Three Generations

As a boy back in the late 60's, I remember my grandfather reading from this book, particularly Little Orphant Annie.
When our daughter, Annie, said she had chosen Riley for her son's middle name, this is the first thing I thought of. Just after he was born I read the first poem to him. We've read here and there, once in a while ever since, and now we've competed the last -- a little over eight months later.

James Whitcomb Riley was born on October 7, 1849, in Greenfield, Indiana, to local attorney Reuben A. Riley and his wife, Elizabeth (Marine) Riley, in a small cabin. His parents named him after James Whitcomb, the governor of Indiana. Riley was influenced by many of the visitors to his father's home.
