I grew up loving the dragonball z anime that was always on cartoon network. I didn't have cable until recently, so whenever I was over a friends house or my grandparent's, I would watch this show. I'm even in a van whose name is a direct reference to it! So reading the actual graphic novel was a geeky treat to say the least. Centering on the life of the super saiyajin monkey man Goku, this fun action adventure is full of fighting and giant explosions. While the series can become a bit formulaic...more
It's hard to review stuff like this without your nostalgia goggles on, but I still think that this volume was pretty great. It has all the characters we know and love from Dragon Ball, but now they are five years older. I think this was a wise decision on Toriyama's part. You get the sense of familarity from the returning cast, but the passage of time gives a nice change of pace. Progression is something that some stories have trouble with: characters and plots remain static and can get boring....more

I loved this so much. Though I had already seen the series on TV multiple times, it was still a page turner. If you want to start watching/reading Dragonball Z, it's probably a good idea to start at the very beginning.. I liked how the book introduced each character and kind of explained what or who they were in the first few pages. This is my first time reading a manga in a really long time, so I wasn't used to the reading style. But if you're looking to sort of "train" yourself, then this seri...more

I was a fan before it was cool!. Story of Son Goku, a Sayain(or however you spell it) who was sent to earth to take it over..they have tails like monkey's and have wicked powers and are super strong.
e was a baby at the time. With loss of memory he was adopted raised to be good then go on magical and fantastic adventures revolving around the 7 Dragonballs. It's a good starter manga for those getting into it. It's one of the most beloved stories out there. Often imitated never duplicated. 1989–199...more

Goku is married and has a small kid who he trains every day no matter what place or what time it is but when his child suffers he takes the responsiblity to be a father of a normal child. Goku is terrified when he gets to know something terrible from his master that someone like him will come to Earth to rule it and has the same powers as him. He also has a alein enemy that he fights with but only for when they know that he will be his friend one day.
The beginning of this is more emotional than the ending of the last arc (in Dragon Ball Vol 16), and there are hints of a few promising twists -- power connected to feelings? -- but I am clearly continuing only out of habit. The new plot direction thus far seems like an excuse for Toriyama to draw more spaceships, something at which he obviously excels.

This and dragon ball were the perfect manga series, I have never in my life, enjoyed a manga series more than this. This series in fact is what got me interested in the genre. Goku was always a favorite hero, he ALWAYS did what was right. And Piccolo was my favorite character overall, he cared so much and made one of the biggest villian turn-arounds I've ever seen.
Pretty interesting where a girl named Bulma fined the main character named Goku. She sees that Goku was a different, very strong. So She finds a Dragon ball in Goku's little home She asks him to join her to find the 7-magical balls called the dragon balls. If you collect all 7 balls The Great dragon grants your wish.

I think that was ok but it made goku look weaker than he did at the end of the dragon ball series, but its good because it kinda reflects the dragon ball series and how goku started out as one of the weak characters to start with and slowly started to become the strongest and this book is the start.
Dragon Ball is an absolute classic and a thoroughly enjoyable read. The manga itself has some of the most charming and witty dialogue, Goku and the others are absolutely hilarious. This is definitely a must read for any manga or anime fan who, upon some reason, has yet to read it.

This book was a graphic novel, so it was really short. It was a little confusing because the action would change really fast, and it was kind of annoying. But I otherwise liked this book. I only read it because I watch the show and think that anime is kind of cool.

this book helps people get the best super heros that can fly use powers goku was a boy that came from the sayin planet with his brother raditz and enemy vegeta goku is a young but strong little baby he was also a smart the end
I prefer watching this anime to reading it, I know that's a crime, but in my defense I was much younger and I was only just discovering manga. I did manga to find a copy and give it a read and liked it well enough.

This series is one of the best action manga you could possibly read. Dragon Ball Z may be known being for kid-friendly, but the content leaves so much to be desired. Also Toriyama's art is cool.

私は大きいな「Dragon Ball Z」のファンです。ぜひ、DBZの一本単行本はいいです。悪いポイント?英訳は上手じゃありません。。。
I'm a big fan of Dragon Ball Z. Of course, the first volume of DBZ is good. The bad point? The English translation wasn't good...
I know I'm late to the game on this one, but Rafi is really into Dragon Ball at the moment, so we're working our way through the manga. I'm not going to list them all here, though!

Akira Toriyama is a widely known and acclaimed Japanese manga artist known mostly for his creation of Dragon Ball in 1984. It is difficult to pin point the source of Toriyama's artwork inspiration. He admires Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy and was impressed by Walt Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which he remembers for the great art. Jackie Chan's early movies had a noticeable influence on Tori...more
