I was excited to get this for review! The cover isn't as beautiful as the other debuts, but the story sure is good. The main character in this story, Nikki, is supposedly a kick-ass girl who has a black belt in karate and rides a motorcycle. She is leading a "normal" until until suddenly, everywhere she turns, she is being attacked by evil creatures and she doesn't know why.

I did not finish this book, however, since I read half of it, I am going to give my thoughts on that half and explain why I chose not to finish.

I thought the premise sounded really interesting. I’ve never read an angel book and was looking forward to seeing how that story line was played out. Also, the summary promised some swoon-worthy lovin’ and I’m always up for that.

The first thing that caught my attention about Halflings was the beautiful, visual writing. It reminded me of The Mortal Instrument series but more religious since it talked about heaven, hell and God (but not in a preachy way). When I was approved to read and review this book through NetGalley I was more than excited. First off, the cover is just like pure beauty is it not? I have a thing for the color red I think. Secondly the blurb caught my attention right away. I love the whole angel theme, and this was a great little twist from other angel books out there. This book wasted no time catching your attention and hurling you into all the action. From page one it was like Heather Burch is telling you hold on to your seat, this is going to be one insane ride and it really is. From the characters whom you grow extremely attached to the insane plot that is driving the story, there is no time to calm down and gather yourself. You have to keep pushing through so you can understand it all, and quench the thirst the book leaves you with. Because trust me, this book leaves you hanging in so many ways.

One thing that I didn't enjoy with this book was after the incredible first two chapters you have so much information thrown at you and then loose site of where the book is going. I was sort of in and out of this book for the first half. I knew a great story was there, I felt it in my bones, but I was just coming up short. It was page 179 that started really hitting it off with me. After you get to a certain point it starts to slow down and you finally see the world of this book come together. Once I hit it that groove I could NOT put this book down. I loved the characters even more than before and started to put together the puzzle pieces I had gotten earlier. This is no easy puzzle to put together though folks, the Halflings world is a crazy piece of literary genius.

Like any great YA book nowadays there was one hell of a love triangle. You have the bad boy Raven and the good hearted Mace. Now I loved them both, I really did, but I definitely had my favorite. [*cough* Raven *cough*] The thing with this love triangle is that no matter who she chooses, she could never be with either one. It put a huge damper on my heart when certain things happened and left me clinching my chest for the boys I had grown to love. Nikki was seriously a breath of fresh air in this book. She was strong, knew how to hold her own, and didn't let others get to her. She was far from heartless though, and the depth of her emotions is what really endeared her to me. I wanted the book to never end, I needed to know what happened to her and her fight to figure out what was going on around her.

The ending half of this book was my favorite, like I said, I honestly could not put it down. I was so attached to everyone at this point that I didn't want to let them go. As I kept flipping the last few pages I kept hoping the page numbers would somehow double because the ending in this book is killer. KILLER I tell you! I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there but be ready to pre-order the second book in this series, because you will HAVE to. After the last page I sat stunned in my chair for a good 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it just ended that way, no doubt Heather Burch knows how to keep her readers hooked. So, if you are asthmatic [like me] make sure to keep your rescue inhaler close because this book is going to take your breath away. This was definitely a great debut book and I will be keeping an eye out for the second to this dazzling series.

The love triangle in this story is pretty good. Raven is the bad boy in the story. He was presented as the one having a darker side. I would just like to say when people I know read books and tell me there is a MASSIVE! Love triangle in the book I normally choose to stay clear but this book was very different. The love triangle in this book was deep and emotional. Raven and Mace are two very different characters at first look I thought of mace as light and caring one and Raven as dark and sexy but there is a whole lot more to these two characters and the book was so much more than just love drama. It’s about family and making the right chooses and the evil that's inside us all it’s our choice to be good or bad and this book really did show that.

Nikki was a really good character. She is a fighter, deep down, and she faces what’s coming head on. As one of the main characters she was feisty and kind and enjoyable to read about. I also felt that there is a lot more we are going to learn about her as the series goes on. I just had a sense that there is a lot of hidden power or potential inside Nikki that’s begging to come out. The story was packed with danger, and Nikki went from a normal life to being on the supernatural hit list. There were a lot of intense moments in the book between characters and sometimes humour the book seemed to find a great mix of everything.

Now I would like to confess that as an avid reader you sometimes fall for the characters you're reading about and raven was one of those characters for me. While at first look you feel his just an arrogant pretty boy, but I felt there more to him, and I feel that over readers will spot that underneath his front, you will see someone different.

A wonderful written story Jam packed with forbidden love, danger and a burning evil that will suck you in.

