Kari can't believe she actually agreed to smuggle someone across the border. She's extremely nervous at the border crossing, and Agent Adam Cortez can't help but notice. But before he decides to take a closer look into her van, another disturbance calls him away and he lets her pass. But he recognizes her last name and her face. After he does a background check on her, he realizes her sister is the girlfriend of famed Mexican drug lord Carlos Moreno.

Adam knows he shouldn't start his own private investigation of Kari, but Carlos is responsible for killing Adam's girlfriend years ago, and he has wanted revenge ever since. When he sees two of Carlos' men coming out of Kari's house the next day, he knows something is up.
Unknown to Adam, those two men have just threatened Kari. She needs to smuggle drugs for them across the border in one week or they will kill her sister, who owes them a lot of money. Confused and scared, Kari agrees but is terrified of the outcome. Slowly, Adam enters her life and trust and a relationship begin to build.

Meanwhile, Maria (the girl Kari smuggled into the USA) starts work at a local hotel as a maid. The hotel is owned by one of Carlos' men, and many drug deals go down here. Maria notices one of the men who often buys drugs is the same man who saved her all those years ago.

I really enjoyed this book. Jill Sorenson writes such a fascinating story. Although this book is labeled a contemporary romance, it read more like a romantic suspense to me. Kari is in danger from page one, and there are some very suspenseful moments. Kari's fear and predicament come through so well. My only complaint might be that I don't know if I believe Adam would sleep with Kari or start a physical relationship as quickly as he did. He is so devoted to his job and plays by the rules so fiercely. He knows Kari is somehow involved with Carlos Moreno — would he let his lust rule over his serious beliefs? I'm not sure.

Otherwise, I did enjoy their relationship. Caught in the Act has such great tension, not only between Kari and Adam, but with all of the supporting characters. It completely held my attention the entire time, and I didn't know how it was all going to turn out.

Maria and Ian add a lot to the story, and I loved their storyline. Maria is a fabulous character who made me laugh. She's paired with the deeply undercover Ian, and it's almost as if we get two romances in one book. They were both so well developed but never to the detriment of Kari and Adam.

Caught in the Act is a very entertaining, engaging book. Definitely my favorite by Jill Sorenson. Highly recommend it.

I won this book in a contest and read it on my latest flight home from California. It's been a while since I read an actual book (as opposed to an ebook) and I found that I enjoyed holding the book in my hand again.

I was interested more in Maria the illegal the heroine smuggled and Ian, the hero's best friend, DEA undercover agent and the officer who found Maria raped and beaten four years ago when she tried to come to the US. After reading Sorenson’s The Edge of Night last year, I was impressed by her writing, her characters, and her ability to occasionally have me rooting for the bad guys. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed that book, and I am happy to say that Caught in the Act is just as wonderful.

Kari is all alone in the world except for her drug addict sister who is hooked up with a drug kingpin. All Kari wants is to run her store and get her sister some help. When two men come and threaten Kari – forcing her to run drugs for her sister’s freedom – Kari is at a loss for what to do. On top of that, a sexy border patrol agent starts hanging around, and Keri is caught between her desire to save her sister and her strong emotions towards Adam.

Adam loves his job as a customs and border patrol agent, but when he recognizes Kari crossing the border one day, his desire to do anything to bring down Carlos Moreno has him doing things he never imaged possible. But the more time he spends following and getting to know her, the more he starts to fall for her. When it’s obvious she is in over her head, Adam wants to help her out. But Adam is at a loss for how to do so without losing his job and her in the process.

I was amazed, again, at how Sorenson was able to make me feel for the bad guys in this book. Now, don’t get me wrong, there was still plenty of hate to go around, but two villains in particular stood out to me as conflicted and honorable (in their own screwed up way) characters. I found myself hoping that one in particular was really a good guy undercover, because his actions throughout the story kept endearing me to his character. Very few authors have ever had me cheering for the bad guys, and this is the second time Soreson has done so.

