3.5 Stars. I find myself in a bit of an odd predicament with this book in that I actually preferred the prequel, Blooded: A Jessica McClain Novella, to this first book of the series. It was more of a well rounded story throughout, while this one had a few stops and starts. Watch out Amanda Carlson, I think I'm in love! I inhaled her debut book like my life depended on it. I haven't read a werewolf novel this good since... since... probably my re-read of Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld books earlier this year. Seeing how her novels are the bar by which I measure all furry fiction, that's saying something! Full Blooded's lore is unique and bewitching, her characters are dynamic and her wolves are howling-ly formidable. The action is unrelenting and the world building is so fluid that you don't even realize its happening. Every page is better than the last and the ending pretty much guarantees that you'll be reading Hot Blooded in 2013.

I enjoyed the premise behind this book. Jessica is the only female to have ever been born from a werewolf father but she doesn't carry the shifter gene. She's been making a life for herself as a private investigator living outside of the pack for a number of years now when all of a sudden, *poof*, she wolf's out. Well... that was... unexpected! Her biggest dream and nightmare have come true. It's a neat way for Amanda to introduce readers to her heroine and to her breed of werewolves at the same time. Even though Jessica's father is alpha, she wasn't raised as pack which means that this world is as new to her as it is to us readers. I enjoyed the learn-as-you-go way that this story unfolds.

Carlson's mythology is fresh and exciting. She not only put a new spin on the genre but actually reinvented it; from the Cain legend, to the lycan twist to the inner workings of the pack. Each new discovery is better than the last. I was a little worried about the "only female werewolf" storyline because that's a Kelley Armstrong trademark in my opinion but, Amanda took a completely different route than what I'd expected and really made this angle her own. Full Blooded is absolutely overflowing with werewolf excellence; every page reveals something new and interesting. I've definitely caught the Jessica McClain fever!

When I first met Jessica in Blooded it was insta-love. She's loyal, courageous and a wicked savage fighter. I think that I might have a bit of a girl crush on her... In this book she handles herself beautifully in the face of the monster of a wake-up call that she just received. McClain takes everything in stride and behaves like you'd expect the daughter of a powerful alpha to. Jessica definitely knows how to make an entrance and her debut onto the Urban Fantasy scene will not go unnoticed.

Not to steal any of McClain's thunder but the side characters in this book are equally as extraordinary. James is sex incarnate. I couldn't stop drooling! Even though he's not Jessica's mate that doesn't stop her from exploring his hot bod. Danny is fun, a great friend and will definitely make you crack a smile. More than once, I might add. Tyler is the brother that I wish I had and one of Jessica's biggest supporters. I loved their alpha and father as well. He's a formidable force and has his kids' backs. Last but not least is Rourke. He puts an interesting spin on the age-old battle of dogs vs cats and I can't wait to learn more about him.

Full Blooded is the first installment in what I predict to be the next big werewolf phenomenon. If you like being at the forefront of "the next big thing" then I'd advise you to read this one. Stat. One last thing before I wrap-up my review... OMG! OMG! OMG! SQUUUUUEEEEEE! (hey, I'm allowed one fan girl moment!).

I never warmed up to Jessica or her plight of being the only female werewolf that had to be protected at all costs. Her powers were too Mary Sue. She told us time and time again she had to earn her right to live off the compound but her dad gave in and listened to her every time. When was he overbearing? Jessica is twenty-six years old and had been living on her own for years. I was glad he respected her but she kept claiming she had to fight for her right to live alone. I never saw an example to prove this. Show not tell. Why did he let the pack abuse Jessica? She was more powerful than even the Alpha but always had to be protected. She needed a scene where she protected herself if I'm going to believe this. It made more sense to kick people out of your pack that asked for your baby daughter to be murdered.
They dropped the Ray plot line for half the book. Jessica used to be a cop until one cop became suspicious and started stalking her. This could have been where she handled something on her own but instead the pack handled all of her problems.
We were told time and time again she was special because she's female, lycan, etc. etc. These were all attributes she was born into.

