This was another Christmas gift for myself I absolutely love Biblical fiction, but I never know if I’m going to connect with the story……that was NOT a problem with Prophet! By the first chapter I was hooked! Not only is Ela’s relationship with the Infinite fascinating and precious, but I truly wanted to see her story unfold. I was nervous the whole time about her life span, but I was also truly amazed by her obedience knowing she’d have to make difficult choices and sacrifices the whole time.

"The Prophet" is a beautifully written book that stirs the heart concerning their own relationship with God. This is the first fictional book I have ever read that portrayed a relationship with Christ so intimate and personal! It was amazing and it made me reflect on the goodness of God, who wants us to talk to Him like we would talk to a friend!
One of the things I really liked about this book is it made me think about my own walk with Christ. As Christians, we all have a calling to be a discipl...more

Great foundation book for the start of this series. I'm not normally excited about series but this one is definitely the exception. This book was easy to read, there was a great flow to it and the urge to not put it down until I had finished. Sometimes this kind of imagery can be hard to get across to the reader, but I didn't find that the case in this book. I found it uplifting and enjoyed the "inner" conversations between Ela and her Creator as well as her sense of His Presence. I found it to...more
A young lady in the days of horses, chariots, swords, and kings, makes an unlikely prophet. Her little sister Tzana, a fragile child with a debilitating disease, makes an unlikely traveling companion. The huge war-horse that is anything but gentle, makes an unlikely protector for the two girls. But they journey to wherever their god, the Infinite, sends them on His official business.

Prophet is R. J. Larson’s first novel in the fantasy genre as well as the first in a series titled Books of the Infinite. The author writes with ease in making the story a page-turner. It was very easy for me to get involved with the characters and their stories.

I used to wonder, what did the prophets of the Old Testament feel like? What was it like to be in such close communication with God, to receive visions from Him? Well, if you ask me, Prophet paints a pretty realistic picture.
The book starts with Ela, a girl from Parne who suddenly experiences a vision and hears the voice of the Infinite (God). Against her protests that she is too young and a girl, she faces a choice - to accept the role of a prophet (and prophets die young), or to reject it and...more

Books of the Infinite #1
By R.J. Larson
Ella Roch of Parne is the least likely person anyone would expect to be chosen a prophet of the Infinite. But the Infinite chooses Ella to be His voice of warning to the neighboring nations and kingdoms.
When Ella sees a vision of destruction and massacre in Ytar, she has no idea why the Infinite would send such horror to her. But she soon learns the truth - she has been chosen to bring a warning to change to the kingdom of Istgard for their evil dec...more

I thoroughly enjoyed reading R. J. Larson’s new novel, Prophet.
It’s a quick-paced novel with good twists and turns, good character development, and descriptive settings. It is not a Christian novel, per se, but it is full of scriptural truth shared in an allegorical fashion. I don’t think the word God or Christ was ever uttered, yet, I clearly heard God speaking through the plot. It was a powerful reminder to listen for God’s voice, walk in his ways, and follow his truth. The tales are somewhat...more

Ela of Parne loves the Infinite. When He calls her to become His prophet, she doesn't refuse. With her sister, she sets out to follow the will of the Infinite. When she's thrown into prison for speaking the Word, she meets a young Tracelander, Kein Lantec, and they form an unlikely partnership. He is one of the few she's come into contact with that actually seeks the Infinite. Ela knows that prophets die young. Will her fate be death at seventeen or will the Infinite in His mercy have other plan...more
By the end of the first pages, I’d swallowed the hook and joyously succumbed to be reeled in, one blessed page at a time.
Engaging and unique enough for the pickiest of readers (me) yet straightforward and clean enough for the youngest (I plan to let me 10yo bookworm read it) Prophet is one of those books you’ll never forget.
It's Old Testament meets Star Wars, minus the space elements. The author weaves stories of Old Testament prophets into an imaginary land and time in a way that breathes fresh...more

When I picked up this book I intended to read a couple of pages and then go to bed. It was, after all, a work night. I stayed up until I had turned the last page at 2 am.
I loved the raw feeling of this novel. There is a brutal honesty to the writing and an exuberant, glorious joy whenever the young prophetess, Ela, speaks of her Creator. The reverence that she has for the Infinite is beautiful, and her unquestioning love, loyalty, and faith are so wonderful and encouraging to read. Although this...more

If the cover alone on this book, does not make you want to pick this one up and begin reading, I don't know what will. Just the premise alone about a young girl being chosen as a prophet immediately draws me in because we would almost expect a prophet to be a male character instead. So for female readers, this is already an exciting beginning.

For Christian young adults hungering for an engaging fantasy, Prophet will fill the appetite and leave them satisfied. The book is fast paced enough to keep them turning pages and close enough to a Biblical world view to satisfy both parents and teen. Adults, too, may find Prophet an entertaining, light read. I did.

It's interesting that R.J. Larson goes through lengths to hide her gender. It takes a tad bit of research to find out she is female. Honestly, though just by the writing you can tell she is female. Prophet is better than expected though. You have a cast full of characters that are interesting, and the way Larson weaves her faith into the subject matter is creative. Also, for people that don't read much fantasy this combines enough romance, and action to still be appealing outside of that genre.

