Bear Grylls
Bear Grylls is a man who has always sought the ultimate in adventure. Growing up on the Isle of Wight, he was taught by his father to sail and climb at an early age. Inevitably, it wasn't long before Bear was leading out-of-bounds night-climbing missions at school.
As a teenager, he found identity and purpose through both mountaineering and martial arts, which led the young...more

An interesting book. A good insight into the life of one of the inspirational characters for millions of people (scouts and others). I found the style and pace of the book great and if it hadn't been for the need to go to bed so I was able to get up for work the next day I could have easily read on through the night. It is one of the few books that I have read recently that I can say this for. The chapters are short, but over 100 of them. This is fine as it lets you take a break and think before...more
I chose to read this book because I am a big fan of Bear Grylls's show Man vs Wild and I thought it would be very interesting to read this book. It fills in the 'autobiography' box on the bingo board.
My favourite quote in his book is: “I learnt another valuable lesson that night: listen to the quiet voice inside. Intuition is the noise of the mind.” This is a very wise quote coming from a man who sets himself to do stupid things. This quote teaches people that your instincts are what you can tr...more

"Life continues to be an adventure, and in many ways more so than ever. I have had to learn to prioritize clearly in my life: to be safe, get home fast, and keep it fun - the rest is detail."
In Mud, Sweat and Tears: The Autobiography of Bear Grylls, I was inspired to pick this one up after reading a short article in Guideposts magazine about the life of the man we all know from his television show, Man vs. Wild on the Discovery Channel. At first, it came across as being poorly written technically. But as the book wore on, I realized that he intended the book to come across as if he were speaking to an audience, not writing a book. Once I recognized his style, I appreciated the book for what it was and thoroughly liked it. Plenty of stories which add color to Bear and what made him who he is today. His values come through strongly. Amazing to think of what he accomplished. I wish he gave more details on his SAS qualification but...more
This book is amazing. I picked it up from the library because I assumed that an autobiography of Bear would be pretty easy holiday reading. I was right, in so far as I whipped through this book in three days of reading on planes and before bed, but it's not a particularly light and fluffy book. I was amazed at the physicality of the things that Bear has done, but I was also shocked by how self-reflective and well spoken Bear Grylls is. This book is not a piece of high literary style, but it's ho...more
I bought this book for my sons, but when he put it down I grabbed it and began reading it. Apart from the mud, sweat and tears, there is a lot of clear, unpopular truth in this book , like, you have to work hard for your dreams, and guess what it will hurt - not all the tender warm and fuzzy nonsense that would have you believe that you can attract what you want by thinking about it, and the 'Universe' will bring it to you..(Gag). Of course, I like Man vs Wild and Bear Grylls, but I wouldn't for...more
Bear Grylls, the famous adventurer, will never cease to impress. My expectations, which were very high, were fulfilled and exceeded far beyond any limit.
The most humble, modest man doesn't seem at all changed from his new role as a celebrity. He tends to shun away from any kind of publicity and declined the offer to be the main star of "Man vs Wild" three times, before finally accepting to shoot a pilot, something he hasn't regretted, I'm sure. The thing with people like Bear is that you really...more

Bear Grylls is the action and adventure star of the popular TV series MAN vs WILD. Normally, I probably would not have picked this book off the eBook shelf, but somebody said to me that it is a good read – so I thought why not! And it is a great book!
Bear Grylls is such a good story-teller! I found myself unable to put down his autobiography! Bear has inherited some interesting genes from strong characters in his family. He has been thrown in the deep end from an early age, when he was sent to b...more

I really enjoyed this book.
It starts with Bear's childhood and goes all the way up to I guess current time.
It's full of adventure and endurance, self-discipline, extremely hard training and the willingness to go against fear and take (somewhat crazy, but lessons learned) risks. He really has done a lot of living and traveling in his life! Not to mention climb a lot of rooftops and trees while at Eaton - I was really surprised about that.

I bought this book on a recent midnight trip to Tesco's as it was of a low price and I've always been a big fan of Bear Grylls since his TV arrival.
The book itself didn't disappoint me and I found it to be a very inspiring book and Grylls covered a lot of different aspects of his life in which made you see who he really is behind the cameras during his adventures. After reading this book I just want to give Bear a nice warm cup of tea, a cuddly blanket and let him rest for a minute.
The man is a true inspiration! This book follows his journey through childhood, the teen years and into early adulthood. From boarding school to the Special Forces to climbing Everest at 23 years old!

It's not really an autobiography although it does on the surface look back over Bear's life to date. The main focus and the meat of the book deals with him going through SAS Reserve selection (really excellent this part) and then climbing Everest having come back from a parachuting accident that broke the vertebrae in his back (not as interesting having read several similar tales). There are a hundred odd 'chapters' that are literally 2 to 3 pages each which makes the book an incredibly easy rea...more
I was on my way home back to England from visiting my mum and family in Scotland and took a peek in WH Smiths at the airport to see if I could find a decent read for the short plane ride home, and in so doing, discovered this book. My knowledge of Bear Grylls (Edward) up to that point was rather superficial and came from watching his show "Man vs Wild". I was intrigued by his character and wanted to unearth the back story that such a man would have in order to drive him to do such extreme and da...more
"Grylls is fit, enthusiastic, but needs to watch out because he isn't too happy-go-lucky." I really liked this quote (which was on page 63) because I felt like the whole story of Bear Gryll's life was about to start. Bear really felt proud of himself and kept that quote close to his heart. These kinds of quotes really empower the person's future, especially Bear, how he lives on to becoming a world famous survival adventurer who encounters dangerous environments few would survive. Millions of pe...more
This is a book like no other. Extremely candid and inspirational, I recommend this book to any one who admires Bear or is looking for some soul food. Although the prose is a bit weak at times (Bear wrote it during his flights),it still shines for its honesty. The memoir reaches an astonishing high when Bear discusses his SAS days where he manages to break into the elite commando unit on his second attempt. And oh yes, in between he manages to be one of the youngest karate champion, climb the Mt...more
This is the definitive book for those who want to look behind the persona of Bear Grylls of “Man V/s Wild” fame.
The biography covers his childhood days, the schooling days, his training as a British Army Commando, the Mount Everest climb and his shooting for the Man V/s Wild TV series which made him a worldwide phenomenon and a household name.
Throughout the whole book the readers will be exposed to the adventurous streak of Bear Grylls and his ability to stretch himself to the extremes of physic...more