Yet in the past few years, she has managed to form herself a life away from most of the pack and its scrutiny. But that carefully constructed life comes tumbling down when she makes the first change to a wolf years past when she should have. Suddenly everyone wants a piece of her, and with the attacks coming from all sides, it is only a matter of time until someone succeeds in their goal of eliminating her permanently.

I absolutely adore Jessica's character. She is just so sassy and fun, as well as fiercely loyal to her pack. This is especially impressive due to the fact that vast majority of them have shunned her, and otherwise made her life incredibly miserable due to their superstitions. Granted, she is the only female werewolf to ever have been known to exist, but that should have made her something to be treasured rather than despised and mistrusted. It really is amazing that she didn't turn bitter due to her treatment, and that only made her more admirable. I was also incredibly impressed with the way she handled everything that was thrown at her in the very short time after she experienced that first change. Of course, she did have a few moments of panic when things became overwhelming, but she regained control in no time flat. Not only was Jess an amazing character, but the rest of the cast was pretty spectacular as well. Each and every single one, both good and bad were fully fleshed out, making them very realistic. I won't get into any more specifics as this book and characters deserve to be experienced directly, but suffice it to say they were awesome.

The mythology in Full Blooded was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the wolves, with the alpha structure, as well as the telepathy aspects between Jess and her twin as well as her father the alpha. It was nice to see that while the Alpha did hold most the power, he wasn't above reproach, and had to be careful especially in regards to Jessica. In addition to the wolves, there were also many other types of shifters as well as witches, vamps, and sorcerers, making for a very interesting variety. I especially liked to see the way those dynamics played out, especially as politics between clans played a part. I have a feeling those politics will be playing an even larger role in future books especially as each clan still clambers to get their hands on Jessica.

I haven't enjoyed a werewolf story this much since the first time I read Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. I can hardly believe this is Amanda's debut novel as everything flows like she has countless books under her belt. With her writing being this good right out of the gate, I am incredibly excited to see where things lead. Granted, she does already have a bit of that evil author tendency with the nasty cliffhanger ending, but that is easily forgiven in light of how amazing the rest of the book was. That being said, I am incredibly desperate to get my hands on the next installment. In fact, Full Blooded has easily earned itself a place as one of my top reads for 2012. Considering the very large volume of books I read (300+ per year), this is no small feat. Full Blooded is an absolute must read for fans of Urban Fantasy. After reading Blooded, the novella of the story (that takes place before this one), I was more than curious to learn more about our heroine, Jessica McClain. The contrary isn’t possible! I must say that I was impressed by this strong woman and I was looking forward to the rest of her history. I can affirm now that this impatience was rewarded when I see how much I enjoyed this first volume.

Some time has passed since the end of the novella and Jessica is installed and lives away from home, working with her friend, Nick as a private detective. However she lives now under a new identity and nobody knows who she really is. This life suits her perfectly but nothing would be perfect if an event didn’t turn everything upside down, threatening to destroy the life she worked so hard to build. In fact, now against all odds, our young heroine turns, for the first time, into a werewolf, something that will break the life she had been forged and reinforce the myth where she is the main issue. Moreover, being the only woman in this case does not bring her much sympathy, far from it! And when everyone decides to come after her, Jessica doesn’t have much choice.

I have not had much opportunity to immerse myself in a werewolf book featuring the first adaptation of a new shape-shifter, and I must say it was very pleasant to discover it. I’m sure that it must ultimately be more complicated for the author to get to show the feelings and the stages of the transformation processing. But Amanda Carlson perfectly succeeded in this challenge and she brings us with her in her story that we don’t want to leave. It was very interesting to follow Jessica in all her changes and challenges. We can quite easily relate ourselves to her, as her only dream is to have a normal life, but if only it was possible ... She is a strong young woman, who doesn’t run away where there is a problem and she has more problems than a normal person! I was really impressed by her composure and her desire to be accepted and to be treated equally.

