So, I personally don't normally read historical fiction books. I just prefer YA fiction over most other books. So, I'm not going to be reviewing it like any other book. I am going to review it like a historical fiction book compared to other historical fiction books.

Being a fan of Japanese culture and political history, I gave this book a try and I’m glad I did. It’s about a Japanese-American family living in Seattle after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As their country goes to war, the world turns on them: neighbors vandalize their house, FBI agents search their possessions and finally they are whisked to Japanese internment camps, a dark stain on America’s history. It reminded me of George Takei’s experience in the camps that he spoke o...more

This novel is about a young Japanese girl and her family living in the state of Washington during and after the Pearl Harbor attack. It is a perspective I've never imagined. I'm not going to get into the summary extensively but the characters were a fun read.
Mary's family, the Tanakas, are a loving hard working family until everything is stripped from them. It's a sad tale of being accused, singled out, and practically ostracized.

“American Girl” is a riveting and engrossing YA novel (quite enjoyable for adult readers too) told from the point of view of a Nisei girl turning sixteen on Dec. 7, 1941-the day of the fatal bombing at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Mary Tanaka, her older brother Ichiro (stationed at Pearl Harbor), and her younger brother Kenichi, are Nisei: American-born, while their parents are Issei, of Japanese birth and not allowed to become American citizens. But Mary, Kenichi’s, and Ichiro’s American citizenship b...more
Great book. The author did a good job of showing us what it's like to grow up American and then have your identity suddenly challenged because of war, prejudice and the cruelty of others. This novel transports the reader back to a time when Japanese Americans were suddenly made persona non grata after the Pearl Harbor attack. But Pearl Harbor didn't just impact the lives of adults, it also changed the lives of children who were born in America. The author does an excellent job of telling this st...more
American Girl is a thought-provoking book.
Being Australian, I didn't study American history at school and my study of the World Wars were skewed to cover mostly the Australian stories and experiences. The happenings in America and other areas of the world were briefly covered, but not in any great detail. So this book introduced me to what it might have been like for the Japanese during the war.
Sometimes I drew strong comparisons between myself and Mary Tanaka (the main character of the book),...more
