Wonderful book by Kristen Ashley! Although, I must warn you, it was 1,085 pages, (according to my Nook), and patience is a MUST while reading this story.

Lord Douglas Ashton is a wealthy, tall, dark and handsome Englishman who, years ago, inherited the mansion that is Sommersgate House. He and his sister, Tamsin, were raised in the house, by parents who probably should never have had children, and who also mentally or verbally abused them. Douglas's only glint of happiness was that brought on by his sister, who adored and admired him relentlessly. Because their parents were detached and very cold towards Douglas, especially, his demeanor understandably changes throughout the years, leaving a 38 year old, very handsome man who demonstrates authority with very little emotion, and very few words. Unfortunately for him, tragedy strikes as Tamsin and her husband, Gavin, are killed in a horrific car accident, leaving three children behind; all under the age of 12.

Julia Fairfax is Gavin's sister and equally devastated by the death of her beloved brother and his wife. When news of Gavin and Tamsin's will is revealed, Julia immediately quits her job, sells her house and leaves her family in Indiana to co-parent the children with the elusive Lord Douglas Ashton at Sommersgate mansion. Fortunately for Julia, she has visited the mansion as a guest many times for holidays and family gatherings, and always felt an attraction towards Lord Douglas. Although, never really knowing how he feels about her, she carries on and attempts to make a home in a far away place that is nothing like "home."

This is the first book by Kristen Ashley that I have read and the writing alone was lovely. She is VERY descriptive and (at least in this book), drags events, situations and feelings out over time. Nothing is quick, nothing is fast and quite frankly, when I saw that the book was so long, I thought to myself, "this better be a great freaking book!" And what a great book it was! I can honestly say that I never became bored or wished we could "move it along," however, I was irritated by Julia's indecisiveness and non-combative characteristics. Thankfully, she would surprise me, though, and I found myself almost clapping my hands for her! This is a very romantic story about two extremely damaged indiviuals who find love, but have no idea what to do next. It was genuine, it was unpredictable and it is one of my favorite books to date. This was definitely better than Penmort Castle but I still don’t like the hocus pocus stuff interrupting the beautiful romances that KA has been giving us. While we don’t have the turbo-charged banshee totally jumping the shark the way we did in the first book, we still have a bit of a screamer for a spook and there’s really no need for it. Anyway, this time we have three young children orphaned when their parents were killed in a car crash and are left in the care of Julia & Douglas, their paternal aunt and maternal uncle, in their parents’ will. Julia is an American divorcee and has given up everything to come to live in Sommersgate House in England and raise her brother’s children along with Douglas, heir to the stately pile, and the children’s mother’s brother. Still with me??

This had all the hallmarks of a classic gothic Victorian melodrama – it even felt a little like Jane Eyre with Julia taking on Jane’s role, Douglas as Rochester, Mrs Kilpatrick as Mrs Fairfax and even little Ruby as Adele. Of course, Jane is not a governess and Douglas goes to great lengths to make sure that no one sees her as a hired help but very much as part of the family.

So Douglas – he’s a bit of a cold fish to begin with and his story is actually quite heartbreaking and slowly revealed to us during the novel. We begin to understand his cold demeanour and I loved how he very slowly warmed up towards the children. He decides very early on that he and Julia should get married but Julia fights it all the way. She’s been married before and is in no rush to have another go and feels she can marry for nothing less than love. Douglas does love her but it will take him just about the whole novel to realise it.

Julia herself is a wonderfully warm character. She’s been raised with love and wants nothing less for her nieces and nephew despite their terrible loss. Some of the scenes with Julia and the children were beautiful – there was one particular scene, on Christmas Day, which I felt so deeply, my vision blurred from tears. Beautifully written.

While I enjoyed it, there were a few things I felt were totally unnecessary. Monique, Douglas’ mother really had a starring role as a Monster-in-Law and she drags up Julia’s ex husband who appeared for a fairly extraneous scene that really didn’t contribute to the overall plot. Douglas has some kind of sneaky beaky MI6 role and had disappeared for 2 years in the past and returned scarred and this is never explained. But, these were minor gripes, and I mostly enjoyed the romance and tension between Julia and Douglas.