But there is more than our heroine and all the other characters are also very intriguing. It was a great pleasure to discover more about them every time and to get to understand them well. James Tyler, Callum, and many other people are incredible, we can only admire their sense of family. Oh, but have I forgotten to mention Rourke? Me? Impossible! I think this is the character about whom we askes myself many more questions throughout the story and I'm really curious to learn even more now. I must say that he is a difficult man to forget (yes, you'll see!).

I think you understand now that this first volume was a wonderful discovery and the only thing I want to do now is to be able to immerse myself in the second one. With such an end, it would be surprising if this wasn’t the case. I was almost in despair when I saw that there were no more chapters. The story ends with the beginning of something much bigger. I really can’t wait! So, here we discover a novel mixing love, betrayal, but also many changes, something that keeps the reader in suspense throughout the story.

I had many surprises all along the novel and I didn’t expect that the author would introduce us so many things and characters here. This is something that allows us to better understand the world in which we evolve but that also makes us ask many other questions. I think, or at least I sincerely hope that we can discover more in the second volume.(less)

I don't envision this novel, which I enjoyed, will have many negative reviews around, and I'd hazard a guess that this one will be one of the more critical ones, and that's a good thing... I think. Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson is as close a sure thing debut as any I've read in the urban fantasy genre. Because of this so called myth, the werewolves in the Compound where Jessica was born have felt the need to eradicate our heroine, with very little success, but not for lack of trying I assure you. Thanks to Jessica's need to live, and the help of her twin brother Tyler, her best friend, a werefox named Nick, her father and Alpha Pack leader, Callum McClain, as well as his sexy second in command James, the weres have had no success. I believe the blurb speaks for itself as far as what Full Blooded is about, so I won't go into the plot too much. This is one story you'll actually have to read to understand better.

So much damn testosterone... Me gusta! These hotties... I'm calling dibs on them all xD I fell in love with all of them, but especially Tyler, Jessica's twin brother. He's so protective of her, it's endearing. But the man is delicious for so many other reasons. For one, he's funny ;) And he's Alpha, baby. Strong and resilient, just like his sister, only a hotter version ;) There's also James. Callum's second in command, and another of Jessica's protectors... There's sexy times with said hottie and it was brutally hot! He can ravage me anytime! ;D [I have no shame, I know this >.< lol] Then there's Danny, sexy perverted Danny. Leave it to him to want sex at the most inopportune times, but the man is loyal, not to mention funny as well. I loved these guys for all they're worth and I'm sure you'd all fall in love as well... but THEY'RE MINE!! :) ♥ LOL

The romance; you'll be happy to know that there is some despite all action and angst, his name is Rourke, and he's a Warrior of Old. Apparently that makes him old as hell, and one deadly ass mercenary. His True Form is unknown, only that he's a werecat, but we don't know what exactly yet. And that's irritating to be honest, why the mystery? o.O there was one thing I found even more annoying though, and that's the whole mate thing... I would have loved to see it develop a lot more through the story than as it did.

The beginning takes you directly into the night when Jessica finally turns, and from then, all hell breaks loose, both literally and figuratively. From rogue wolves to vampires and mercenaries, Full Blooded keeps you on edge the whole time. There's a mystery surrounding the Cain Myth and how someone seems to always be two steps ahead of Jessica and her Pack's, and I'm dying to know who the hell has been behind it all this whole time. So I'm definitely in for the next installment... I couldn't wait, so I went ahead and read Hot Blooded, and... well you'll just have to come back next time for my review ;) (less)

As there are no female werewolves, they mate with human females. They have a low birthrate, so they sleep with lots and lots of human females. These women don't know they are sleeping with a werewolf. A werewolf that maintains his disguise through magic "saliva roofie". It is not implied that the roofie helps them get women into bed, but there is mention of instigating some "process" to impregnante them (I'm imagining big werewolf claws poking holes in a condom), which the women don't sound like they're aware of. The final nail in the coffin is the fact that carrying a werewolf baby has a high mortality rate for the women, which they're also not told. These guys are essentially using these women as disposable brood farms and endangering their lives without their knowledge.

