What a beautiful and inspiring lovestory! I am coming to really admire Richard Bach's stories. I think in order to really reap the rewards within the pages, it is helpful to be in a similar phase of life, i.e., to be yourself on a spiritual journey seeking the many wonders of lifes mysteries (with as open a mind as you can muster!).

A good literary piece is one which reflects different ideological strands without affecting the central or dominant voice of the 'author'. Richard Bach's theme in the novel 'Bridge' is his search for 'soulmate' and his concept of love, and also how he find out his true soul mate. However, this idea is one among the many ideas he discussed in the work; at the same time, the idea of 'love' dominates in the work.

You can find different voices in this text; Bach who is against the institution of marriage; against the institutionalized church; against govts' intervention of individual freedom; and so on and on. Contrary to this, he a married man, he is searching for spiritual harmony, he is conservative supporter of the governmental system.

The concept of soulmate, according to Bach, is “perfect woman among many”; you cannot find a single perfect woman, but can find perfection among many. He went afer many woman and enjoyed the lifestyle. The pilot, Bach, visited several places and found new and new women everywhere . The idea does not mean he is a licentiousness, instead he believed in the superiority of the human self, and does not want to be the slave of any system. He searched for the perfection of his own self.

Bach believed in a particular religious philosophy in which an individual attains perfection by himself. He can converse with the spirits and can foresee the things. The power of the human soul is above any powers in the world.

The concepts of love and music and everything he possesses is in contrast with Leslie, his real soulmate. Love means understanding each others freedom and unique identity, she thought. The life is full of learning, they learned from each other, progressed the life with mutual trust and love.(less)

This is so far the most beautiful love story that I've ever read! I liked the storytelling and the heartfelt words nicely written. The plot is not corny as say Spark's A Walk to Remember or Segal's Love Story. Love here is depicted by the long and ethereal flights taken by the lovers. I read this book again to see if it still hit as hard as it did when I discovered it in college amid the long distance angst of having met my future husband...and the lines and writing still sounded as strong as they did then and still amazes me how some books find you when you need to find them...the odds of coming across this book at that time were so very small yet there it was echoing what I felt I was living...now I am not sure it reads as well as then. Though it has "love story" in the title, this is less of a "romance" and more of a mental and emotional journey for the lead character/narrator "Richard." What a terribly sh!tty book. My first 0-star rating. I don't understand how anyone can give this book any stars. It honestly lessens my opinion of them as human beings. Are they thirteen years old? Have they not actually lived lives themselves, with all its depth and nuances and complications?

Lasot tālāk citas viņa grāmatas, sapratu, ka pavisam nejauši esmu izdarījusi pareizo izvēli, jo lasot grāmatu liekas, ka iepazīstos ar Bahu personiski, kā ar reālu personu, izdzīvoju līdzi viņa priekiem un bēdām. Tā pat arī ar Lesliju. Visā grāmatas garumā autors ir ļoti labi radījis priekšstatu par sevi. Viņa iepazīšana ļauj labāk izprast vēstījumus un pamācības, ko sniedz arī citas viņa grāmatas.
Šī grāmata, manuprāt, ir loti rontiska un arī reālisma netrūkst. Lasot šo grāmatu manī bija daudz dažādas emocijas. Brīžiem nevarēju atturēties no skaļiem smiekliem, brīžiem mīlestības pārdzīvojumi neļāva neraudāt, jutu līdzi gan Leslijai, gan Ričardam, dažuviet gribēju Bahu iekaustīt vai pateikt kādu sarbu vārdu. Bet kādubrīd, likās, ka raksta par mani.
Ričards Bahs ir akstnieks,kurš lasītājam liek pacelties debesīs un ļauj lidot kopā ar viņu. Bahs raksta viegli un ātri lasāmā saistošā valodā. Šī ir viena no tām grāmatām, no kuras nevar ne atrauties, Manuprāt, šis darbs ir jāilasa ikvienam, kurš vēlas redzēt Baha skatu uz dzīvi, pasauli un kosmosu, ikvienam kurš tic, ka kaut kur ir viņa īstā dvēseles radiniece, ikvienam, kurš tic, ka īstā dzīve nav tā, kas aprobežojas ar primitīvo saprātu. This is where i got hooked - the point where the story reflects the many insecurities and uncertainties we face when we finally get what we've wished for all our lives.
That's what this book is about, learning to embrace love, learning and growing together, making place for two in our view of life.

So, most of the narrative is Richard Bach dealing with multiple dilemmas regarding Leslie and himself, casual conversations they have and snippets of some of the activities they shared.To me, this is more of a real love story than any of those wild wild romances.
An account of how love seeps into our pores day-after-day through words, looks, thoughts and actions, until it becomes our flesh and bones.

What the world would have readily lapped up if it were presented as fiction draws ridicule due to its autobiographical nature. For some of us who dont chose to buy the claims of them sharing a subconscious connection will still have enough to remain tethered to the pages.
What I loved most was the sincerity I detected here.
As mentioned in the foreward,

'I've taken a few liberties with chronology..most of the names are fictitious. The rest I couldn't have invented had I tried; the truth wasn't plausible enough to have been fiction.'

Maybe it's much too sweet, much too magical, follows too much of a pattern for reality. Toss this book into the crowd and you'd have split the world into those who do and don't acknowledge the power of love. I'll let Bach say it himself-

"[I]could be wrong, but when we listen to somebody's answers , we're not really listening to the somebody, are we? We're listening to ourselves while they talk; it's ourself says this part's true and that part's crazy and that part's true again. That's the fun of listening. The fun of saying is to be as little wrong as we know how to be."

Interesting book. Certainly some things I don't personally subscribe to, but nonetheless it is beatiful and well-written and laden with truth and opportunities for self-reflection. Some of my favorites follow:

This exquisite metaphysical love story based on the author's relationship with his wife, and soulmate, Leslie Parish is one of my favorite reads. It is told in a mystical style that explains multi-dimensional soul aspects interacting across time.

This is a strange review, but it's written looking back at my former self with fondness.

I can't bring myself to re-read this book through adult eyes. I don't know how old I was when I read it, but I doubt I was even 15, and I'm fairly confident that I wasn't younger than 12. Uh....what should I say about this book? The author has an intelligent style of writing, and the way things are depicted in it is just awesome. It taught me a lot about love, it showed me that love doesn't have to bring happiness to you every day of your life. Soulmates don't have to think alike, and it's all about seeing the dark side of each other and still wanting to be with each other.

Pure platitudinous puke. One of the worst books I've actually kept reading until I finished (although I honestly don't know how I did it). This book really wasn't for me. It was a task to make myself pick it up and read. I found the writing construed and self absorbed. If Richard truly believes in soul-mates and forever and that this woman was the one then why is he no longer with her? Also why is there no mention of his children from his previous marriage? Me? Read a love story?

Very out of character for me, but I have always loved this book. I think mostly because it's about real love. Not fairy tale bulls*^t, but terrifying - "I'm exposing myself to you, do not crush me, please" love.

The kind you try to sabatoge even though it's wonderful.

Read it even if you don't like love stories - if nothing else you get to be a voyeur to a facinating love relationship between 2 adults, that isn't mushy or cheesy.

Beautiful, heart-warming, funny, entertaining. My own love of flying draws me to books written by aviators, and Richard Bach's books are all full of the joys of flight. To couple that with a beautiful love story and Bach's deep reflections on life quality results in a stimulating and enjoyable read. Add to all that Bach's ability to laugh at himself, and you're left with a warm personal feel-good book that is hard to put down.