I did wonder why the heroines are always American and not English when this series is set exclusively in England but have decided that this could be something to do with the fact that KA herself is an American living in England and she’s sharing those experiences through her heroines.

So, a good 4 star contemporary romance, with a brief ghostly interlude.

I agree with other reviews! This was way better than the first in this series(and IMO, the best of this series). The characters are more endearing and whether it is the addition of the children or energy of Aunt Jewel or the Darcy-like Douglas...IDK, but KA's craft, characterization, shines again!

The plot could have been helped by a deeper explanation of the hero's thrill-seeking heroics w/MI6. AND, it could have done without the reappearance of the ex husband or the stupid antics...more

After having read 'Penmort Castle', I was all ready to sit down and read a pleasantly entertaining 'Sommersgate House'... but instead of treating myself to a good book, I got a great book! I'm not a fan of classical standard romance, so it shouldn't surprise anybody my rating isn't high. But to be honest, though, my rating truly moves from 1 to 2 stars. I see the author has talent and some of the story is interesting enough. Unfortunately it's literally drown by pointless, boring details.
I can't really say I read SH, as I skipped so many pages. (My very humble opinion is that story would have improved greatly with a much much tighter editing.)

It's really a 4.5, because you know, I gotta REALLY love a KA book to give it 5 stars, but what the heck, why not. This book was ripe with story. Loved the manor, the very minor ghost story (IMO), and I decided I want to move to the real place and live there. I mean, did anyone google the house this was based on? Ya, house is really an understatement. It's a MANOR. with GARDENS. GORGEOUS!

The ghosts of the owners are said to haunt the mansion for eternity until the curse can be broken by the Baron of the house finding and recieving true love. Douglas and his sister, Tamsin, were raised here by there cruel and emotionally and mentally abusive parents. Due to this abuse Douglas has grown into a strong, successful, emotionally stunted man. After a tragic accident kills his beloved sister and her husband, Gavin, Douglas is left to care for three grieving children under the age of twelve. Julia Fairfax is Gavin's sister, and though equally stunned and shattered at the news of her brother's death, quickly gives up her life, job, and friends in America to move to London and share custody of the three children with Douglas as requested by Tamsin and Gavin's will. Both Douglas and Julia have been attracted to the other for the last fifteen years but never found the opportunity to explore it. Now being forced to live night and day with three children that need love and attention will make their sizzling attraction rise to new heights. The novel was superbly written, and although some wrote it was long, that was one of the characteristics I loved the most. Ms. Ashley is a very descriptive writer, and you just can't help but be pulled directly into the story and participate with the other characters. A fantastic read with all K.A.'s normal qualies with the added benefit of a paranormal twist! Totally kick-ass! <3(less)

Kristen Ashley is one of my favorite authors. When I want a good book, I know that I can't go wrong with one hers. This is a very good book, but for some reason, I had trouble keeping up with the names. There seemed to be a lot of characters in this book and sometimes she would use their given names and sometimes their nick names. It kept throwing me off. I would have to stop and think - who the heck is this???

This was another good one by this author. I loved how fun Julia was, even when she was still deep in her grief. She really tried to put it aside for the kids and create a safe happy place for them. I really loved seeing the kids come back to life.

At times I thought this could have been my favorite of the National Trust property books, and at times I wanted to know where the plot was.

So Julia moves to Sommersgate. She moves into a situation that is wrong, wrong, wrong. The children are silent, all their time is structured. They hardly see their uncle or their grandmother who both live with them. When Julia gets there she immediately makes changes to begin to raise the children how she thinks that Gavin would want them raised and Monique (Douglas’s mother) immediately attempts to undermine her changes. Douglas, however, makes it abundantly clear that he supports Julia.

