Juan flicked the brim of his cowboy hat up. "Never a dull moment."
"I miss dull moments," Travis mused.

3.5 stars. Surviving the zombie apocalypse has never interested me more than it does right now. The As The World Dies trilogy is the perfect thing to fill in the gap for me until The Walking Dead comes back on television.

Three cheers for books which give me a variety of things to read about :
~ Violence, gore and all-around ass-kicking.
~ People battling their inner demons.

Zombies. They're scary aren't they? They eat your flesh, they don't feel pain, and they never EVER stop. But what about humans? Humans who are dead set on surviving? Humans who have a screwed up sense of humanity in this dying world? And these humans, they may not eat your face, or pound themselves on a wall for days on end to get a taste of you, but they have intelligence, they have strength… and they have weapons. Zombies are NOT the only enemy anymore! I'm not even sure which I fear the most....more

Sometimes when a plan goes awry, it still works out as intended, side effects and all. After finishing Frater's first book, The First Days, I quickly ordered the sequel from the library, planning to save it for a slow and deadly boring night of the living dead shift. Unfortunately, I was placed 'on-call,' which meant while I didn't have to work that moment, it was quite possible in the next eight hours I would be needed for brains to work. I celebrated my night almost-off by staying up afraid of...more

I learned a valuable lesson while reading this book. My habit of reading right before bed has never been too much of an issue but with Fighting to Survive (as well as As The World Dies) it made it impossible to get any sleep. I could not put the books down, believe me I tried! Once I started reading I did not feel tired at all so I simply kept reading all through the night.

I enjoyed reading more about Katie & Jenni and all the other characters from the first book that I came to like. I also...more

I absolutely loved Nerit the former Israeli army sniper who suffered a devastating loss in the First Days, Volume I of this series. She is seriously awesome with a weapon. Takes crap from nobody. Makes final calls and trains everyone to fight back and shoot straight. When others blink or have second thougths. She charges ahead and protects the fort from zombies and bandits.

Katie and Travis's relationship is one that will most likely be talked about fo...more

I can't say enough wonderful things about not only this book, but the series. I want everyone to know that I am the last person on earth that would have ever believed I'd like a book like this. Imagine my shock when I not only liked it- but LOVED it!
Rhiannon Frater has a true gift people- I'm so serious! I plan on reading more "zombie" books in the future but I don't have a huge hope that any will compare to this. I don't even see it as possible.
Don't think that because I don't know my way aro...more

I've been looking forward to getting back with Jenni and Katie as they fight their way through zombie hoards and figure out their complicated lives, and I'm happy to say that Fighting to Survive is a superbly thrilling read! Frater has once again balanced the violence, gore and horror of a zombocalpyse with a strong sense of community within the Fort and heartwarming relationships between her major characters.

Having enjoyed reading about Katie in the last book, I found that this time around I st...more

(I listened to the audio book version)

I loved the first book, so we got it for my dad as an audio book. Since I never got around to buying the second book, he talked me into listening to it. While I can go through periods of listening to a lot of audio books, I really do not devour them the way he does. Needless to say, this took me awhile to get through. Unfortunately, my thoughts are not completely coherent and fully formulated. Please hang with me on this one!

I was happy to see continued cha...more

This book was even better than the first. We already have the backstory to most of the characters and now we get to see them stop running and start defending. This one (at least for me) was more gritty and brutal than the first. Apparently Frater's cousin was murdered, and you have to wonder how this informed her writing style. There were some things I didn't expect when it came to crime and zombies, or even roving gangs, drugs and zombies for that matter. It's actually shocking some of things t...more

This book, well really this serial, is precisely the equivalent of a cheesy tv show or maybe some sort of a snack food. It has that certain quality of being just good enough without really providing any substance. Yet if it's there, it's just entertaining enough or serviceable enough to keep eating or not change the chanel, depending on which metaphor you went with there. The best word to describe it is adequate. Yes, there are strong female characters, but all of their emotions are overexplaine...more

Know how to beat a crippling addiction to zombie books? Find the most poorly written series available and read until your eyes bleed. I think that this book has finally shaken the last vestiges of my zombie love from me. The scenes with actual zombies are mildly entertaining, but the endless (ENDLESS!) pages of characters shacking up with one another, thinking about shacking up with one another, or agonizing about having shacked up with someone had me wanting to pull my eyes out and flush them a...more

I borrowed a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for them.

Review:

Fighting to Survive continues the story first established in The First Days. Unfortunately for the survivors in Ashley Oaks there is a new menace in town and this time it's not just the Zombies.

I really enjoyed this sequel to The First Days. It felt comforting seeing the characters again. By the start of Fighting to Survive the people living in the fort have swelled in numbers....more

This is a review of both book 1 and 2.

I had a couple problems with these books, but overall I found them to be fairly enjoyable.

SPOILERS AHEAD

First, Nerit needs her own book. Best character by far.

One of my major issues was the constant descriptions of Jenni as “crazy.” Yes, she was in an abusive relationship and was dealing with the psychological trauma of that as well as the trauma of the Zombie apocalypse, but I didn’t really understand what she did to be described as crazy all the time. It b...more

Zombie Gore---AWESOME!

Note: I actually read this a few weeks ago and my bad for not writing a review. I didn't take notes either so this will be very general and no quotes---though there were a few from my boy Juan that I loved!

