So at about 1am, I was really sleepy but my head is buzzing with the murder-mystery ravaging the Ragged Cove much like the classic Sherlock Holmes movie. Fast forward to 1:30am and my eyes are really ggetting sleepy and just when I though I could finally put a bookmark on the page and drift to sleep, O'Rourke would pull another number on me and would jolt me to wakefulness more effective than coffee.

The book was dark and mysterious and a fantastic read. Tim O’Rourke’s version of “vampires” in this book was very unique. The book was dark and mysterious and a fantastic read. Tim O’Rourke’s version of “vampires” in this book was very unique. Obviously, I don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone planning on reading the book, but it certainly wasn’t something I’d heard before. And yet it went really well with the story and I didn’t feel like I was reading something I’d heard a thousand times. This book was surrounded in mystery. I never quite knew what was going on and every now and then when I thought I did...BAM....something else would happen and all my thoughts and conclusions would be thrown out the window. It was very intense, but I found I liked it and it kept me reading—eager to know what was going on.

I really liked Keira. Her “gift” made thing interesting and I’m still eager to know more about it. At its base it’s a very instinct based gift, but all things considered in this book, I think it’s potentially going to be poor and have a bigger purpose as the trilogy continues. Keira was a real go-getter. Fresh out of the academy, but eager and confidant in what she was doing. She missed nothing, picking up and seeing this most others wouldn’t notice. Nothing escaped her notice and she put two and two together so well. She was such a great all round character, and I generally wanted the best for her in this book; she was someone I enjoyed following on her tale.

Oh, how I hated Murphy and Potter in the beginning. Honestly, the way they treated Keira at first and their attitudes towards police work made me wanna sock it to them! They seemed to be nothing but cruel jerks yet in the end I was surprised by the people they actually turned out to be. Potter’s still an arrogant jerk, but there’s something about him, and it may have to do with what he does for Keira at the very end of the book (not saying what) that makes me think there’s more to him.
I don’t necessarily feel like the relationship between Keira and Luke was rushed, because in most ways it wasn’t. There was a connection between them that they both felt and they were attracted to one another, but occasionally I’d feel like certain things between them were a tad forced. I’m also not quite sure that the feelings of “love” between them are plausible. They didn’t know each other well enough to feel that way, nor it they really spend that much time together. Like and lust I’d totally believe is accurate, but maybe not love. Still, I think my feelings about that could change in future books. They defiantly have the potential to have something really real and I’ll be watching for that in the rest of the trilogy.

Vampire Shift is an edgy tale full of suspense and mystery. The storyline is engaging and the characters interesting. This is a great start to a fantastic new series, and with so many questions left at the end, I for one can’t wait for the second instalment!

What a wonderful start to a new series as I tend to get bored with the whole vampire thing after awhile as it has been done to death. Kiera is a green police woman with little experience and her new posting is nothing that the academy could have prepared her for. I actually just re-read this book. The first time I read this was when the third one had just came out, I think? I really enjoyed the idea of the book and I quite liked the characters.

So, today I finished reading this book, it took a few days since I only read during commute to my different jobs, but I swear more than once I almost missed my bus-stop because I was so buried in the book. The characters were so easy-to-get-to-know... the paranormal stuff in it was simply credible and the writing was easy on the mind. There are times when writing a review is harder than usual. You realize the author is a real person, not a name on a cover and what you're going to say may hurt her/him.

Vampire Shift is an indie and I'm ready to give some slack to self published books. The authors often do not have access to editing and proofreading (and is unfortunately evident).

Yep, Tim O’ Rourke’s Vampire Shift scared the bejeesus out of me, and as I am a huge fan of horror, scaring me is something not easily done. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that creeped me out so much I felt like hiding under the covers after turning off the lights. Reading Vampire Shift was like watching a horror movie on the big screen. It had all the ingredients necessary to get my adrenaline pumping – terrifying vampire monsters, a sinister, small town cut off from the rest of civilization, the customary ominous old priest (a character with a twist I never could’ve predicted), the main character snowed-in with no means of escape, desecrated graves and dark underground tunnels leading to…well, I don’t want to give away too much. The entire time while reading this I had goosebumps all over and many times nearly jumped out of my seat with fright. This book is not for the faint of heart I can assure you. Horror fans be warned, you will love this!