Of course the bad guys weren’t to be overshadowed by the good guys. I really loved that we got a bit of a twofer in the romance department. There were even times when I felt like our main hero and heroine were outshined by the secondary characters Ian and Maria. I absolutely adored their moments together. Ian was tender with Maria, especially given all that her knew about her history. Maria was such a strong and passionate woman, and given her history of violence, she came across as such an incredible person. Their moments together were so tender and yet the tension got higher and higher with each encounter.

Kari and Adam were also larger than life characters. The sexual tension between them was so sizzling that it literally jumped off the pages. I could feel their desires and attraction and hesitancies about getting involved with one another. I liked that they didn’t fall into bed with each other so easily, especially since it was so obvious that they were both hesitant. But once they did, it was also clear as day that they were both swarmed with feelings they weren’t ready for: Adam having to deal with his past relationships and Kari with feeling a bit of betrayal of her sister. While it seemed as if their happily ever after came a little too quickly, I will admit to being turned into a puddle of goo with Adam’s declaration of love and devotion. It might be one of the best I’ve ever read.

I can only hope that Sorenson continues to create a series out of these characters. With the way that this book ended, it seems as if the potential for Ian and Maria to get their story is high. Not only is their HEA left up in the air, but there are also so many questions surrounding the final showdown, who survived and who didn’t. I NEED to know how it all wraps up, especially since I’ve already become so attached to these characters.

All in all I was so happy with this read. The action was never ending, kept the story moving and me on the edge of my seat. The suspense isn’t super mysterious, but the unpredictability of the drug dealers kept me guessing as to where the story would go next. And with TWO great romances, the book was steamy and sexy from cover to cover.
I give Caught in the Act a B+(less)

My only complaint about this is the age of the leading female character. Kari is only 26, but she owns her own home and already runs a successful business and she has a university degree. I don't buy it; in this day and age it wouldn't happen even if she managed her money wisely. She seemed beyond her years, with experience in life and work and I think it would've been fine to make her older. Usually romantic suspense is a hit or miss for me. I need more romance than suspense in order for me to enjoy a book. Luckily, Caught in the Act had the right balance and I enjoyed the book from start to finish.

When he notices that she has connections to an infamous Mexican drug lord, he decides that he can use Kari to finally take down Carlos Moreno. Moreno is also Kari's sister, Sasha, boyfriend and in Kari's mind, the reason why her sister is strung out and hooked on drugs. Kari will do anything to get her sister away from Moreno, even it means making a deal with the devil himself.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Caught in the Act. This is my first time reading Jill Sorenson and it won't be my last. What I enjoyed most was how steamy it was. I love my smut and I loved how Adam and Kari had no problem getting down and dirty. There is a lot of action and suspense and I love how the bad guys were truly bad.

I also enjoyed the secondary characters story line - Ian and Maria. Ian is working undercover monitoring Moreno and his cohorts and gets mixed up in Kari's entanglement with Moreno. The reach of Moreno is far and touches everyone near and dear to Kari.

We learn that Ian and Maria have a past and as the book progresses, Maria remembers Ian as the agent who rescued her from la migra. She in turn helps him and doesn't blow his cover. With each encounter, they both grow closer even though they can not be together. I really loved this subplot of the book and I hope to see more of Ian and Maria in the future. Their story cannot end without a happy resolution that satisfies Ian, Maria and me as the reader. Haha!

I hope there is a follow-up to Caught in the Act. I really liked this book. It was the perfect mix of romance and suspense. I loved the action, in and out of the bedroom, heh. I will definitely be reading more of Sorenson's work in the future.

I've been knee deep in a reading slump for the past few months and this is the first book that I picked up and started, that I actually finished. It's safe to say that I enjoyed this story. Not only was this the first book that I've finished in months but it's also the first romantic suspense that I've read in a long time.

This book follows Kari Strauss as she falls head over heels in love with the Border Patrol guy, Adam Cortez. Kari owns a boutique in San Diego and travels to Mexico weekly to pick up new products to sell in her store. Her Mom and Dad are dead and the only family she has is her younger sister Sasha who is the girlfriend to a known drug lord, Carlos Moreno. Kari isn't too thrilled with her sister's choice of boyfriends and lifestyle but she's failed at trying to get her sister away from that crowd so it is what it is.

