Elise & Blake . . .

Part of Four Dukes and a Devil

Bones & Cat made a very short appearance - but this novella is focused on Elise & the demon-possessed Blake - with Mancheres playing a bigger role than Cats & Bones.

Blake's dilemma is that he's possessed by demon Xaphan. Elise is determined to save Blake - and needed Mancheres' help in the process . . .

This is a good short read. But I somehow hoped to read more . . .

Overall: 3.5 stars

Of the Night Huntress short stories I have read so far, this is my favorite. It was a complete short story of its own with characters we knew, as well as some new ones. I knew there would be some sort of HEA, and it did not happen the way I was expecting. Knowing what we do of Frost's supernatural world at this point in the series, I had figured on a different ending. (view spoiler)[If you must know, I had expected them to bring Blake back as a ghoul :) (hide spoiler)] Overall, an enjoyable stor...more

This was the book that introduced me to the Night Huntress world. You can tell I liked it very much because I ran off and got hold of 'Halfway to the grave' the very next day. =D

I liked the hero. He was resolute that if he couldn't get rid of the demon riding him then he wanted to make sure he couldn't hurt anyone. He was believably scared when vampires caught up with him, which I liked because alpha heroes who show stupid bravado in the face of something that NEEDS to be feared turn me off. Bla...more

Short but Satisfying!

I delayed reading Four Dukes and a Devil because the only short story I was interested in was Cat and Bones. I'm so glad this novella has been separated from the other stories in that anthology. Cat and Bones are not the focus of this novella, however brief the encounter, it was fantastic to get a touch of them, and it was also a fantastic treat to have Mencheres as well.

It is not necessary to be familiar with the Night Huntress series in order to follow along with this nove...more

Another fun installment in the Night Huntress world. I love Jeaniene Frost’s writing style and her sense of imagination! In this installment our main characters are Elise and Blake, but you still get the cameo appearances of Mencheres, Bones and Cat!

Blake use to be an average guy. He is a divorced man who was a broker leading a normal life, until a demon possessed him. After several times of the demon taking over his body and spilling innocent blood Blake is at the end of his rope…he has decided...more

Blake's life is a living hell, possessed by a demon who has turned Blake into a killer, Blake knows that he must die so that the demon will never hurt anyone again, but with the demon calling the shots it's not going to be easy. When loner vampire Elise witnesses Blake's suicide attempt, the hopelessness of his situation stirs her long lost humanity and as Elise gets to know Blake and is touched by his selflessness, Elise discovers that even though she's immortal by isolating herself to protect...more

This novella is in the anthology Four Dukes and a Devil. Four Dukes and a Devil I'm so glad I included the novellas when I decided to re-read the Night Huntress series. I had forgotten how beautiful this story was. Seeing a vulnerable Mencheres was nice. In the books you know he cares for Bones and would do anything for him but he loves Elise like he would a daughter. I just never saw him as the paternal type. I always thought he was an opportunistic, manipulating prick. Going back and reading these books after read...more

After a traumatic past, Elise, a vampire, has become a virtual recluse, living in abandoned subway tunnels, and avoiding humans and other vampires alike. Her life takes a rather sudden turn for exciting when a demon-posessed man with a death wish turns up on her doorstep.

A fun, quick, read for Frost fans. Cat, Bones, and Mencheres all make appearances in this novella. I'm used to strong, kick-ass heroines from Jeaniene Frost, but Elise isn't. She's suffered a lot in both life and her afterlife,...more

This 86 page short story is a nice read if you're a fan of Jeaniene Frost.
I enjoyed reading about Elise, one of Mencheres's "children".
For those who expect to read about Cat & Bones, I'll have to dissapoint you cause they only appear very briefly in this story.
But even without Cat & Bones as main charachters this was a very nice story and shows once again that Jeaniene Frost is a talented writer.

I liked both characters and felt for both. Everything happened very quickly in feelings but that happens with short stories and this one had a life or death push, which can bring out strong feelings. The story and ending, of getting rid of the demon, was well told and thought out.

Overall, cute short story.

Might be a problem for some-

Very short story... but very good. Blake is processed by a demon and wants to die. The demon takes over his body and kills people to gain strength. When Blake trys to step in front of a train he meets a vampire who needs to connect with the world more.
Elise saves him then she decides to help him.

This novella was short and sweet. While the story was set in the Night Huntress world, its main characters were new.

Elise was a vampire sired by Mencheres, an ancient vampire and co-ruler of Bones' line from the main series. She had been living in isolation for many years before she met Blake, a human possessed and tormented by an evil demon. Despite their short acquaintance, they had an instant connection and Elise was determined to help Blake.

In this story, Cat and Bones made cameo appearances...more

Like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, Frost entertains us lightly with connections to Mencheres, Bones, or Cat. One of Mencheres' children Elise has shut herself off from contact with vamps and humans except for the occasional nip here or there.
She lives a hermit's life in a tunnel with only the necessary outings. Elise meets a human possessed by a demon and begins to care for him.
The only way to rid a human of a demon is to kill him. She asks her sire for help but the demon is ancient and powerfu...more

I'm enjoying these short stories that Jeaniene Frost has put out to expeand her Night Huntress world. In this entry we see the introduction of another supernatural creature not seen before; a demon. I like the idea of Elise, a vampire who strives to protect herself both emotionally and physically by separating herself from society due to the trauma of her life experiences. Blake was an admirable character and a good counterpoint as a man who thought he had everything only to lose it all after hi...more

