Bruce Duffy's first novel, The World As I Found It, was universally acclaimed as "astonishing," "spectacular," "vivid, passionate and funny." A dream debut, it raised the stakes for his second book irrationally high. To his credit, Duffy decided to write an entirely different story, a book that is tender, compassionate, vaguely autobiographical, set squarely in the ...more

"'Last Comes the Egg'' is a tender, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story as well as a finely wrought tale of family dysfunction...

Here, in the section devoted to their flight, 'Last Comes the Egg' reveals that its true antecedent is the great American novel of adolescence, 'Huckleberry Finn.' Just as Twain's novel employed the language and consciousness of a marginal man-child to reveal the corruption of a slave-owning society that believed itself 'sivilized,' so does 'Last Comes the Egg'

a stunning novel by the most fantastic author Duffy. About a 12 year old who takes a road trip. sound huckish? wull it's cuz it is. but way better than i could ever explicate, but just a wonderful wonderful novel of how usa is (it really hasn't changed much in these first 200 years, we are still a quivering, myopic bully hitting out at friends and enemies alike, not really "someone" you want to hang out with huh? sheesh)

Novel by Bruce Duffy [The World as I Found It]. A story from the eyes of an incredibly perceptive sensitive, but oh-so-real 12 year old boy. Some magic realism of a subtle sort. Set in Maryland suburbs of DC, 1960s. Flat out wonderful writing.

Bruce Duffy is the author of the autobiographical novel Last Comes the Egg (1997), and—to appear June 2011— Disaster Was My God, a novel based on the life and work of the poet Arthur Rimbaud. An only child raised in a Catholic middle-class family in suburban Maryland, Duffy sees the 1962 death of his mother—essentially by medical malpractice— as what pushed him to be a writer.