It's amazing how much can happen in a week. On a trip home from Mexico, Kari helps smuggle a young woman named Maria that she befriended while on one of her many trips across the border. They hit it off instantly and become really good friends. True friends that would ride or die for a sister and I really enjoyed seeing their friendship blossom over the course of this book.

So much pops off in this book and I ate it all up. Kari's sister has wracked up a huge debt with her mobster boyfriend and if Kari wants to save her sister (from the killing those drug punks are gonna give her) then she has to smuggle some drugs on her trips to Mexico. If she doesn't, her sister gets it. As you can imagine, that freaks Kari the hell out and she has no idea what to do. She never pictured herself as a criminal and all in a matter of a week, she's smuggled an illegal immigrant across the border (and got away with it) and now has to smuggle drugs across the border to save her sister's life.

Enter Adam Cortez. Adam Cortez is a border patrol police officer with a chip on his shoulder. The chip's name is Carlos Moreno. He's responsible for killing his girlfriend, Penelope and Adam hasn't forgotten, nor has he let go of his vengeance. Unofficially, he's been tracking Moreno's activity and when Karina Strauss comes into his lane at the border, he decides to add her to his list of people to investigate. And investigates her, he does. He does an unofficial background check on her, he stakes out her house and wonders if she's doing anything dirty for that dirty bastard, Moreno. When he sees Moreno's henchmen coming out of her house, he knows that she is. To further his investigation, he makes contact with her. He buys things from her shop and gets close to her to try to get some information, any kind of information that would bring Moreno down and like they always do in romantic suspense novels, feelings develop.

The romance between Adam and Kari happens really fast but I couldn't be bothered by that because I liked the two of them together. Adam was a smexy beast and I liked him for Kari. I really enjoyed getting to know Kari and seeing how strong she was in this book. She tried to live a good life but sometimes you had to do bad things to take care of the people you love and she didn't shy away from doing what she had to do to keep her sister safe. I liked that and everything she went through, all of the emotions that she showed throughout the book rang true with me and I just really liked her.

I enjoyed the secondary romance between Ian and Maria too. Their story is left hanging at the end of the book so I'm hoping that means that they're getting their own story soon. Does anyone know? I'm anxious for it if it's on the way. I want their story, I'd like to get to know Maria more. She was such an interesting character, so strong and independent and I want to know more about her. Ian too. I liked his friendship with Adam. When he tells Moreno, "If you shoot my best friend, I'm gonna freaking kill you." I laughed out loud because I would so hope that my best friend would say the same thing to a drug overlord that we were working with to save our true loves.

I really enjoyed this book and am glad that I picked it up. Sorenson does a great job of throwing us readers right into the thick of things and she has a way with words that kept me anxious for more. Thanks for the great story and please, please...write Ian and Maria's story.

As much as I enjoyed this story, the amount of infractions that both Adam and Ian did in this book where their jobs were concerned, I thought it was unrealistic that they didn't get into more trouble then they actually did but aside from that, this was a delightful read.

I like it! I've been out of the romantic suspense loop. Humans just don't do it for me these days, LOL. But the description for Caught in the Act snagged me. Kari Strauss crosses from San Diego into Tijuana every week to pick up arts and crafts for her boutique. Karina Strauss main goal is to get her sister back. For years they have been separated only acting as friends never real sisterly. It’s no secret that I love Ms. Sorenson’s books and that she’s become one of my favorite Romantic Suspense authors. Her stories have it all: great action, complex characters and scorching hot sex (very important!). Caught in the Act is no exception.

Karina Strauss has a successful store where she sells Latin American crafts of all kinds. She regularly crosses the border to Mexico in order to buy more objects. One day, Maria, a woman she’s friendly with, asks her to help her get to the US, and Karina, an immigrant herself, decides to help her. That’s how she meets Adam Cortez, the Border Protection officer who stops her. She tries to seduce him into distraction but he’s no fool, however he gets a call and decides to let her pass (maybe he was a bit of a fool).

