Walking on Air takes place in 1931, during the depths of the Great Depression. June narrates. She is a 12 year old down-to-earth girl who can walk on tightropes and quote the Scripture like some kind of spiritual savant.

Alfred, her pa, is an extreme preacher. You know the kind: supremely stubborn and obsessed with saving souls. He's a book banner, child slapping sexist. He is as ineffective at saving souls as he is at saving money.

Pa moves June and her Ma from state to state, making new enemies

The book seemed to jump around a lot. Like at one point June’s dad is arrested for six months and the next day they're able to find a house. Also, the description said it takes place during the Great Depression but, never really mentioned the Great Depression in it. Also, the main charcter, June, never seemed to age even though it took place probably over more than a year.

I liked this book very much. It was about how poor this family is, but how they make it through everything. Apparently they are going through the time of Depression in America. All the while, they travel to diff. states, the father, June, her mother, and this man named Rhett who doesn't talk. Times get really hard and June questions herself on whether s ...more

Recommends it for: anyone
This beautifully written book is about a girl walking the tightrope in her father's travelling evangelical show. It's about being an artist and about finding your own god in a world where religion is used to control others. The bible is woven through in a witty way.
