I LOVE Jane Austen- I try to read her once a year. Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are true classics, and Emma and Persuasion are also wonderful. I cannot personally stand Fanny Price from Mansfield Park, but even a so-so Jane Austen is better than your average bestseller today.

Austen's ability to expose the foibles of her characters without actually holding them in disdain is what makes her books so enjoyable. Can you eviscerate someone with a fluffy knife? Not a More...

I had a hard time getting into this book until I remembered that the movie Clueless is based on Emma. Is that sad? Haha. But really, each new chapter would throw me off because usually a whole new story line would start up, or the story line would shift widely that I couldn't always keep everything and everyone straight. Then when I had the epiphany it got me into the book, because I was always like, ooh, who is Mrs. Weston supposed to be? (Dionne?) Or how are they going to make Mr. Churchill un More...

Okay, hands down, Jane Austen is a genius! Who, on this earth and at the tender age of 21, could write a book as brilliant as Pride and Prejudice? I don’t think I know many people – let alone 21 year olds – who have such a deep understanding of the inner workings of human nature and character and who are then able to portray that understanding in to words on paper so beautifully and perfectly like Jane Austen did in her books – especially Pride and Prejudice. But we certainly cannot forget the g More...

Pride and Prejudice (five stars)

Persuasion (three stars)
I enjoyed this one, perhaps because it wasn't quite as obvious how everything would play out (not the ending, but how it would get there). enjoyable!

Emma (four stars)
I really enjoyed this... I think I can connect to Emma the best out of all the Jane Austen heroines I've met so far, at least as far as personality, not necessarily matchmaking. And can understand things blowing up in your face and regretti More...

I decided to read this "Sense and Sensibility" after watching the 3 hour BBC version. I had watched the Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Emma Thompson version years ago and enjoyed it. I wanted to find which one was the closest to the book. Though Jane Austen's writing is harder for me to read, I thoroughly enjoy the outcome. I needed a dictionary handy as I went through, but I love the character development and seeing how two sisters handle pain differently. Marianne thinks Elinor kno More...

Emma- Read May 2011 *(3 stars)

While I found Emma (the novel) a bit tedious in sections, it is not without the wit, joy, blunders, heartbreak and love that you can find in all of Austen's novels. Emma (the character) is lovable, but naive, and one can be easily frustrated by her meddling and immaturity. However, she is not so exasperating as to not want her to grow and learn from her mistakes. She believes herself an expert in other's feelings and triumphs in "successes" of More...

Do yourself a favor and go read "Pride and Prejudice." Seriously. It will sweep you away. People think the Stephanie Meyer books are good? Pfft. They obviously need to go read a real romance, not a YA romance masquerading as vampire lit.

After reading "Pride and Prejudice," though, do yourself another favor and don't bother with the rest of Jane Austen's novels. P&P is the pinnacle of her literary talent, and unfortunately most of her other novels have the sa More...

"It is a truth universally acknowledged..." Those words hit my ear, my mouth starts to water and my body settles into adventure with the bold, intelligent Elizabeth Bennett, and the strong, silent, yummy Mr. Darcy. People coming hither, going thither. Could life be better? Not on this planet.

My edition of the complete novels was printed in the early 50's. It is heavy. The spine is broken, bits of cardboard are left on every surface. The pages are yellowed on the edges, but More...

I decided to read all the books that Jane Austen wrote. I even read some of her Juvenilia work called Love and Friendship and The History of England.

My favorite book from Austen is by far Persuasion. This is a great book. I loved it because it teaches you to make and stick with your first feelings. Don't take into account what other people think. The book that I liked the least was Northanger Abbey. Her writing style changed with this one. It was too much of a mystery type and gave re More...

Jane Austin is one of my all time favorite authors. I have adored every single novel of hers!! Even though she is a classical author, her books are in no way stuffy or hard reads. She questions such topical themes as her titles suggest "pride and prejudice" and "sense and sensibility" with such wonderful humor and such passionate and extravagant characters. Her novels are always fun to read, hard to put down, and leave you wanting more. I'd recommend ANY Jane Austin boo More...

My all tme favourites, what more can I say.

An absolute pleasure to read, so detailed in the way people thought, which in all honestly is not much different to the thinking of today. Jane Austen women especially Elizabeth Bennett had the qualities I would admire in any woman today, she would notbe attracted to money alone, she would marry for love.
So too would Anne Elliott.

Everyone should get a chance to read Jane Austen, never dated because the ideas are still pret More...