Now Karina and Maria are safe, but the happiness won’t last long because it turns out that Karina’s sister has fallen in love with the head of a drug cartel and now he wants her help to smuggle drugs into the country, just as she did with Maria. If she does it they won’t hurt her sister.

Meanwhile, Adam’s been following Karina. On the one hand she was nervous and suspicions, and on the other hand, she was hot. So he figures that he either will uncover a criminal or get a date. That’s when he sees her with the dealers, the same people who years ago killed his girlfriend. So finally he has the perfect opportunity to get revenge, what he doesn’t know is that he will fall in love instead.

How do I know that this book is good? The hero is practically a widower obsessed with the dead girlfriend, and I still managed to love the story. And yes, ever since I wrote that post I’ve come across a ton of widowed heroes, I should have kept my mouth shut. But I digress. What I’m trying to say is that this was a very entertaining story.

Karina was a great heroine. She’s ballsy and loving, willing to do anything for a sister that’s been less than ideal and for a woman she’s barely met but desperately needs her help. Maybe she was reckless, but that’s a must-have quality when you’re a Romantic Suspense heroine. But regardless of her actions I never thought she was stupid.

Adam was a harder to like, but appealing nonetheless. Ms. Sorenson has an uncanny ability to create heroes that behave like assholes but are also adorable. I think she knows how to write men, her heroes are flawed and never perfect or too dreamy and behave like real people, and that’s what makes them so appealing. My one complain, and this is an issue I often have with her books, is that Adam can’t decide whether to sleep with Karina or arrest her, so he does both. He doesn’t arrest her, but he does seduce her to get more information. And I think that’s a stupid way to deceive someone. Why can’t he keep it in his pans? And why do they keep falling in love with suspects? When heroes in law enforcement act this way I always think it’s unprofessional and it annoys me.

The secondary characters are even more compelling than Adam and Karina. Maria also gets her own love interest in the form of Ian, an undercover cop. They share a heartbreaking past and when they meet again they do it in less-than-perfect circumstances. They don’t have an ideal ending so I hope theirs is the next book. I love star-crossed lovers and can’t wait to see them get their happily ever after.

I was pleasantly surprised by the villain. He had depth and in a twisted way cared about Karina’s sister. I’m happy to read a book where the author doesn’t cut corners and gives us interesting villains instead of making them cartoonish and walking stereotypes.

If you’re a fan of Romantic Suspense Caught in the Act is a must read, as well as everything Ms. Sorenson writes. And did I mention that the sex is HOT? Yes? Well, I’ll say it again, the sex is scorching hot! Go read it.(less)

This is a heavy book much like The Edge of Night. While the main characters get their HEA, you do not walk away from this book with a warm fuzzy feeling.

That being said, this is a really, really well-written book. I can't explain how Ms. Sorenson does it, but she takes these characters who seem so black and white--good guys vs. bad guys and suddenly makes them human. The good guy is still the good guy and the bad guy is still a bad guy, but we see this human side. I could almost sympathize with...more

Moreno demands that Kari smuggle a package for him in exchange for her sister’s freedom. And they also tell Maria she must work for them at the Hotel del Oro where Chey Pena who words for Moreno runs a drug selling business. Adam who had a feeling something was fishy with Kari at the border crossing inspection follows her home and see's Chey leaving and assumes she is working for them but also feel something for her he has felt since the death of his wife at the hands of Moreno.

Adam decides he is going to get close to Kari in hopes that he can get close to Moreno to take him down once and for all not expecting to start to feel something for her.

Ian Foster has been Adam's friend since childhood. They both went through the academy together. Ian left CBP after finding a girl in the desert raped and beaten. He is now on an undercover op at the Hotel del Oro as a drug addict buy from Chey. We find out when Maria and Ian run into each other that she was the girl he found that night years ago raped and beaten and that neither had forgotten the other.

The deception from all parties runs high. Kari feels she much do the drug run to try and save her sister and get her the help she finally needs. But as with alot of addicts the sister doesn’t want to be saved.

Adam and Kari's story pretty much wraps up at the end of this book. But Ian and Maria story I hope gets its conclusion in another book.