What more can I say? The writing is good and without too much detailed descriptions the author still managed to create a sense of foreboding and trepidation throughout the story. Everyone was a suspect. Seriously. The good guys seemed to be the bad guys, and then certain things happened to convince me the bad guys are actually the good guys, and then some more unexplained things happened to have me so thoroughly confused I couldn’t make heads or tails of who the good guys and who the bad guys were. I have to hand it to the author – he knows how to construct a complex plot that keeps the reader intrigued, riveted, and guessing right up to the end – and maybe even questioning the strength of your bladder. All the characters – protagonists and antagonists alike – were all richly formed and three-dimensional. None of them, not even the minor characters, felt like carbon copies of characters I’ve come across before in similar books or movies. I was greatly impressed by the author’s creativity, especially in the fight-scenes and how I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat while paging my way through all the nail-biting suspense. So folks, keep an eye on this author. He’s going to make it big! And horror junkies…why are you still reading this? Aren’t you supposed to be on chapter two of this book by now? So I've finally given this series a chance. BUT, my curiosity got the best of me so I gave it a try and was reminded: Never judge a book by its cover.

Vampire Shift is about a 20-year-old police constable Kiera Hudson, the MC, who is recently assigned to investigate a very strange town called The Ragged Cove. There, she met her new colleagues, Murphy, Potter, and the eye-catching constable Luke Bishop. Kiera has a gift of seeing what other people can't---not like having a third-eye sort of gift, but more of being a very keen observer; that she notices every clue there is behind a crime scene that other investigators miss. With that said, Kiera is fully confident that she can and will solve the mystery behind the murders in The Ragged Cove. That is, until she found out that the answer to the said mystery is quite the opposite of everything she've concluded.

The story was really UNpredictable, at least for me. During the first few pages, I was rolling my eyes because I thought I have figured everything out by that time. I thought I was one step ahead of the main character in solving the mystery---which is, as you know, very annoying because nothing seems surprising anymore---but, boy, I was so wrong. I even came to a point wherein, like the main character, I don't know who and what to believe in anymore. Like, I'm doubting every character in the book because I was so clueless as who the culprit/s are. Another thing that I liked the most about this book, apart from the twist and turns of the story, is that every question I've had while reading it were answered; there were completely no loose ends. Except, of course, the cliff hanger in the end (but that's okay because there are sequels for that). And, I must point out that I liked Potter more than Luke, just sayin'. :P

So, if you haven't given this book a chance yet, then trust me my fellow booknerd, that this series is not to be missed!(less)

Vampire Shift was thought to be released on Amazon.com on Sunday, June 26, 2011 but to my surprise I got a message from the author that is was up and ready for download! This is not your run of the mill vampire story by any means. There are murders, and mysteries, twist and turns throughout. The main character, Kiera Hudson, is a fresh out of the Academy cop in the southwest of England, who volunteers to go to the town of The Ragged Cove, a town so remote she loses radio signal in her car the closer she came to the town, no phone signal, closed signs on most of the little shops and stores that line the cobblestone streets, and on first inspection not a soul around. Oh and also a town where other cops that have been sent to work there have gone mysteriously missing! O'Rourke left nothing missing in my imagination of this quaint little town. His descriptions are so thorough, and the story plays out beautifully. On arriving to The Ragged Cove, Kiera pops in to the police department to meet her co-workers, one a hottie, one a arrogant jerk, and another a grandfatherly type. Not soon after saying her hello's she tags along to a murder call and gets her first taste of the craziness going on in this quiet little town. As the story progresses Kiera discovers things about her family she never thought possible and finds love she wasn't looking for. Things are not always as they seem in The Ragged Cove and you will be on the edge of your seat wanting to know more the further along you read. This is a great beginning to a Kiera Hudon trilogy that will not disappoint! (less)

I love vampire books and when I saw the cover of Vampire Shift (Book One) The Kiera Hudson Trilogy I was instantly attracted to this book and I was not disapointed by the story. It was a different and refreshing take on vampires whcih gripped me from the beginning through to the end. There is almost a traditional feel to this vampire story, with holy water, crucifixes and stakes but it also has a unigue spin on it. The story is dark and creepy in places and bllod thirsty.