Now compare this impression with Jessica's description of her parents relationship (before her mother died in childbirth, that is), and it paints a different picture. Her father loved her mother, and doesn't fit the whole date-rapist, baby-farmer described above. Unfortunately, the lengthy, awful, technical description dwarfs any "fond memories" related about Jessica's parents, meaning those few sentences don't balance out what sounds like a fundamentally mysoginistic and creepy race of men.

I'm curious about Jessica's destiny, as well as learning more about her mate, but I'm not particularly impressed by the story thus far.

Update after completion: The peaks and valleys of this book have cancelled out into a general "I liked it". The preternatural mythology is interesting, but my excitement over this world was tempered by a few credulity stretches (lots of preternatural action without consequence in this “closed world”) and the breeding mechanism of the werewolves made it very, very hard to forgive them as a species. Bizarre roofie saliva aside, it appears they sleep with as many women as they can with the intent to impregnate them. This is forgivable (and not new ground, *cough* World of the Lupi *cough*), but bearing a werewolf baby also has a very high mortality rate. So a woman don’t know she’s sleeping with a wolf, that he’s trying to knock her up , or that she has an increased risk of dying in childbirth. That is pretty goddamn cold.

The narrative was also rough in a few places. Carlson did a fairly good job presenting a lot of information without data dumps, but there are a few notable instances where she failed. I think the reason that I reacted so negatively to the werewolf breeding culture (ick) was that it was all dropped into conversation in a fairly artificial chunk.

This book reminded me a lot of Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series, both in the world and my reaction (as that is one series that I never quite finished). I look forward to reading more of the Full Blooded series, but I’m not confident in how far I’ll get.(less)

Everything was going well, until her wolf decided it was time to surface.

With her first shift, Jessica is forced to return to the pack. Her relationship with her father and brother are restored, but there are plenty of other wolves who see her as a threat. A prophecy says that a female werewolf will be an instrument of evil and eventually bring about the end of their race. Jessica is pretty sure she's not evil, but neither is she an average shifter. She is something special. Jess must figure out how to find balance with her wolf, while new threats to her safety come one after another.

I really liked Jessica's voice. She is strong and independent, but I never found her arrogant or over-confident. In fact, she was actually kind of humble and it was awesome watching her realize her potential. There is a strong cast of supporting characters, like her brother Ty and packmate James. (I do think Nick was a little under-utilized.) We've even got a love interest, who is very sexy and super-mysterious. And don't forget about that sex I mentioned earlier. Yowza. The romantic element evolved a bit suddenly, but I have a more patience with this in mate-stories than in traditional romance.

With the big climax, Carlson answered all my questions about who's been gunning for Jess. But she also opens a whole new can of worms with a set-up for the next book. I am equal parts excited and frustrated. Excited because it looks like it will be one hell of a second installment. Frustrated because I won't be able to read it until next March. Cliffhangers keel me, but apparently Amanda Carlson loves an open dangler.

Just being female has stirred up the people in the supernatural world, spreading rumors and myth she is evil and will bring down the pack. Now? Jessica will fight that it's not going to happen, but now things might change with Jessica's shift...along with her human life she's fought to have.

When Jess changed she tore up her apartment, bad. Of course the police were called and Nick, her business partner and best friend, made it look as a break in instead of a break out. But the cop on the case is not a fan of hers, and suspicious of her physical talents. She needs to keep the secret of being full-blooded werewolf from others as they believe her to be Cain's daughter, yet her newly born wolf is strong and ready to take the lead. Jess can't stay at the compound with her father and the pack as that would stir the pack wolves up and more suspicious, and has to get back to her alias life away from the pack, as Molly Hannon, hoping no one suspects her being Jessica McClain.

I feel for Jessica as her human world collides with the supernatural world, with the wolf she's becoming. Stirring up trouble that only can be handled by humans but caused by wolf strength, which is difficult to explain. Jessica keeps getting deeper as she learns how powerful and special her wolf is. There are many great secondary characters added to the mix. Danny. He's so loyal and knows his place, yet he says things that are fun to lighten Jessica and make her smile. I loved meeting him in Blooded, and still love him here. We have Tyler, her twin brother. Very strong, and similar to their dad. James... aw, he is special and I can't mention much more other than he's Jessica's dads number two, and close with the family. Then we have a hired hit men as well...and the one and only Rourke. Um, I'll stop there as you will want to see what happens with these two, as it's unexpected for both.