Nikki is a seventeen-year-old kick-butt martial artist, Kawasaki motorcycle riding girl, but she’s never broken the rules. Its going take more than the good-looking football quarterback to get Nikki's heart swooning over a guy. Mace is the good guy hero type that never breaks the rules. Raven is the bad-boy who always breaks the rules, and Vine is the newbie who's just looking for his next candy fixes.

Nikki, who's never had any of those girly swoon love problems, has met her match with Mace. Nikki, the girl who couldn't fall in love, has just fallen for both Mace and Raven, but now she will know the power and the pain of love's heart-break for the two guys she loves but will never have.

Halflings is a totally different triangle love romance. One I have been waiting for a long time and I’m so glad Heather Burch has written Nikki, Mace, and Raven’s intriguing romance with a fantastic strong storyline with action, drama, humor and heart-break. Burch has given her main character Nikki a strong personality that I truly admire when facing life's most hurtful choices, Nikki's character shows she can make responsible choices while her whole life is being taken away from her as you will see in this heart-breaking cliffhanger. I highly recommend Halflings as a must read.

Halflings. Half human... half angel.

That's all I needed to know!
It starts off quick with lots of action and you instantly get sucked right in, running through the forest and trying to catch your breath while trying to figure out what is going on, right along with Nikki Youngblood.
Nikki was definitely not who I expected her to be! From the synopsis, I got the impression of 'damsel in distress', but she is quite the opposite - this girl is super smart, gutsy, stubborn and forthright.

Halflings is an interesting take on angels and fallen angels, although I admit I haven't read much literature dealing with this subject matter. But, I did feel that a few of the characters held my interest. Nikki is at least not a typical teenage protagonist of the YA paranormal genre. She rides motorcycles and knows karate, but still lives a fairly normal life in Missouri.

She meets three teenage boys called Halflings, which means they are half human and half fallen angel. The attractive boys, Mace, Raven and Vine, go around and pretend to be brothers, but they were all born to different Halfling parents and had to be raised away from them for their own protection. A Guardian Angel named Will, a fully fledged angel, is their caretaker. Together, they spend their lives helping out humans in need and discover pieces of their missions through Will, who seems to be able to receive divine revelation.

Nikki and Mace are instantly drawn to each other, and experience “insta-love,” which I frown upon, but it doesn't necessarily ruin the story. Although, Nikki also finds herself intrigued by Raven, who is partial to his fallen angel side, as he has a delicious bad-boy streak. I was really interested in him at first, all snarky and wanting only human minions, but he cooled off toward the end as he became more interested in Nikki. Ah, so close. Almost had a really sexy anti-hero—nearly anti-villain. Still, he's a great character.

What's so shocking is that, low and behold, a true villain materializes in a character that really doesn't appear in the story much, in the form of an attractive older man that Nikki is constantly being thrust at. He has a weird connection to her parents, and even they are quite the mystery in and of themselves. I really found this villain character intriguing, but the story suddenly ends before I can discover what his deal is, and why he is so interested in having Nikki all to himself. Why is he so rich, and what connection does he have to the plot to destroy the world?

At the very end, Nikki suddenly feels wrong about being with him before he gets his clutches on her, so she runs back to the Halflings, and then it's all over. Most abrupt ending ever. I'd be far happier if the reason WHY this guy is so dangerous had been revealed, so that her running to the Halflings would make sense to me. Sure, the Halflings are like her guardian angels, but I really want to know why this mysterious guy she barely knows is so dangerous. Hopefully, it will get explained in the next book.

My score: 3.5 out of 5 stars. (I like it.)

First Impressions: This book sounded very appealing to me. I like books about angels, with twists of angels, and basically everything, well, angels. And with a girl who could potentially doom the angels or halflings, whatever you want to call them, to hell, is sure to be interesting. I got nice and cozy on my favorite designated reading chair and prepared for an afternoon snuggled up with this book.

First 50 Pages: I loved the first few chapters of Halflings! It immediately had me hooked into the story for a few different reasons. First, the fast pace. A lot of information and introduction of characters takes place almost right away, and I really liked that it didn’t have a slow start. Secondly, it wasn’t confusing which is a major plus for me. I didn’t feel like I had to go back and re-read pages in order to understand what is going on, which is something that really bugs me about most fantasy themed books.

Characters & Plot: Nicole, or Nikki, Youngblood is our main female protagonist who begins the story by being chased by a pack of wolves. Meanwhile, Raven, Mace, Vine, and Will are scoping out the scene trying to figure out how exactly they are going to safe her from being eaten. It is their job as halfings to protect her, even though they don’t really know why they need to protect her. Nikki is special because she is a human and they have never protected a human before. All of this makes more sense as the story progresses.