Love, loved, loved this novella. Jeanine Frost weaves a delicious love story with great character development in such a short format. Cat, Bones, and Menchares are all in the story and add a great touch to the story true to their characters. Elise is a Menchares' "child" and a social outcast making efforts not to isolate herself when she stumbles across Blake. He has been possessed by a terrible strong demon and has been tormented for months finding the carnage he has caused when waking from his...more

This was a nice story set in the Night Huntress world. Elise is a lonely vampire who rarely interacts with anyone, human or otherwise. Blake is a human who has been possessed by an ancient and powerful demon. Blake wants to die so he can end the evil that the demon is doing through him. The catch is that unless his death is handled correctly, the demon will just jump to another human and continue his evil ways. Elise is determined to help Blake, but the more she is around him, the more she cares...more

Elise was a pretty interesting character who could've been developed much more than this tiny novella could do justice. my guess is, if she'd been incorporated into the Night Huntress World series and had a full blown book like Shade and Mencheres did, it'd have been great. And it was nice to see Mencheres from a lens other than Cat's.. but the story was lousy on so many levels.. and i really hate the fact that Bones comes across in many of the NHW series as a far more ruthless character than he...more

I love all of the Night Huntress and Night Huntress World Books. Jeaniene Frost is my hands-down FAVORITE author. The only reason this didn't get 5 stars was because it felt rushed. I know it was a short story, and perhaps it is unfair of me to take away a star because I wanted more....

I think this could have been stretched into a full length book and I would have been very happy. The hero & heroine's romance didn't have the slow build-up I would have liked. But all in all, another great sto...more

Another great novella from Jeaniene Frost. Well written. This story was about Elise and Blake. Blake was possessed by a demon and had nothing else to live for. Until he meets Elise. This was an amazing novella. VERY emotional for me. The despair feelings Blake goes through is so heart wrenching and then when Elise decides to help him, and we go through all her feelings, just made me cry so many times. Additionally, I liked that some of our old favorites returned for this novella. I thoroughly en...more

I have read most of what this author has put forth and love her work. But I found in this short story that she exceeded my expectation. It has a few of the usual characters in the Cat and Bones world, but it is a beautiful stand alone.
A female vampire who is content merely to exist because of tragic past circumstances comes across a human controlled by a demon who seeks to end his life to end the destruction and evil the demon is capable of. The vampire takes an interest that even has her surpri...more

This is just a little short story set in the Night Huntress Universe, although Bones and Cat only make a brief appearance. We learn a little more about Mencheres and some about the history of vampires (Cain as the first vampire, punishment for killing Abel, not completely unheard of in paranormal fiction). The main focus, however is on Elise, one of Mencheres' vampire children and Blake, a man who is demon possessed and wants to die.

It was nice to see other things, besides vampires, in the NH w...more

SHORT & SWEET

While this was a good addition to the Night Huntress series...it wasn't my favorite. I will admit however that this story had me stumped as Elise tries to figure out a way to save Blake, a human who is possessed. Having read most of Frost's Night Huntress books thus far, I kept guessing things wrong as the story progressed. While it is a bit predictable as far as what is going on between Blake and Elise, it is hard to see where things will go in the end.

Very glad of Cat, Bones,...more

Fun, quick short-story from the Night Huntress series. Cat and Bones showed up for a little while, and Mencheres was there as well.
Ms. Frost always writes so well, and this was no different! Elise is a 99 year old vampire, who lives secluded at an abandoned metro station. One day, Blake shows up. He's possessed by a demon, and tries to kill himself in order to be free of the demon. Elise finally starts to feel something again, and decides she wants to try to save him :)

This short features Blake and Elise, two characters we haven't met before. Of course Bones, Cat and Mencheres are in it, with Mencheres playing a fairly significant supporting role. It was a good story, and I know it's a short, but Elise and Blake fell in love and couldn't live without each other in about a day - this is a little rushed, even for PNR. Overall, it was a fun, quick read to tide us over until the next full length release in the Night Huntress universe.

Another really good Frost novella set in the Night Huntress world. I first read this in Four Dukes and a Devil when I was still new to the Night Huntress world (I think I had just finished the first book, maybe the second). Now you can get it as a standalone eBook.

Cat & Bones are barely in this one, but Mencheres plays a big role. The 2 main characters though, the demon-possessed Blake and isolated Elise were fantastic. I really liked this story. Very romantic.

I enjoyed this story because of the relationship twist. This time its a leading female vampire and a male human. Cat and Bones make a good appearance and even though the heroine isn't a ball buster like cat i believe she is strong. solitude is rough, doing it for 50 years even rougher, getting out of your comfort zone of 50 years for a stranger to help them even tougher. JF is always good in my opinion, its more than worth a read.

Devil to Pay is a short story on the periphery of Night Huntress Series. In this story we have Ilise a Vampire meeting Blake a human who has been possessed by a demon. Ilise who has removed herself from society connects with Blake who is determined to kill himself to stop the demon from using his body to do more evil. Bones and Cat make a quick appearance and Mencheres has a larger role.

Nicely crafted tale of two lonely people falling in love. JF again brings her characters to life and her plot...more

“It’ll be easier if you take your clothes off…most of them, at least.”

She looked almost shy saying that, as if he’d take her suggestion as perverted voyeurism. Blake’s heart squeezed. I’ll miss you forever, he thought, staring into Elise’s beautiful blue-green eyes.

it's a heart werenching short story... in wich I love Bones but Blake steals my heart!