I REALLY like the wolf world created! The old lore's and connection to Lycans. Great set up, and finesse in playing the story out. We learn through the book of the werewolf ways and history as we go. It's given in pieces at exactly the right moment, not over told in a long history class. Which makes this read a fast one, along with the action and movement going on.

This story is full of action and pounding. I wasn't sure where the story would unfold to with Jessica's first change, but found I greatly liked the way things were playing out. Jessica tries to uphold her human persona while it's falling apart with the knowledge of her change. And that there just might be more to her, a lot more, than anyone had ever thought. Everything in Molly Hannon's simple human life is changing, as Jessica McClain comes into her own on all levels.

This is one Pack I'm definitely following and howling with. In the end we are left with our mouths hanging open, and scrounging for the next book. So many wants in the end. And Hot Blooded is a must read as soon as it's available!

Amanda has definitely figured out the right combination of information and action to keep a story fast forward and the reader drawn to flipping pages.(less)

I too was graciously allowed to receive the ARC for this book....as well as being one of the ones that got to read it a chapter or two at a time as it was being written.

J'étais impatiente de découvrir cette nouvelle série, surtout après avoir entendu beaucoup de bien de la part de Melliane, qui l'avait lue bien avant moi. Alors vous n'imaginez pas ma joie lorsque j'ai appris qu'elle allait sortir en France chez Le Livre de poche ! Il m'arrive de temps en temps de fonder beaucoup d'espoirs sur une nouvelle série pour finalement être déçue après mais ça n'a pas été le cas ici, bien au contraire, Sang nouveau a largement répondu à mes attentes. Ce premier tome a tous les ingrédients qu'il faut pour en faire une excellente série et j'ai pris énormément de plaisir à le lire. Je crois même que c'est la meilleure série de fantasy urbaine que j'ai lu depuis le début de l'année.

Jessica McClain, 26 ans, est détective privée. Mais elle est aussi depuis peu une louve-garou, la seule de toute la planète. L'histoire débute donc au moment où elle est en train de subir son tout premier changement en louve. Une transformation très douloureuse et qui ne sera pas sans conséquences. Sa transformation est un événement tout à fait nouveau et unique. Son père, Callum McClain, l'Alpha de la meute des territoires nord-américains du Nord ainsi que son frère Tyler, redoutent la réaction de la meute. Surtout qu'il y a encore quelques années, la plupart de ses membres voyaient en elle une menace pour leur espèce à cause du Mythe de Caïn. Mais en plus de l'hostilité de la meute, Jessica devra faire face à d'autres soucis. Car en effet, il semblerait que les autres communautés surnaturelles soient également à sa recherche...

Dès le début, j'ai apprécié Jessica. C'est une héroïne attachante, très forte, tant mentalement que physiquement. Depuis 7 ans, elle vit loin des siens sous une fausse identité, celle de Molly Hannon. Elle s'est énormément battue pour avoir droit à une vie normale et voilà qu'aujourd'hui, tout ce qu'elle a construit menace de s'écrouler. Son changement en louve-garou est sur le point de tout bouleverser mais elle ne cède pas pour autant à la panique. Ça a dû être terrible pour elle d'être rejetée par la meute de son père il y a 7 ans et pourtant, elle n'est pas rancunière. A présent tout ce qu'elle souhaite, c'est qu'ils l'acceptent enfin comme un membre à part entière de la meute. Beaucoup la regardent encore avec hostilité mais heureusement, elle pourra toujours compter sur le soutien de son père et de son frère qui feront tout ce qu'ils pourront pour la protéger. J'ai beaucoup aimé cette solidarité familiale, c'était très beau à voir. Jessica peut communiquer avec son père et Tyler, par télépathie. Elle peut également s'adresser à sa louve, à l'intérieur d'elle même, ce qui donne lieu à des passages assez drôles. Petit à petit, elles s'habituent l'une à l'autre, on voit bien qu'une certaine complicité s'installe entre Jessica et sa bête tout au long de l'histoire. J'ai adoré tous ces échanges.

