Love, Honour and O’Brien is an interesting mystery featuring Holly Love. Holly has quit her job, blown her money on a new dress for her wedding to Andrew McNish. Unfortunately for Holly, Andrew has done a bunk leaving her with nothing but the money in her purse and some nasty looking thugs who want to find Andrew. Holly hires a seedy PI named O’Brien to find Andrew and decides to go to his office when she hasn’t heard from him. She finds him deader than a doornail and also finds some clues to An...more

I do like a bit of a romp novel, and LOVE HONOUR AND O'BRIEN is nothing if not a bit of a romp. Which surprised me a bit - because the blurb sounded just a little dauntingly like it might be too chick-lit for me. But Jennifer Rowe's return to mystery writing has hugely exciting, so exciting I picked up this book as soon as it arrived.

Set in the Blue Mountains (Rowe's home territory it seems), LOVE HONOUR AND O'BRIEN is, you'd have to hope, the first outing of accidental Private Detective Holly L...more

Looking back over my recent chick-lit reviews, there seems to be a direct correlation between the presence of a mystery in its pages and the number of stars I end up awarding it. The airy chic-lit seems to pair so perfectly with a the quirky cozy mystery, so much so that one suspects there’s a hint of fraternal twinship going on. This is the first of Jennifer Rowe’s books I’ve read since her pseudonymous Rowan of Rin days (oh, Emily Rodda, you were the delight of silent reading time in Grade 3),...more

With Love, Honour and O'Brien, Jennifer Rowe begins a new cozy mystery series featuring accidental private investigator, Holly Love. It has been about fifteen years since Jennifer Rowe last released a mystery novel. The Verity Birdwood series is a six book series, the Tessa Vance series had only two but sparked an Australian television series. Between then and now Rowe has concentrated on publishing as Emily Rodda - responsible for several popular children's fantasy series.

Set in the Blue Mount...more

Every now and again, I find myself in need of humor in my reading and I’m not especially picky about where I get it but I do appreciate it when it comes in one of my favorite genres. I like it even more when I feel as though I’ve “discovered” something cool and that’s the case with Jennifer Rowe.

Back in my bookstore-owning days, one of our most popular middle-grade authors was Emily Rodda. She was also a favorite because she was Australian, a label that for some reason intrigues us Americans.

I really enjoyed this quirky Australian set mystery novel about accidental private investigator Holly Love. The story starts off with Holly preparing for her wedding day to a man she only known a short period of time. She has foolishly put all of her saving into a joint account with him...you can start to see the writing on the wall here! But the story takes some interesting twists and turns as Holly inadvertently takes over the dead O'Brien's detective agency.

This book is full of fascinating a...more

I like all kinds of mysteries so, when I was looking for a new one, I thought the publisher’s promo for Love, Honour, and O’Brien by Jennifer Rowe sounded entertaining. I knew nothing about Australian author Jennifer Rowe or her mystery novels, including that she’s an award-winning author. Go figure – where have I been? If you like unconventional, humorous mysteries featuring reluctant female heroines then hopefully you’ll get as much of a kick out of this one as I did. Read the rest of my revie...more

Flat broke after her fiance disappears with her money, Holly Love hires a detective to search for him. But when the detective stops answering his phone, Holly looks for him and ends up in the little village of Mealey Marshes. She finds O'Brien, and a number of other things that she hadn't expected, including the possibility of a new life in this delightful import. It's a long time since I've seen a book by Jennifer Rowe, and it's a pleasure to have her back.

Ho-hum. I couldn't wait for the book to be over so I could be done w/it. Not b/c the story, writing or characters were terrible, but b/c it seemed like the author was trying very hard to convince the reader that the story was as charming & funny as she believed it was in her head. It was like being trapped in the awkward silence that forces a storyteller to say, "I guess you had to be there." Clearly, I wasn't there...it was simply tedious.

It's been a long time since I've read a book by Jennifer Rowe. This book was interesting but I'm not sure it lives up to the Tessa Vance or Verity Birdwood mysteries. It was very slow to start and if it were written by anyone else I don't think I would have kept reading, but because it took me back to my teenage years of reading Teen Power Inc I couldn't help but keep reading. It was also nice to read a book which had references to places in Sydney and contained Australian slang.

Aside from that...more

I downloaded this book after a friend, who lives is the Blue Mountains attended an author talk by Jennifer Rowe. It's a great crime novel peopled by the kind of quirky characters you'd expect to find up in the mountains, my friend excepted.

New author for me not totally crazy about it but it was entertaining. I think for me the writing was fairly dijointed and that is what bothered me. The story and premise was good but the writing prevented me from giving it more stars.

This was simply a fun read. Well-written, entertaining, and well-plotted, if not especially believable, and the heroine was likable and not too embarrassing. The author also writes children's books under the pseudonym Emily Rodda.

what a fun read! I'm so glad Poisoned Pen Press are publishing Aussie as well as British authors. I'm going to look for more. Love the language and the characters in this one.

Perhaps a bit slow to get going but once I was into it I couldn't put it down. A fun mix of humour and mystery with some good twists and great characters. I really enjoyed it.

A fun quick summer read with the bonus of a mystery. It kept me laughing and guessing the whole time.
Book Bazaar
I only picked this book up because the author writes teen fiction under a pseudonym and I have really enjoyed them. It was a good decision as, on face value, I wouldn't normally have chosen this and it really was a fun read. A cross between detective fiction and chick lit is probably the best description. Fun, light and a mystery to be solved.
Liz
Nice and quirky. Lovely to have a detective story set in the blue mountains, in NSW. Hope this is the first of a series.
