I discovered Naoki Urasawa in an issue of Big Comic Spirits at a used bookstore almost twenty years ago. The series was called "Happy!". Urasawa had been illustrating for years at that point. His skill was breathtaking and I was more than a little intimidated by it. I've never read Yawara—his first series—so it is both comforting to see his skill was no where near the level of Happy! and still intimidating because he was so very good right out of the starting gate.

Urasawa's work often concentrates on intricate plotting, interweaving narratives, a deep focus on character development and psychological complexity. Urasawa has won the Shogakukan Manga Award, the Japan Media Arts Festival ex