C'était intéressant de découvrir le fonctionnement de la meute ainsi que ses us et coutumes. Alors bien sûr, on s’interroge sur ce mystérieux mythe de Caïn : quelle est son origine? Doit-on vraiment prendre cette vieille superstition au sérieux ? Nous ne savons que très peu de choses à ce sujet. Les événements prennent une tournure intéressante et assez inattendue avec l'arrivée de Colin Rourke. Et le moins qu'on puisse dire est qu'il s'en passe des choses ! L'histoire est captivante dès les toutes premières pages mais elle le devient encore plus dans le dernier tiers du livre où les rebondissements sont nombreux. C'est un pur concentré d'action. Le monde crée par Amanda Carlson est riche en surprises et en créatures surnaturelles de toutes sortes, allant des garous aux vampires, en passant par les sorciers, les démons, les ensorceleurs etc. J'avoue que pour les vampires, je ne les imaginais pas aussi flippants mais ça change de ce qu'on voit habituellement en matière de fantasy urbaine. Quant à l'Ensorceleuse, je me pose aussi pas mal de questions à son sujet, j'espère qu'on en saura davantage sur elle dans les prochains tomes.

Parmi les alliés de Jessica, en dehors de sa famille, nous avons Nick, qui est à la fois son meilleur ami et associé, puis Marcy leur secrétaire, sans oublier James, le bras droit de Callum et Danny. Ce dernier m'a d'ailleurs beaucoup fait rire à la fin. Mais celui qui nous intrigue le plus c'est sans nul doute notre mystérieux mercenaire, Rourke ! Il tarde un peu à faire son apparition dans l'histoire mais une fois qu'il entre en scène, on ne peut s'empêcher d'être aussitôt fasciné par lui. C'est un personnage qui suscite de nombreuses questions. Certaines d'entre elles trouveront leur réponse au fur et à mesure que l'on avancera dans la lecture mais pour ce qui est des autres, le mystère reste entier et là j'avoue que je suis vraiment très curieuse d'en savoir plus. Vivement la suite !

Vous l'aurez compris, cette série est pour moi un véritable coup de cœur. J'ai été totalement embarquée dans l'univers d'Amanda Carlson et maintenant j'en redemande. C'est une série très addictive alors si vous ne la connaissez pas encore, dépêchez-vous de vous la procurer, ça vaut vraiment le détour ! (less)

Avec Sang nouveau, j'ai enfin retrouvé un livre de Bit-lit addictif. J'ai lu ce livre d'une seule traite, tenu en haleine par une histoire passionnante et des personnages attachants. Ce livre est le meilleur dans son genre depuis Mercy Thompson de Patricia Briggs (qui parlait déjà de loup-garou et de meute).
Plus que l'histoire ou même les personnages, c'est l'univers que nous décrit Amanda Carlson qui m'a conquis. Les relations entre les différents surnaturels créent un échiquier géopolitique complexe. Une situation qui impacte sur les décisions de chacun et renforce l'aspect dramatique de l'histoire.
Jessica arrive dans ce monde rigide, aux règles strictes, comme un chien dans un jeu de quilles. Elle bouleverse l'ordre établi et provoque une réorganisation qu'on ne peut qu'imaginer à ce stade de l'histoire. Elle est courageuse et fière, et on s'attache rapidement à elle.
Comme souvent dans les livres de Bit-lit, la romance n'est pas oubliée. Amours impossibles et rivalités amoureuses sont bien présentes dans ce premier tome sans pour autant monopoliser l'action. Ce dernier point est très important pour moi car je trouve que malheureusement dans les livres de Bit-Lit le décorum fantastique est trop souvent utilisé pour nous proposer un enchaînement de scènes chaudes au détriment de l'histoire.
Pour conclure, Sang nouveau est une belle réussite. Que ça va être long d'attendre la suite des aventures de Jessica... Courez vite l'acheter, vous ne le regretterez pas ! (sortie le 10 avril 2013)

