When Bobby Kincaid is walking the slackline – a narrow, flat webbed rope stretched between two anchor points – he offers a silent gift of beauty to the air and sky. Making peace with the world is one reason he’s drawn to the seastacks off Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Colin Rose, the Olympic skier who pushed Bobby away after a horrific accident two years earlier, is another. ...more

The main attraction for me when reading this short was the setting of the Orkney Islands. I have family and friends in Orkney and so I was looking forward to seeing what the author did with the setting. Not a right lot as it turned out, unless you count the warmth of the Scots people and a description of a thatched cottage as part of the setting, but this was still a very enjoyable story about lost love and recovering from injury.

A short glimpse in the life of two men who should have been together, but accident and pride got in the way. Bobby takes a gamble by going to Scotland where Colin now lives as well as slacklining over the North Sea. He falls down and right back in Colin's life. Like always, Sarah Black's writing was beautiful, but the story left me wanting more. While the men started the relationship, I still wanted to know how they worked out some things. If the author decides to revisit these two guys some ...more

I really enjoyed this short story of Bobby and Colin. I particularly liked the descriptions of Bobby and his slacklining - why he does it, what it means to him, etc. The interplay with Bobby and Colin who have both suffered physical injuries doing the thing they love best was very well done. I would love to see more of these two, but I did like the open ending - we can all create our own endings!

I enjoyed this story about an injured slackline and the "one that got away" reconnecting. The descriptions of the injuries and why he walked the slackline were really good and I quiet enjoyed seeing the two men reconnect, even though they barely did the first time they'd been dating. And yay, no "you're nearly in a coma but lets have sex anyway" sex.
One of the best short stories I've read in a long time. Great setting, excellent pacing, interesting detail and sympathetic characters. 4.5 stars

I actually have NO IDEA what slackline is and have to look at Google image to give me an idea and image in my head. As always, this is another lovely story from Sarah Black.

Albeit short, the story of two men reconnecting gives such comfortable feeling for me to read. True, I am a bit annoyed that Colin reconnects with Bobby AFTER Bobby has his accident, instead of before ... simply because Colin thinks they were not in equal footing previously. BUT, at the same time Colin does admit that Bobby

Enjoyable short about 2 men who were just starting a relationship when Colin is injured and pushed Bobby away.
But when Bobby is injured in a Slacklining accident not far from Colin's Scottish home, the relationship is rekindled.
I enjoyed this story, but really, really wish it could have been longer!!!!