I loved the characters. Starting with Kiera Hudson the new police recruit, she was fiesty, intelligent and a match for her male colleagues. She has a unique ablitiny of 'seeing' things that others couldn't. This at first didn't seem to be a supernatural ablity but as the story progressed I wasn't so sure and this I'm sure we will find out more about in the second book along with Kiera herself. She was a character that I really rooted for. I enjoyed the relationship that started between her and fellow officer Luke Bishop. There was an instant attraction between them and at times I could really feel the intensity between them.

There are plenty of other great characters in this book of note Potter and Murphy. Potter comes across as an arrogant, tough officer who has no time for Kiera. But as the book went on I began to feel differently towards him. Murphy was a very likeable officer although he was set in his ways and does things just how he wants to do them. He comes across as not really fit to do his job, but when he needs to he takes control. I think Bishop, Potter and Murphy will definatley be grabbing all the females attention.

The book was faced paced, with some incredible action scenes that really put me in the thick of it with them. I can't think of one thing that I didn't like about this book and I can't wait for the second book in the series. There seems so much more to find out about Kiera, Luke, Potter and Murphy.

'Vampire Shift' is the new vampire series to watch out for - and if this is the start, the rest of series promises to be great. This book is one that I will go back to again and again.

Let me start by saying that when I first read the synopsis for Vampire Shift I was a little leery. I mean it's talking about police work, crime scenes, murder investigations, the main chic is a cop...To say that my Urban Fantasy radar was going off is a bit of an understatement.

More like there was a four alarm siren in my head, bleeding my brain through my ears, screaming Don't do this to yourself!! You don't like Urban Fantasy/CSI type books!

Needless to say, I was pretty intrigued and decided to check out Vampire Shift, the first in the Kiera Hudson series by Tim O’Rourke. Needless to say, I was pretty intrigued and decided to check out Vampire Shift, the first in the Kiera Hudson series by Tim O’Rourke. The cover alone drew me in and after I began reading, I simply couldn’t put the book down.

Vampire Shift follows a 20-year-old Kiera who just graduated from the police academy. Upon graduation, she volunteers to be stationed in the small English town of The Ragged Cove. This costal town has a bad reputation for the number of murders that have been occurring over the past few years. Once she arrives in the town, she thinks that she may have gotten herself into a very strange situation. With her special gift of sight, she is a very thorough policewoman and she sees clues that no one else seems to be able to see. After her run-in with a vampire at her second crime scene, Kiera begins to question her fellow policemen and her own past. Complete with crucifixes, graveyards and holy water, this story will definitely have you guessing!

I really loved reading this book. First and foremost, this was a very well written novel. O’Rourke did not over do his descriptions or introductions into his own, different vampire world. He gave you as a reader just enough to understand what was going on, but not enough to keep you from trying to figure out the mystery behind this little, seaside town and its' inhabitants. Also, O’Rourke didn’t overplay the romance in this novel. Make no mistake, there are some very hunky men and a great romance in the book, but the story is about just that, the story. Vampire Shift plays most heavily on the mystery surrounding Kiera and the other characters and I really enjoyed this change of pace.

As an older reader of young adult fiction, I was pleased to read about a more mature character. Kierea wasn’t a 16-year-old high school student struggling with what to do with her life; she had a job and lived on her own. It was different to read a paranormal romance book where I could place myself in the main character's shoes.