I must say, I was blown away by Prophet. I haven’t read as much Christian fiction in recent years as I used to, but at first glance, the cover of Prophet just... called to me. It’s absolutely gorgeous and certainly captures the beauty of the text inside.
I’ve never read any Christian fiction that was considered fantasy, so that certainly had me intrigued. What would it be like? How would it be set up? Would it compare to fantasy in other genres, or would it be simply a watered down imitation? I...more

This book is classified as Christian fantasy. 17 year old Ela Roeh has had a vision of war and her Creator, the Infinite, has asked her to become his prophet. It will be up to her to journey to Istgard to try to get the Istgardians to repent of their evil ways and release the prisoners. Ela accepts being the Prophet knowing that most prophets die young and even though she has her doubts about her abilities to be the prophet she will have to trust the Infinite. So begins her journey to Istgard. H...more
I’ll admit it; I read this story for the cover. Isn’t it gorgeous?! I’m really glad I gave it a chance though. It’s a really neat Christian story in fantasy form.

"A silver hair prophet has failed."
Ela Roeh of Parne has many reasons why she shouldn't become a prophet. She has a bad temper, is unrefined, makes irrational decisions...not to mention she is only seventeen and a girl!
But the creator has His reasons for picking Ela to be His prophet. If she accepts His offer, the wise, old saying will become evident in her own life. Ela will die young.

Upon receiving this book I was a little skeptical as I am not a fan of Christian Fantasy. However, by the end of the first chapter I was hooked. The book refers to the "Infinite" as the almighty creator, because of this I did not feel as though I needed any background in Christian religion to understand the plot. I also loved the way the characters were flawed, so often lead characters seem too perfect to be believable. Ela however, complained and whined, just as any eighteen year-old girl would...more
I picked this up book because two of my favorite Christian authors (Anne Elisabeth Stengl and Donita K. Paul) spoke highly of it and I'm glad that I did.
The story was very engaging and beautifully written. The characters were thoroughly enjoyable (especially the wonderfully roguish Kien), the dialogue never felt like it dragged down the pace of the story, and the descriptions were a perfect balance of being easy to 'see' without bogging anything down. Prophet immediately pulled me into a unique yet familiar world. From references to Samuel and the foretold death of the Priest’s sons to the basic concept of a prophet, I found myself thrown into the Old Testament in a refreshing and fun way. Between the non-stop action, a beautifully detailed world full of strange creatures, humor, and a love interest, this story is never dull.

Ela Roeh's life is turned upside down when The Infinite asks her to become his prophet. She must leave her family, her country, and everything she knows in order to travel to pass on the Infinite’s message to a foreign king. She shows amazing strength of character when she is embroiled in politics and war. This book is Christian Fiction, and is probably meant for young adults; however, despite Ela’s youth, she has the maturity of an adult. The Message can be a bit heavy-handed (which is understa...more
While reading this, I kept thinking about the prophets from the Old Testement. This might be fantasy but it does a fantastic job of diplaying how prophets from the Bible listened to God and comunicated His words to others. Ela is faithful to the Infinate and is a wonderful example of what Christians should strive to do for God. The pronounciation guide was a life saver too because there would have been many mistakes for me if there hadn't been one. :) My only complaints would be that I wish ther...more
This book in a way spoke on the elements of being a prophet noted from the prophets lives from scripture. Ela was set in a world where the prophets where not women, they also where not called at seventeen and yet she was. We find that through the course of the story she battles with the tradition of her people that all true prophets died young. This knowledge weighed on her heart because when she met Kien the last thing she wanted was to fall in love but she did anyway.

The Cover: I love this cover. I love the font, the way the cover is designed, and I love the model. The model looks like what I would imaging Ela to look like. She is innocent looking, dressed in robes, and carrying her "walking stick". I love they they put an effect on the stick to make it look like it was glowing. I think the cover designer did a beautiful job on this book.

Riddle me this. What if God asked you to leave your family, all that you know and become his prophet- to bring truth and prophecy to people that really don’t want to hear it, don’t want to obey it and oh yeah, the kicker, being in His service will mean that your life will be cut short. It doesn’t sound like a job that most would sign up for. But Ela Roeh of Parne a young 17 year old girl somehow with her close relationship with “the Infinite” just can’t refuse. She is a most remarkable girl with...more
A wonderful YA Christian book. Ela Roeh of Parne is chosen to be a prophet of The Infinite. She is a wonderful female lead. A less than perfect individual chosen by God as his prophet, proof that there is hope for all of us. I enjoyed her character, she is young, but not a pushover. A sometimes bad tempered individual who has no trouble speaking her mind. We are able to see "The Infinite" as a more personal God.

I don't know how I managed to function at work the next day. A straight read-through, and I'll make another pass after my wife has had a turn.
Very engaging first work, Christian fiction, from the perspective of an 18-year old female. God offers a choice to this young woman, to serve as a prophet of doom to a depraved king and kingdom. The relationship is one of intimate friends, bantering, some rough edges adjusting, and a life purpose to be envied.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. In the first few chapters of the book, I just wasn't into it. The writing style wasn't flowing for me, and I worried that it may have been because it's more geared toward young adults. But by chapter 6, I was ready to go, and it turned out to be a really entertaining story but thought provoking as well. I don't like to give a review low stars, however if the book can't hold my attention or spark something in me after the first 100 pages then I have to move on to other books calling my name. What I liked about this story was the main Character, the way the Infinite (God) spoke to her and she learned to listen and trust and obey him. There were action scenes here and there. What I didn't like was that the story was just so so. There wasn't anything to keep me wanting more, there was no mystery, o...more