I got this anthology for a class and I thought it might be easier to put this up rather than each Jane Austen novel. I really liked it, and it's portable being a normal sized paperback; just thicker. But since I love Jane Austen, this is perfect for me! I really like Sense and Sensability the best, of course, followed by Pride and Prejudice. Emma, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey were good as well, but this is a great way to read all of her works without a large hardback anthology that is More...

I'm currently reading Sense and Sensibility from this lovely book "Jane Austen: Seven Novels" from the Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics series and I love it!

I all ready knew I loved Jane Austen and was looking for a nice looking compilation book, then I found this edition. It is made out of leather and has a wonderful artistic design of flowers, it really is visually stunning. The novels included in this edition are: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield More...

I love these books because they are easy to read and they are "written at walking pace". What I mean by that is, the pace of life when these books were being written was much more gently, and you can feel this rythm in the writing. It instantly transports you this other time. Sometimes it's nice to slow down , and take in the minutae of your surroundings. Also Miss Austen was an unsupressable romantinc and optimist, with a wonderful grounding of common sense. Many a young woman could l More...

Jane Austen indulges us with a glimpse into life in the 1700’s. An unhurried picturesque time full of formality and measurably sensible people. A time in which love is romanticized and subsequent to position and wealth, a time in which a favorable marriage means the difference between prosperity and ruin. Fortuitously for us Austen gives our heroines love and wealth. Devilishly delightful read for all those hopeless romantics at heart waiting for that ONE BIG LOVE. Definitely a complete must hav More...

My goal for the summer was to re-read Jane Austen's novels in their entirety. And I'm happy to say, I'm finished. It's been some time since I sat down to read any of her novels. I've probably watched the movies more than I've actually sat down to read them. I know many people do an annual reading of her works. I'm not sure I could do that - but would instead place them into the "read these books at different times of your life" category.

It always amazes me how these More...

In college, I got the crazy idea to join a book club. Crazy, I know. I think it had a lot to do with the professor, actually. I had, and still do have, a lot of respect for Dr. Haggerty, so I thought it would be a great chance to get some more interaction with him. Did I have the ulterior motive of a letter of recommendation in the back of my mind? Maybe. But that's besides the point. Jane Austen is Jane Austen. It's the chick lit of yesteryear. Not exactly my cup of tea, but still wort More...

I have rather mixed feelings about the resurgence of Austen's popularity in the 1990s. Selfishly, I rather relished that it was my secret that "classics" of the kind that could be assigned in school could be such a pleasure to read, such a winning blend of social satire, humor and romance. I've read a lot of genre novels recently, as well as rereading Austen, and what struck me is what separates classics, why they endure, is rather than quickly feeling dated, they still feel relevant a More...

Mansfield Park:

Of the Jane Austen novels I have read thus far, this was my least favorite. The character of Franny is just too righteous when compared to Elizabeth Bennet or Marianne Dashwood. Though I realize that author's have the freedom to create differences in their characters, this seems to be more than that. As I was reading the novel, it did not seem to be written by the same woman who wrote Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, or even Persuasion. The characters are fl More...

I have a rather large book that contains “The Complete Novels” of Jane Austen. I am slowly, but surely making my way through its pages. I’ve already visited the Bennets and the Dashwoods, so next up are the Bertrams of “Mansfield Park”. MP was recently broadcast on PBS as part of its Masterpiece Classic series. I really enjoyed this story in its video version, so I was looking forward to reading it in the words of its author. As always, the book was better than the movie.

with Mansfield park and persuasion they were a good read at the time but not something I would keep reading

Loving Jane Austen as I do I was thrilled when my daughter surprised me with a copy of her complete novels. If you enjoy the weight of a book in your hands, and you love Jane Austen, this is the book for you.

There are two characteristics of Jane Austen's novels which I find particularly endearing. One is that the protagonists always behave in a manner which is entirely honorable. The other is that moment of climax, when all hope for a happy ending seems to have slipped through their fingers, resolved in an instant of serendipity. The connection between these two characteristics is what gives Austen's novels their moral strength and romantic appeal.

Regardless of whatever personal faults o More...

I've spent a semester getting through this massive volume (for a class, I should say), and I figure I'll do mini-reviews for each novel rather than anything similarly massive. So let's give it a whirl.

Sense and Sensibility: This is actually the only Austen novel I've read on multiple occasions, so I have a bit more familiarity with it than any of the other five. This is, in my humble opinion, a fairly dark novel for Austen. Marianne's melodrama is of course frequently mocked, but More...