This entire time I kept wondering what the heck are Halflings exactly? I never heard of them before and I just kind of assumed they were Angels. Well, they kind of are, but not really. They aren’t really angels and they aren’t human; they are something in-between. Halflings were created by Hitler which caused the Holocaust to occur. Say what? I was so tempted to just put this book right back on my bookshelf and never touch it again after all of that was explained. The story behind the Halflings creation is just too far out there for me and it seemed very silly and not well developed. Oh well, I pressed through this small annoyance and kept reading.

There were quite a few things that I really liked about this book. The love triangle was very interesting, I liked Nikki in general, and I felt that the plot was pretty unique and it held my interest. But with the good, comes the not so good, and I was a little disappointed with this book, maybe because I just expected it to be better than I thought it was.

As I dug deeper into the story, I found a few things that really bothered me and even a few times I had to chuckle and roll my eyes. Some parts were just so corny, such as:

Stands of hair pressed against her head where her helmet held them in place, trapped like butterflies under glass.

Sigh. What a metaphor. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like metaphors. A few metaphors dashed in here and there in a story can do wonders. This book is littered with metaphors. It was overdone and it made the writing seem kind of…cheap, I guess is the best way to put it. There are better ways of evoking imagery without the use of so many metaphors. Just my personal opinion.

Final Thoughts: This was an okay book. The ending was anti-climactic and not very much was resolved. I still have a ton of unanswered questions, but I’m not entirely sure that I will be going out of my way to pick up the next book in the series when it is released. I do think that people who enjoy stories about angels might want to check into Halflings more and not just take my word for it. I’m sure that some people will really like it, which I did at first, but it just didn’t hold my interest. (less)

First, Nikki was an amazing female character. I love to see someone who can run with the boys and kick some butt. Nikki is smart, determined, and fierce! She does well tackling the things that come her way, until it's more than teenage drama she is forced to deal with. For reasons unknown to her, evil creatures want her dead. But she isn't alone in the fight. She has 3 fabulous halflings helping her with the battle. 3 fabulous ...hot, male...halflings! I mean really, who wouldn't want them as bodyguards??

Mace, Raven, and Vine have missions to protect people and now that person is Nikki. She is thrown into their world and she immediately knows they are not normal guys. Mace saves her from an accident on her motorcycle, and while he tries to convince her that nothing strange happens, Nikki isn't buying it. After a while she learns what the guys really are.

Mace is the good-guy. He is strong but he follows along with the rules and tries to do what is right. He is the first to share a deep connection with Nikki. But something, or someone, throws a wrench into his plans. Raven is pretty much the total opposite of Mace. He is stubborn and has a bad attitude. He never wants to do what he is told and for some reason, Nikki loves that. But then again, he's totally hot, so I understand :) But now Nikki has a nice love triangle on her hands.

I know some people hate love triangles but I am not one of them. It's difficult to make a love triangle realistic and genuine but Heather Burch did a fantastic job at this! I really believed the connections Nikki had with Mace and Raven. Nothing seemed forced and the chemistry was there. Loved it!

I don't want to forget mentioning Vine too because he was just adorable. He's the newbie, and usually the one who tries to keep the peace between Mace and Raven. I really liked his character a lot.

The plot of Halflings was incredibly gripping. It was unique and full of action, twists, and turns that I never expected. There were so many pulse-pounding moments that had me on the edge of my seat.

Heather Burch beautifully crafted this story and everything about it drew me in. I couldn't stop reading and I'm anxiously awaiting book 2!

Highly recommended read!

Review:
Halflings by Heather Burch jumps right into the action of the story. Our heroine Nicki is being chased through the forest by Hell Hounds and after putting up a decent fight she is losing. Then in swoops our hunky hero’s Raven, Mace, and Vine who are halflings men who are half angel, half man. And the action does not let up until the book is finished!
The downside to this book is while there is a ton of action I didn’t really feel like anything happened. It is clear this book will be the first in the series and that its purpose was to get to know the characters. While there was a ton of things going on nothing furthered the big storyline about what was going on with Omega Corporation. That really bummed me out!
Halflings also has a love triangle that I wasn’t thrilled with. For most of the book I didn’t even really think it was a love triangle! I thought that Nicki had no interest in Raven, it wasn’t until the end of the book that she really admitted to having any feelings for him. To me it was obvious she wanted to be with Mace, but knew it would was not worth the cost. Overall I really didn’t like the “love” in this book, I wasn’t particularly interested in either of the guys and when I finally started liking someone it never went anywhere.
I was intrigued by all of the supporting characters in this book and that made up for the love triangle mess. Will, the Angel who takes care of the Halflings, was a nice father figure. I also really liked the relationship Nicki has with her parents, all too often in YA the heroines are from unhappy homes. It was nice to see a heroine who got along with her folks and had a semi trusting relationship with them. I also despite my better instinct liked the maybe “bad” guy Damon Vessler he was smooth, rich, and I could not figure out his motives which made me even more interested! I was really disappointed though when half way through the book Nicki’s “Best Friend” totally dropped off the radar and wasn’t brought up again, it felt like suddenly Nicki’s world revolved around the Halflings and she forgot school and bestie. I hope that Burch does a better job of incorporating her friend into the storyline in the sequel.
The storyline was very original and the writing was nice, albeit a little jumpy at times. In all honesty I did enjoy Halflings and will probably pick up the sequel but there were too many problems for me to give it any more then 3 stars. I look forward to seeing where Heather Burch goes with the sequel and what happens with Omega Corp and the Halflings!

