They were captives of a passion as vast as the wilderness they traveled ...

The perilous trail led straight to love ...

She fled a stifling existence for the glittering social whirl of California's state capital, trading childhood's innocence for a woman's burning desire. It was risky, masquerading as her flighty cousin, but Mandy Ashton was hardly faint of heart-- as she wo

Um... First of all, I think the title says it least to the Freudians in the group. *wink wink nudge nudge*

I appreciate Kat Martin's caveat letter that states she could never publish such a novel these days. It does strike me as odd, though, that her concern was centered around the empowerment of the heroine and not, say, all the ridiculous ethnic stereotypes. Marauding Mexicans. Sinister Spaniards. Inscrutable Injuns. And a Sassy, Southern Black woman for a mammy. Accents included in pu

this book wasn't really good at all.there really wasn't any humor, which to me makes a book fall incredibly short of the mark.
at the very beginning of the book the author wrote that when she wrote this book back in the '80s it was a whole different style of romance and that it isn't like modernday historical romances. i was interested and somewhat excited to read this book because i'm sick of modernday books because the guys are all the same.i expected more and i didn't get very far into this bo

I had this book on my TBR pile for quite some time, so I finally read it & I have to say I'm glad I did. In rating this book, you can not to rely on the same criteria that are used for books published two years ago. First of all, because this book was published in 1988, and, secondly, because it was the first novel by Kat Martin. The book clearly shows the enormous potential & I am not surprised that she became New York Times bestselling author. If you would like to find out more about t ...more

classic 1980's bodice ripper. they hate each other, they missunderstand each other and they can keep your hands off each other. so much happens. they spend time making each other jealous and neither will admit any real feelings. both of them come back from the brink of death or what appears to be the brink of death several times. the villains are stereotypical and some of the characters are ridiculous. but omg it is a good read.

I could tell this was written a while ago, and in the beginning there was a note from the author stating such. I still found it entertaining, it's a true bodice ripper to its core. I think her dress gets ripped from her body like 8 times...

I could definitely tell that this was Martin's first book considering its reads like it is an author's first. In this case the books is still a win as far as I am concerned. I enjoyed the characters and their relationship as it grows throughout the story and their journey. It gets tiring reading characters that get along too well or too fast and fall in love the same way. That can not be said for Sam and Hawk at all as most of the time they can't stand each other even if they like each other-- t ...more

Will you still love me when you find out the person I really am really?

Mandy Ashton is leading a stuffy, confining life in the Wild West with her father while he serves out his military term. When her disreputable cousin devises a plan to have them switch lives Mandy does not think twice about the consequences, she agrees. The thought of getting out of that horrid place and into the big city lights is the o

Recommends it for: Anyone who loves historical romances
I've always enjoyed books by Kat Martin, so I was excited when I came across Magnificent Passage. It's an enjoyable read, though a bit melodramatic with a Perils of Pauline type of heroine and a touch of violence here and there. But don't let that stop you from reading this book as you'll be sure to enjoy the romantic adventure. This is the kind of book where the good guys are really good and the bad guys really bad. You'll root for the lovers until the very end.

Kat never disapoints me, she keeps me turning the pages and not wanting the story to end!!! Lot's of love, sensual scenes, American Indians vs the White man, (Hawk who grew up with the Cheyene Indians and Amanda or is her name Julia fall for each other hard, love so strong, no one could keep them apart or can they? Read this book, great read! Action, murders, sensual scenes, a bit of history, a must read!

Whew. I have never read a romance before this one and man it did not fail me. I could not put this book down. I will pay for staying up late reading this book. Worth the lack of sleep.

Not bad for a first book but not Ms. Martins' best work either. Things got a bit mushy at the end.

3.5 stars. An enjoyable read. A throw back to the classic bodice ripper.

“Another hour of strained silence passed. Hawk left to speak with an aquaintance in another car.
"Would you like to tell me about it?" James offered as soon as his friend was out of earshot.
Mandy looked out the window, shamefaced. "I'd really rather not discuss it, if you don't mind."
"You know, even if he is a friend, I'd be happy to black his eye if-"
"Whatever you say." He sighed resignedly, leaning back against the tapestry seats.”
“The trail gets a might steep through here. I'd advise you to start paying attention instead of daydreaming about your beau."
His tone annoyed her and she couldn't resist answering in kind.
"What's the matter, Mr. Langley, afraid I'll fall off a cliff, and you won't be able to collect your reward? That is what your after, isn't it? The reward. Just like in the posters:Wanted dead or alive,Julia Ashton, for unspeakable crimes of the heart.”
