, and they all ended in violence or sex."

Synopsis: Originally published in a collection of paranormal romance tales, this short story features two lion shape shifters. They have a tumultuous history, but present dangers bring t...more

Zola’s Pride is a short story by Moira Rogers. Zola is a French were-lioness who was cast out of her pride by none other than her mother. Her mother was not only the leader of the pride but a seer. Apparently, the mental stability of a seer diminishes with time and Zola’s mother has definitely become one fry less than a happy meal.
After making a life for herself in New Orleans teaching self- defense to humans and other worldly creatures, Zola is visited by an old love, Walker Gravois. When she...more

Every once in a while one of the freebies that I pick up serves as a helpful reminder. In the case of Zola’s Pride, it reminded me of how much I enjoyed Moira Rogers’ Southern Arcana series.

The female characters in this series are strong, fiercely protective, smart and funny. The males are seriously alpha and just as protective over those they love. The mix of shifters and magic users, the world building and yes the hotness of these books makes them page turning reads. Zola and Walker’s short no...more

This was a quick short story and whilst I haven't read any of the other books in this series, it could easily be read as a stand alone novella.

Zola is a French Lion shapeshifter living alone in New Orleans after her mother kicked Zola out of the pride due to her madness caused by being a Seer. After spending a few years travelling and learning different martial arts, Zola has opened a dojo teaching her skills to other shifters and humans alike.

One day Walker Gravois, her ex-boyfriend, turns up...more

Just a short novella set in the world of the Southern Arcana series, made all that more intense by being less than 50 pages!
Zola is no longer the teenage girl who fell in love with Walker but a grown woman of thirty when he shows up at her Dojo in New Orleans. Her mother has died and her Pride of Lion shifters has been almost eradicated. Walker has come to seek Zola's help by asking her to allow the remaining shifters to relocate to NO and for Zola to become their leader.
Simple, straightforward...more

Another fabulous short story set in the Southern Arcana universe. As always, Moira Rogers has given us strong characters who fight for what they believe in and love with everything inside of them. I'm constantly amazed when authors can put such depth and emotion into stories of this length. Moira Rogers has made Zola a wonderfully sympathetic character who had to strike out on her own after her mother went mad. She's managed to make a life for herself and Walker's appearance throws a wrench into...more

I've read quite a bit of Rogers work, but have never read anything in the 'Southern Arcana' series. I picked up this freebie to give it a try. Zola is a lion shifter who years before was banished from her pack. She has made a life for herself in New Orleans. Old lover Walker has shown up to tell Zola that her mother is dead; and that he needs her help finding out who is murdering members of her former pack.

Not bad at all. I'm used to (and rather enjoy) the quirks of the Rogers duos writing. I wi...more

This is a short story featuring Zola and Walker. He is one of her mother's guards. At one time they were in love, now there is a world of past hurts between them. He wouldn't be there now unless hee mother was dead. Not only is that the case, but he wants her to take over the pride.

The tension between Zola and Walker was believable, but it was the world that drew me in. This is part of Rogers' Southern Arcana series. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy the world.

The romance suffered a bit for the s...more

Zola's Pride by Moira Rogers is a great short read for those who like small quick books. In fact, I feel it was too short. The short story seemed to pull me in from the beginning although it seems to leave out a lot of information I would have loved to know. The plot seemed to be well thought out as was the characters.

With a touch of romance and a bit of action, I give this book four **** stars. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it and I look forward to reading more of Moira Rogers work. I...more

Zola's Pride is a short story in Moira Rogers' Southern Arcana series set between books 2 & 3. The story was originally published in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance 2 but is now also available as a free download on Moira Rogers' website. Although set after book 2 in the SA series I don't think it would give any spoilers so you could read it as an introduction to the author's work.

It's hard to mention the plot of a short story because it is easy to give too much away so I'll just tell...more

Zola has all she has ever wanted in her life. After she was exiled from her pride Zola was alone and scared. And now Walker walks back into her life to mess it all up. Sparks fly but can she get passed him backing away from her all those years ago? I guess she can but its going to have to do because they are all over each other. Walker tells Zola that her crazy mother threatened him with her life. And Zola's like he really does love me, he walked away because her mother the seer of the Pride was...more

Zola's Pride is a lovely, interesting free read from Moira Rogers on their website. I was really interested after reading Cipher how Zola and Walker learnt to work together and how they got together and Zola's Pride answers all these lovely questions. A must for any fan of the Sourthen Arcana series, especially if you've read the first two books.

Short, sweet, hot, and true to the series. I loved this diversion to explain the presence of the lion pride in New Orleans. I read this addition out of order and never really missed anything in the other books, but once I read it I was glad to have made the effort.

Love this book, I wanted more and I think that it could have a little more details in it; but I did read this out of sequence. So, I will want to come back and start from the beginning. I basically love anything that is from Moria Rogers anyways, so I am a little bias.

Hot sexy short. This was my intro to the world of Southern Arcana. Really good. The backstory was strong, but didn't overwhelm the short story. The characters were lovely and tangled together with past heartbreak. High stakes gave the story lots of tension.
Bec
I'm not sure if it's because this was a short story in the middle of a series, but I didn't find the characters all that interesting. The world seemed like something I could enjoy if I started at the beginning.
Trickiegyrl

This was a very quick read. Zola and Walker's chemistry is hot. The only thing that was lacking is background information. I would love to know more about Zola and the pride she left.
Beverly
This was a quick read. The story is short, fast paced and entertaining. As always, it has incredible characters (lion shifters this time), danger, sex, and true love.
Deanna
I would have loved this to be a novel and not a short story as I wanted more - more background; more of the political intrigue; more hot interaction.
Kenya Wright
I devoured this down in less then an hour because I'm cool like that! It was an awesome read! I will probably check out the books in this series now.
Scooper Speaks
Super short and about what you'd expect to find in a story that's less than 100 pages long.
Krissy
lovely little short story about some intriguing minor characters. maybe there should be more...
Katherine O'Grady
This was a kindle freebie.

Good but v short. Enjoyed it more than book 1 in this series.
Hasien
This was ok. It was very short. I did like they they were lion-shifters but it was too fast.
Brandi
Really liked this....gonna have to catch up and read the other books in the series.
Renee
Wish it was longer! I would have loved to read more about Zooa and Walker.
Liz
Short, but well written! I would have liked to see more of the back-story. I smell a prequel?
Denise
3.5 stars. Wish it would have been longer. Did like the insight into Zola.
Saritza
Really liked this short glimpse into Zola's life but felt it was still too short. I want more of her story.