Douglas decides very early on that he wants to make Julia his wife and spends a goodly amount of time trying to convince her of this. Both Douglas and Julia have hurt in their pasts that need healing. 96% of the story revolves around this situation: raising the children and Douglas trying to convince Julia to marry him and Julia going hot and cold. 3% of the story revolves around the ghostly lovers separated for the past 100 years after their brutal murder. The last 1% is the action that comes at the very end. We in fact do not even realize that danger is possible except for Nick the bodyguard. There are no threats, no bombs, no kidnappings, no nasty phone calls…nothing, just poof danger-in-your-face.

I like a little more action throughout and because of this I can’t love this book as some of KA’s other books. I want my hero to save the heroine from multiple dangerous situations.

The second book in this series had a huge threshold to meet after Penmort Castle. Cash was amazing and I was seriously doubtful I would like Douglas as much.

I was wrong. Douglas was awesome and I couldn't help but think of Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice when I was reading. I know, it's hard for anyone to live up to that and he wasn't a replica of course. But Douglas' reserve, his sense of right, his patience and then finally his passion and stubbornness, totally similar to Mr. Darcy!!!

This series isn't my favorite due to the supernatural part of the story but this book in particular had a minimal amount of ghost story. And it seemed like the ghosts weren't mean & nasty and didn't interfere with the story. Douglas is the Lord of Sommersgate and lives there with his nephew and two nieces. I liked this.. although I'm not sure which is better, the first one or this one? hmm..

I'm quite sure that this had a better plot. It's deep and intense. The back story of the ghosts were far better than the first one.. although it's not as scary. I love how the two characters started out. It's not the usual KA story (wam bam love!). It's the build-up-over-time type. This is good since it wasn't predictable.

I enjoyed this story.. KA did an awesome job detailing Sommersgate. I felt like I was experiencing everything along side Julia. Julia and Douglas are now charged with taking care of their nieces and nephew, after the death of their siblings. She has that motherly touch and stubborn to the bone. I had put off reading the paranormal books by Kristen Ashley, but having finished the other series, with nothing of hers left to read, I gave them a go. Oh my gosh! Why was I hesitant? So here's the thing. There were parts of this book that were awesome and parts that were not so awesome. But as I read it, it was clear to me that even in the flagging moments when she lost me, it was still a better read than a lot of the other stuff out there, my opinion of course but then this IS a review so uh, my opinion.

Gah, it is so difficult for me to review some KA books, especially her earlier ones.
I'm obsessed with her characterization and certain elements of her writing, but some plot devices in this one were kind of corny.
Julia, the heroine, nicknamed Jewel (what a great nickname, btw! There's always a nickname with a KA and I particularly loved this one, but strangely I don't think the H, Douglas, ever used it. If he did, it wasn't nearly enough, imo). Anyway, I thought the development of t...more

This story was different from the other KA books I've read in some ways. We didn't get as deep into the thoughts of Douglas or Julia, or maybe they just weren't as quirky and unique as other characters she has created. The sex wasn't as explicit as in her other stories, though she did a good job of maintaining the tension between them.

Another KA hit! I was up to 3 am reading this book last night, I just had to finish!

Julia is appointed guardian to her brother's kids after he and his wife are killed. Part of the request is she has to move to England and live at Sommersgate House. And she has to share guardianship with her brother in law Douglas.

I am sucker for the books that this author writes that have children in them. There characters really bring the books to life for me.
This was a great book in this series, way better than the first. I loved the background story of the cursed couple waiting for a true love to inhabit the house before they could get to each other, rescue each other. Beautiful. The story would keep you on the go sometimes frustrated (on Julia's part)and in times in awe(Douglas) but the rest was simply funny dramatic and sweet. The curse was such a tragic story but thankfully resolved(not going to give it away to much)beautifully. I definitely give it a five star and beyond.

This was my favorite! I wrote 2 entire reviews & they both disappeared!! Anyway... a redo review!

Douglas is my favorite because he is the chaser & wants Julia to marry him. There is a bitch of a mother-in-law that is delt with, so it's great!

There are happy & sad moments & the progression of Julias relationship with Douglas & Douglas' unfolding relationship with their neices & nephew was amazing!

This is a much shorter review, but... oh well. Now I am irritated!