What I Loved: When I started the book I was worried about the "middle book" syndrome but this book suffered from none of that! The characters were just what I remembered! I loved reading their survival...more

In this, the second book of a trilogy that was first produced on the internet, the author moves us past the first few days of the zombie apocalypse detailed in book 1 and on to the nuts and bolts of the survivors living in a construction site in a small Texas town trying to rebuild the world around them...or at least trying to give themselves someplace safe to call their own.
This book is not focused on one particular plot point, as we are given some of the "days of our lives" treatment of what...more

Very rarely does a series come along that truly reaches out, grabs me by the collar and utterly shakes the shit out of me. Sure, we can probably all think of a few (Mistborn for one) that manages to captivate you in such a way that you simply cannot stop reading.

It’s been a while since I’ve gone down this obsessive road. That was until a friend suggested I give this series a try.

I’m not comparing this saga in any way to the writing of Sanderson, but what it does do is manage to immerse you so d...more

In Fighting to Survive, the sequel to The First Days, we renter the zombie apocalypse world of a small Texan town called Ashley Oakes. Here we are reunited with the kickass heroines, Katie and Jenni, along with a large group of their fellow survivors. As the second book in the As the World Dies series, the danger and zombies have stepped their game up. The undead are much more persistent and pose a greater threat as the survivors try to fortify their camp and expand the fort into the neighboring...more

Whew! Man, my head is in a whirl. That was intense! While I'm glad that I don't live in a world where I need to be, there's a part of me that wishes I were as badass as Nerit. That bitch ROCKS.

The trucks were about ten feet from the gate when Juan gave the signal. The crane, which had been stationed overhead early that morning, dropped a small storage unit onto the bandits' vehicles. Nerit smiled with satisfaction as it crashed down, clipping the front end of the blue truck and sending the hood

Tomorrow was a new day. A new beginning. And that was all any of them could hope for anymore.

Fighting to Survive starts up right after the first book in the As the World Dies Trilogy. The first chapter, each section is dedicated to getting us up to date with whats happening with our favorite survivors. This is another non-stop zombie thrilling kill ride... our ever growing rag-tag group of survivors has a vigilantes and bandits are on the way. Not to mention hords of zombies are showing up dai...more

First and foremost, I will say overall I did like this book. I may not have loved it, but I did not hate it either.

Other reviews warned me that this book was disappointing, so I knew what to expect, but I did not think it would be that bad. I was wrong. A good portion of the book felt like a chore to read it. I found myself speeding through the book, not because I enjoyed it so much, but because I wanted it to be over. The book actually started off very well, and I have to say the whole beginnin...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, great action, humor and some really touching sad parts, something for everyone. It was a great sequel to "First Days: As the World Dies". I found that the main characters, especially Jenni & Katie were developed further in this book and you really got a glimpse into their strengths and weaknesses. There was a lot of action and not just gratuitous slaughter of the undead. Several characters, such as Curtis & Travis, acted as the moral voice for the group an...more

I dug into this one as soon as I finished book one, The First Days. I feel as if I’ve been camping out at the fort with the survivors. That’s how immersed I was in this book.

In The First Days, there was a lot of running, shooting, zombie encounters and general craziness. What I liked about this installment is that it wasn’t just more of the same. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of zombie insanity, but that’s not the primary focus in this installment.

While the survivors still a...more

What I found most enjoyable about this book was the author’s willingness to depict a realistic lifestyle for the survivors. The book depicts violence, and rape, and chaos in a way that doesn't glorify it, but also doesn't sugarcoat it either. The survivors that are forced to use violence against humans and zombies alike to survive experience trauma, and guilt. However, there is also a strong willingness to survive amongst the characters in this series. A drive to negotiate the world as it is, ra...more

Time once again for another chat about another book! I just love reading and spreading the word about good books. And the book I`m reviewing today is a good book, but, in my opinion - which isn`t worth enough for a stick of gum - it could have been a great book if not for one point that really detracted from it for me. So let`s cream and sugar and stir and talk about Fighting to Survive by Rhiannon Frater.

First off, yes, it is another zombie book. I know, I know, but I write gay zombie comedic r...more

My Thoughts: This was a solid sequel to a thrilling first. All the characters that I loved were back and some new ones were introduced. The zombie killing action was thrilling and frightening, and the human struggle for hope and survival was just as heart rending as in the first book.
It started off a little slow and more characters stepped into the spotlight, making it less of Jenni and Kat...more

Rhiannon Frater is the type of writer that never fails to entertain me. From the books I’ve read so far, I would definitively recommend all of them to fans of their genre. With FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, I was expecting a sequel slump, but as I read on, every scene seemed to keep feeding my addiction for the series.

What I enjoy the most about zombie books is not really the zombie killings and zombie attacks. It’s the stories behind each survivor and how, as a whole, they’re able to survive something c...more

There are things in our life that we can't truly control. Lapses that are inevitable. Facts that is unchangeable. In this sequel I realized that we must live to the fullest. Do our best because maybe tomorrow we might regret what we have failed to do. We must apreciate life. The book emphasized that no matter wicked humans are, there are still some some people who is willing to help others no matter what is your color, creed, and stand.

I found my opinion of this book evolve as it progressed. The first half with the hotel sequences had me at a five, then it dipped down to a 4 with the bandits, which didn't come across as a tough enough threat. The fort had their plan in place awful quick and it went off without a hiccup. But the intriguing ending brought it back up to 5 stars. The other aspect that earned it a high rating was the character development that worked its way throughout the book. I especially liked the thought Frate...more