To begin with, I received this ARC book from Zondervan publishing Z Street. It is geared towards teens, and yet, I still found myself (with that in mind) wanting to gag! It seems all Nikki is capable of doing for the first 2/3 of the book (even though she is supposedly tough, a fighter) is "drown in those Mediterranean blue green eyes and faint. And if I ever hear again the phrase, sucking in her exhaled breathe that tasted of life, or any other way it is overly explained and used I will SCREAM!...more

Okay. This Book was so bad. It just was. I mean, starts out real great.... And then page 20 or so comes along. Okay, so the main character is Nikki. Human. Three babe half angels come to protect her. I think we all see the love triangle coming. Lets be honest.

I mean the whole time I'm just sitting here like, What! Why does Mace get the girl?! Are you kidding me? Isn't it obvious Raven is better for her, and she for him? Am I the only one thinking this? Seriously!

It was a real disapontment when I read this book truly. I thought it was going to be fun and exciting about reading a book about people who are half humans and half angels. I had it on my kindle for months and kind of swore off angel books once I finished Indebted (The Premonition Series #3) because reading about other angels felt like I was cheating on Russell and Reed? It’s been a long time since I got so caught up in a book that I stayed up to some ungodly hour of a school night to read a book for fun. But Halflings by Heather Burch forced me to.

Nikki wasn’t like other girls. She rode a motorcycle, had a black belt in karate, had a deep love for art, and didn’t wear the best clothes. But when she’s inexplicably targeted by the evil powers that be, she needs protection, which comes in the form of three strange boys: Mace, Raven, and Vine. They are Halflings and there is only one thing that they are forbidden to do: fall in love with a human. So one or more (I’m not gonna give it away, geez) of the boys must battle his/their foe(s), as well as the battle raging inside of him/them. Will Nikki be crushed before they find the reason why the bad guys want her? Or will she defeat the barrage of evils coming her way and survive through it all?

All right, it’s been a while since I did a review, so forgive me if I’m a bit rusty. Overall, I liked Nikki. I thought that she was pretty strong and tough most of the time. I mean, no one can be strong all the time, right? She actually had substance so there was a real personality for the boy(s) to love, so that actually made sense. Let me just say now that I loved all three of the boys right away. They were awesome. Mace was the sweet one, Raven was the… dark?... one, and Vine was the baby one. Seriously, he was adorable, like a little kid. They all had definite and different personalities, which I really enjoyed. Each one was unique.

Now for the writing/story line part! She used a lot of similes and metaphors and such in her writing and I really liked them. Some were really clever, and I love me some poetry, so that was enjoyable. And the story line was AMAZING. Something about it made me want to devour the whole story all in one sitting. I got pulled into the book almost instantaneously and stayed sucked in (Unfortunately, in the middle of reading this I had to do a project for school and stop reading- I was so upset).

This book was definitely a fun read and I am so excited to read the next one. Which I get to do ahead of time because I am part of Heather Burch’s book tour for the next book, Guardian, which comes out on October 9, 2012! So look forward to yet another book tour, which should probably be happening sometime in the next two or three weeks! Ta-ta for now!

I am so confused by this book. From the very beginning I could barely follow it. For all the characters, we are told one thing about them, and see them act in ways that totally contradict what we've been told. They are all trying so badly to fit into stereotypes it hurts.

Nikki has potential to be a great protagonist; self sufficient, strong, brave. We are told she is all these things. And yet - she spends so much time crying and fainting that you get whiplash.

Really enjoyed this book. I'm always drawn to stories that have spiritual warfare in them, specifically angels vs demons. In this particular book, Halflings are half human and half angel drawn from Genesis chapter 6.
