The first chapter of this book reads like a terrible gender studies MA thesis. Lawler begins with a strong introduction, but does not follow it up very well. The book improves, however, and is an interesting overview of women in contact sports as well as the resulting issues of feminism that arise. However, the book never really loses its gender studies thesis feel, especially how Lawler never actually introduces us to any of the women she has interviewed, but insists on stating throughout the b ...more