O’Rourke’s own personal take on vampires was especially refreshing to read as most writers as of late are taking up the same story as the vampires in Twilight. After all, vampires do drink human blood so they’re supposed to seem a little scary! In O'Rourke's Vampire Shift, he shows readers once again to never count a self-published author out!(less)

First and foremost, O'Rourke presents an intriguing take on the vampire genre. First and foremost, O'Rourke presents an intriguing take on the vampire genre. I'm not going to give it away here, though; you'll have to read Vampire Shift to find out.

Second, Vampire Shift is also a well constructed mystery novella. O'Rourke drops hints to the reader and leads them along the path of discovery and deduction through the eyes of Kiera; however, be forewarned that things aren't always what they seem and the most obvious answer isn't always the right one. I'm a reader who loves to figure things out before the reveal and, still, Vampire Shift threw me for some loops. You may think that you have it all figured out, but don't get too full of yourself… I can assure you it'll lead to disappointment.

Finally in the plus column, the reader is introduced to many major plot lines that I assume will run throughout the series. While it is somewhat frustrating to have a substantial number of plot lines and mysteries not solved by the end of the novella, this is a calculated plan of action on the part of the author. A sufficient number of mysteries are resolved to leave the reader satisfied with the story, but enough are left unresolved to spur interest in future installments of the series. I know that I'm hooked, at least enough to move on to number two in the series.

So, you may be asking yourself: If Vampire Shift has all these things going for it, why didn't you give it five stars?

Well, the writing feels like it's missing some necessary polish. There are pronounced pacing/time issues in this novella. While I know that I'm dealing with fantasy here, I'm not presented with a world whose time scale is noted to be vastly different from my normal waking world. The events I'm presented with in the novella, though, sometimes seem like they could take up 40 hour days… Also, the pacing of the writing seems to be out of sync with the pacing of the events at some parts in the book. It's not horrible, but it's not wonderful, either.

All of this, though, is nothing compared to the editing! There are quite a number of typos/grammatical errors for such a short piece; they're distracting. Also distracting, formatting issues, uneven indenting being the biggest offender. Quite frankly, the grammatical errors and formatting anomalies were enough to drive me batty (pun intended) at times... I'm all for self publishing, but not as an excuse for poor editing and presentation.

Overall, while the concepts, plot lines and structure of the story are all fantastic, the prose and presentation feel unpolished. Hopefully these will come with a bit more time. In the meantime - Tim, if you're reading this - I'd be willing to lend a hand with the editing!(less)

Shelves: vampires

Started reading Vampire Shift and literally couldn't put it down until I finished it. What a fun book. Not only do you get your fill of vampires but it's a great mystery novel too, lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end. I love how O'Rourke combines some traditional vampire mythology with a unique and modern twist. Really looking forward to the next book in this series.

I found this book when I was searching out some other authors who write vampires novels. The cover instantly caught my eye and reading the blurb about it made me drop it into my "to read" list. I found that the cover stayed with me and when I went to figure out which book to read next, the front cover of this book reached out to me and pulled me in.

I was disappointed with this book, considering it has such good reviews. True, it's a different kind of vampire book, but I just wasn't drawn in by it. I didn't take to the way it was written and I didn't feel much for the characters either - they just felt flat to me.

Great book with many twists and turns. Kept me captivated and wanting to keep reading. The charactors are so well written they grab you and pull you in. The description of scenery is second to none and it makes you feel like you are in the book with them, seeing and going through what they are. The protagonist has the amazing Holmes-like ability to make instant deductions based on minute details. Unfortunately in other respects she's kind of an idiot. In Chapter 3 she learns that a group of flying blood-drinking people are committing murders at night, and that the village policemen are doing a stunningly terrible job of investigation and are only seen at night. I was not sure what to expect when I bought this book and at first some of the formatting flaws in the book had me scared that I was reading a dud. However, once I got past the imperfections of formatting and some spelling/grammar issues I discovered a story which was much better than the presentation.
