It rarely crosses my mind, but in theory (reality is a different story) I live with a predator with very efficient weapons and methods for killing.

Mooncheese mostly sleeps though, and she is scared of unknown things and is more likely to run up to you and rub up against you than to do anything that would cause anything harm, but somewhere she has all the instincts needed to dispatch small prey with a ruthlessness we'd call sadistic if a human acted in such a manner.

The first of maybe many aside...more

Gordon Grice’s treatise, The Book of Deadly Animals, reads a little bit like a season of “When Animals Attack”. The stories will have you rethinking that African safari you wanted to take; that Alaskan cruise; that Australian surfing vacation; or even a trip to the shed in your own yard.

From lions to alligators, hyenas, sharks and cockroaches, Grice takes readers on a fascinating tour through the animal kingdom. He doesn’t just recount the stories of attacks but...(read the rest of my review HER...more

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, disturbing though it is. Full of facts to creep you out, all told with a hint of twisted humor--just a hint. Not only is it not safe to go in the water, it is not safe to drink it, or to eat anything, pet anything, walk anywhere, or stay in bed. Makes you want to turn into Monk. For heaven's sake, don't go to a zoo or get a pet or go on safari! Of course, guess who turns out to be the deadliest animal of all? Hint: It walks on two legs. That ending turned out...more

Good book--but you have to be into negative relationships between animals and people--they bite us, give us diseases, poison us, trample us, and the list goes on. Got this book, because it was recommended by David Sedarus when we saw him in Wilmington. Great performance, and I actually enjoyed the book. It makes me glad to be a meagan.

Recommended by David Sedaris, this book explains the obvious risks (lions, tigers, bears...oh my) and the not so obvious (flies, pigs, birds). The chapter on primates makes it clear these animals should never be pets...and the chapter on elephants makes it clearER that 'mastery' of these animals is a slippery crown to wear.

Scary! Thanks Jack, now I can't sleep. Had I written it I would have started with the subtly dangerous beasties and worked my way up to the vicious crescendo of maneaters... That's just me.
Laura
Interesting, but not my kind of thing.
I picked this up after David Sedaris recommended it during his show.
Lots of gory detail! Lots of stupid people!

This book was a suggestion from Mr. Sedaris. I picked it up and now know how scary all of the animal kingdom can be if you are near them.
Beverly
This may make you rethink your next vacation. Even a petting zoo can have its pitfalls. My facination with monkeys will remain from afar, I will keep with a dog thankyou very much.

I loved this book! I learned a lot but I also learned too much

It is what it sounds like: an encyclopedia of the ways in which various kinds of animals can hurt or kill people. Some highlights: elephants (skull crushing), worms (revolting!), and hyenas (may randomly bite your hand or genitals off while you are sleeping). The lively and personal writing style along with fascinating anecdotes keeps things moving.
Shana Dennis
The way the author recounts the facts and incidents of animal attack/defense really sells this book. I also like how he has interjected his own experiences with the many kinds of animals he showcases.
Caitlin
I'm not sure I saw the "signature dark comic style" that the publishers promised, but this was still exactly the kind of thing my trivial brain needs from time to time. Now to begin grossing people out with factoids!
Kyle
Apparently every animal can and will kill you. Interesting so far.
Brad
Animals eating people. A guilty pleasure, yes, but what's not to love? Grice's dry sense of humor makes it all the more fun.
Mary Schroeder
at once chilling and familiar. however, my interest flagged about 1/3 into book. have abandoned or now.
Adela
Fabulous overview of all animals. A thrilling, and compelling guide to wildlife.
Michael
GRRRReat! (Or at least very well researched and fascinating...)
Kristi

Love these sorts of gory, fast-paced books.