This was such an inspirational read. Everything was so detailed, even the part about the SAS (even though he signed a life confidential agreement about not talking about the SAS) I just felt like I was on that same adventure with him.
His whole life I felt like I was in his shoes. Bear Grylls shares his adventures in such an inspirational and heartfelt way. It is not often that you get to read about someone with such extraordinary skills and stories; it is also such a delight to find an honest a...more

I have immensely enjoyed reading this book but not for its literary form more for the point that Bear Grylls can clearly relate and express who he honesty is without too wankerish or jockcular which I think is why tv audiences rate him so highly. It does read aloud at times as if Bear is giving the voiceover himself in your mind.

Let's be honest - the only reason people tune into this show is to watch Bear doing something incredibly gross like drinking his own pee or consuming elephant dung for breakfast. Frankly, I would rather die peacefully in the shade than follow his embarrassing survival tips.
However, this book is nothing like the show. The highlight for me was his honest account of how desperate he was to get a job - including writing 23 rejected letters to Sir Richard Branson - and even turning up on his doorstep...more

While this book is clearly not a work of literary genius, it is certainly an interesting (and easy) read. Bear Grylls is just such an interesting guy. He seems to be missing some sort of risk evaluation component in his psyche, but as well as that he seems to be overendowed with brassiness and determination. The whole book (i.e. his life) is virtually an illustration of the SAS saying 'Who dares wins'. His Christian profession is also interesting. His life is hardly one of exemplary Christian li...more

I'm not a fan of Bear Grylls television series so I had few expectations for this book. I was surprised to find I really enjoyed it and at times found it hard to put down! It takes a little getting used to as he writes in very short chapters, but I think this actually helps with the flow of the book and doesn't give you a chance to get bored.

While this book won't win any prizes for literary content, it moves and inspires you to make the most of life, live it to the full and not waste your precious time on this earth. Bear's passion for adventure and love of life is infectious and to be applauded. His tenacity, determination and self-awareness in the face of extreme challenges is truly admirable and provide us all with valuable life lessons.

Although the nowaday documentaries on Discovery Channel are loosing credibility and personally don't like the exaggerated touch of drama I picked the book after coming across by coincidence.

I picked this book up for the drive, determination and inspiration - it did not disappoint me ! Bear wrote this book with obvious heart - in no way does he come off your typical gun-toting jock mentality, and in fact he allows the reader to see his "average-ness"....he never lets on that he was a star athlete, and in fact puts himself down a few times when it comes to intelligence (although I'm not sure I'd agree with him on those points)....but his raw determination, passion and love for the ou...more
I loved this book. It is a big book and there's a lot of story to tell but it flowed fairly well so it wasn't too hard to read and in fact I couldn't put it down, I read it all in one night.
Some parts of the story were slower like his childhood years, and some parts were a bit rushed like how he came to get into his TV series etc. which may have lost some stars except that his life story is AMAZING and he's a REALLY good storyteller and he's really funny! It was over the Spring and Summer that I read this book, then went back to it, recently... Written By Bear, with Excerpts from his other works (Facing Up, being one of them) it is based on Bear's life and the influences, inspirations and interests of this remarkable young man. He is himself an inspiration to Children, youth and young Parents all over the world (http://myordinaryeverydays.blogspot.c...)

Good book, interesting to hear of his earlier years. I liked the informal style of the writing, and how he told his story using a series of anecdotes and lessons learned. It was light-hearted, and funny, in parts. However, I did not like the prologue to the book, which was melodramatic. His attempt to draw the reader in did not work with me, and I was tempted to give up on the book. It did get off to a slow start, but the rest is intriguing. It was an easy read (hence, I breezed through it). The...more
This is an inspirational book.
I have read a number of Autobiographies over the years, but this particular book has to be one of the most sincere, and heartfelt, that I have ever encountered. I haven't been a fan of Bear Grylls for particularly long. The book was bought as a gift by my Wife who saw the chance to buy a copy for an aggressively low price as a part of a High Street promotion.

I am currently reading this aloud to my 13 year old son. It's a perfect read aloud for boys this age. Bear has a positive, faith-filled outlook about life and its challenges, is a great example for my son who is, like Bear, "not the academic type". :) The first few chapters are slow as Bear talks about his grandparents, parents, etc., but it picks up very quickly. There are a very few parts I slightly "edited" as I read aloud, as the book is not written with an audience of children in mind. (Thi...more

Every year the death toll on Mount Everest rises, and for every ten mountaineers who make it to the top, one will die. Yet at 7:22AM on May 26th 1998, Bear Grylls entered The Guinness Book of Records as the youngest, and one of only around thirty, British climbers to have successfully climbed Everest and returned alive. He was only 23 years old.