Kari Strauss is a good girl doing bad things for good reasons. She smuggles a young Mexican woman, Maria, across the border. She agrees to smuggle drugs, in an attempt to rescue her drug addict sister from the clutches of the bad guys.

Border Patrol Officer Adam Cortez is a good guy, as well. He suspects Kari of being up to no good, and tells himself that’s why he’s keeping an eye on her. These two are on opposite sides of the law, if not opposite sides of the sheets..

Jill Sorenson just writes a really good romantic suspense. I adore how her characters are almost so down to earth while everything they go through feels so realistic. Kari is a boutique owner in San Diego who travels across the border frequently to find new merchandise in Mexico. I discovered Jill Sorenson last year and the second I read Crash Into Me I knew this author is one I have to keep on my radar. Since then, I read all her books and she became one of my all time favorite authors. Her books shine with great characters, heart-melting romance and a gripping suspenseful plot. Caught in the Act was all that and perhaps even a bit more.

Kari Strauss is an independent woman. She’s in her twenties and already owns her own rather successful business. But it’s not all sunshine and roses for her. Her little sister is a trouble magnet with a serious bad-news boyfriend and Kari is drawn into a world she should rather not sink deeper into. Kari is a compasionate woman with a big heart- she wants to help others even when it would be better for herself not to. A very lovable character.

Adam is a touh guy with a past. He’s on his own personal vendetta and focused to punish those who ruined his life. At first I had a hard time warming up to him. He’s so single-minded about his revenge that his compassion is lacking. I wanted to slap him when he did this and that without even thinking about anyone besides himself. Luckily that changes after a few chapters.

We also have our secondary characters- Maria and Ian. I loved their story with a passion. Maria is such a sweet and lovable girl. She’s strong in her own way and she stands up for those who matter for her. And oh my when she and Ian met again I was totally glued to the pages.

Sorenson’ s strength is characterisation. I adore how she always makes me feel so much for her characters. I’m usually not so fond of switching POVs but it does work for me with her books. At the end of each chapter I wanted to know more about this particular POV but then starting the next one I was drawn into that story line again. Very addicting and with actually noticing a few hours were spent glued to the pages.

The plot is twisted around immigration and drug cartels with some romance in the mix. Sorenson seems to have a talent for research. Her setting always seems so real- her way of projecting these things actually transports you to the scene.

Caught in the Act is a thrilling and suspenseful read. The characters shine and it will be hard to even hate the bad guys. I couldn’t put this one down and I’m already counting the days till her next title hits the shelves. An author you all should give a try. I can’t recommend Caught in the Act enough.

I considered giving this three stars because the writing was good. The sentence structure, the pacing, the language was perfectly fine. I just about abandoned it because the character Kari started out in TSTL territory and never really managed make her way out. Very aggravating to see a main character make stupid choice after stupid choice. While everyone was moaning about Sasha needing to get into rehab they should have been pushing Kari into treatment. She needed help.

Ah, well, you can't love an author's every book.

This still had the gritty, steamy, fast-paced feel that I liked about all Sorenson's other books, but I couldn't buy either Adam's or Kari's motivations. Three times I wanted Kari to tell the hot, competent, child-loving policeman her problems so he could help and three times she'd didn't. And, if I'm going to be bad at heroines for having sex at career-ruinous times, I should look askance at heroes for doing the same thing.

Shelves: contemporary, suspense, read-in-2012

Jill Sorenson's full-length romantic suspense is so well done, and she consistently impresses me. The characters are gritty and believable, and I was on the edge of my seat wondering how things were going to turn out. It's a testament to her fantastic storytelling that I would even read about such scary topics (gangs, drug cartels, etc). But she always pushes me just out of my comfort zone, and I appreciate that in a writer. Oh, and the dual romances were, as always, a joy to read.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense by Jill Sorenson. Yes, it's hot, but the characters are fully developed and the plot with its twists and turns is filled with danger and emotion. A gripping read, and I want to read more by this author.

A hot romance, an original plot and a strong subplot that could easily lead to a sequel. Well-researched with strong likeable characters--Maria was my favourite, but even the villains had depth.
