To others, he was the American President, one of the most powerful men in the world, presiding over one of the most horrific wars in history. But to Julia Taft, he was Tad Lincoln's father. Invited to the White House to watch over her two brothers, who were playmates of the Lincolns' sons, Julia had an intimate perspective on the First Family's home life, which she describ ...more

I have been looking for this book for some time and finally found a copy at the Library! I was not disappointed. As a 16 year old girl, Julia Taft had a unique seat to a most important time in US history. Her parents were what today would be described as a Washington "power-couple". They were also sympathetic to the Lincoln's outsider status in Washington. As such, they were regular guests at the White House. And Julia was asked to keep her eye on her younger brothers as they played with Tad and ...more

A quick easy read in which Julia Taft Bayne reminisces on her experiences befriending the two Lincoln boys, and their parents, during the first year or so of Abraham Lincoln's tenure in the White House.

Be warned though, this was written in 1931 by a woman who was 16 in 1861, so there's some racial stuff that's seriously squicky and uncomfortable to the modern reader. However, it's worth slogging through it to read about Julia barging into a noisy room to find her two brothers and the two Lincoln

bought the paperback. I enjoyed this woman's diary of Abraham Lincoln from her childhood memories. It is so interesting to know Lincoln from a personal perspective, even if it is shaded by the author's time and bias. It is also very interesting to see how security wasn't really needed by the White House, until several events caused it to be mandatory. The book is not that large, but easily read, filled with feeling, and heart felt memories. I was transported with Julia, to her visits and felt as ...more

A warm, human story

As someone who has sought to understand the human Lincoln, I found this account of a young girl's encounters with him to be honest, revealing and heart warming.

I enjoyed the read. Surprisingly Tad Lincoln's Father (Abraham Lincoln) is not mentioned a whole lot in the book. It's more of an autobiography of Julia Taft during the years Lincoln was in office.

Research reading for me. An interesting angle, written by a young friend of the Lincolns, and a quick read.

Different view of the family dynamics of the Lincolns plus good historical information