Not only now does other wolves want her but a higher supernatural being is interested in her. I loved Jessica’s character. She is kick butt, but not over the top. She has feelings and is confused as anyone would be since she never thought she would ever shift. She is witty and can hold her own in a fight. I loved how she can picture her wolf in her head and actually see what her wolf is doing. Her wolf gets agitated easy, wants let loose at the worst possible moments to fight and even mate a certain someone. This leads to some great moments when Jessica has to try to reason with and talk down her wolf in her head. I love Jessica’s relationship with her father who is Alpha of their pack and her brother. Since she shifted she can now mind talk with her dad and brother. Love those times as they are personal and poor Jessica can now get a good butt chewing not coming from her Alpha but as her father.

Loving those yummy alpha male secondary characters. You got her brother, best friend, a few pack mates on her side, James who is her dads right hand wolf and of course the sexy Werecat Rourke. James still do not know much about him but from the little I found out I think he is safe. Now Rourke.. oh my he is delicious and mysterious. There is more to Rourke then what he portrays and the rumors about him being dangerous and do not tick him off is just a front. Why correct rumors when they make everyone scared of him. Did not get all the goods on Rourke but just enough to where I can not wait to read more novels to unravel his mysterious side. At one point before Jessica meets Rourke he says some sexy graphic stuff to her in her mind. But we never know what he say’s, just a little bit of what she is repeating out loud. I do want to know what he was saying to her.

The plot was good and the world building was done just right. Amanda Carlson nailed it with just the right amount of world building. It is not over done and little by little she gives you a little more of this amazing world she has created. The ending left me wanting more. There is still so much we do not know about Jessica. I look forward to reading Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain #2)

In the end, I had to grit my teeth and just read to finally cross the finish line.

What makes me want to throw this book out the window? Well, it's not just Jessica, but she's a start. I read quite a few 4 to 5 star reviews praising this novel. It was supposed to be up there with Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels. I feel completely misled. I didn't find Jessica to be an independent strong woman. I found her whiny and cowardly. Her wolf had spunk, but she rarely let her wolf have her way. Always backing down from a fight or running away. That was tedious and annoying. She grew up living with werewolves. Yet she knows next to nothing about them. They are so secretive that the Alpha's daughter is left in the dark. It seems highly improbable that she wouldn't know anything useful at all.

Another thing that got me? It was okay for other wolves to openly abuse Jessica while growing up. It was okay for wolves to mistreat, verbally and maybe even physically abuse The Alpha's daughter. Am I the only one who thought that this would never fly? What kind of over protective father lets those he's supposed to be in control over do this? The openness of it bothered me quite a bit. The implication, that is never really gone into, that she had to physically fight her way out of the compound, when she isn't even a werewolf (at the time)seems odd to me. I could see quiet discontent. I could see ostracizing her. I could see many minor ways to let her know that they do not approve of her, but in the end, I had a hard time thinking the most powerful Alpha in the world would let open abuse of his human daughter go unchecked and unpunished.

Trash talk. Most books have it. I appreciate good trash talk. This book was flooded with tons of it. It was no longer something to be amused by. By the end of the book I wanted all the talking to end. It seemed that the author was incapable of showing her readers what was going on, or leading up to it so it all just clicked. Instead, for every fight scene we have a Scooby Doo villain break down of what they are doing and why they are doing it. So we don't get the good and bloody fight scenes, we get a full confession right before the fight. All that did for me was to kill any sort of anticipation of the fight or scene. Killed it.

I'm glad to see that I'm a minority in thinking this book wasn't up to snuff. I really am. There are very few good werewolf books out there. I'm still seeking another good series to follow. This, for me, was a complete and utter dud. While I feel I have completely wasted the last few days reading this, I'm glad there are others out there who like this one. I won't be trying this one again.(less)

Overall, I really liked this book; it was a good start to a series I will be sure to follow. I loved the world that Carlson created, and the plot was great. I really liked the characters -- I want to steal James for myself *grin*.
