Panina Manina, a trapeze artist, falls and breaks her neck. As the ringmaster bends over her, he sees around her neck an amber charm—just like the one he gave his own child before she was swept away in a torrent 16 years earlier. This tale is narrated by Petter, a precocious child and a fantasist, and perhaps Jostein Gaarder’s most intriguing creation since Sophie. Petter

If you aren't a Jostein Gaarder's fan , you might probably not like this one very much.

This is a very well written book . Jostein always takes us to a very unique place where we dream under kinda a vanilla sky!

There are many stories in this novel narrated in his astonishing way .

Gaarder is one of my very fav. authors , but this one can't be compared with Sophie's World or The Solitaire Mystery.

Still, am gonna read each and every book he wrote that i can find.
I just love this man !

Satu lagi novel karya penulis Norwegia, Jostein Gaarder, Putri Sirkus dan Lelaki Penjual Dongeng (seterusnya disebut Putri Sirkus saja), diterjemahkan dan diterbitkan dalam bahasa Indonesia menyusul tiga novel sebelumnya : Dunia Sophie, Misteri Soliter, dan Gadis Jeruk. Jika pada dua novel pertama Jostein memasukkan kandungan filsafat yang cukup kental, maka untuk Gadis Jeruk dan Putri Sirkus nyaris tanpa bumbu filsafat, sehingga, buat pembaca awam filsafat seperti saya, lebih mudah mengunyahnya ...more

First off, a disclaimer: I'm a big fan of Jostein Gaarder. I've been enamored with his work ever since I've read the masterpiece that is Sophie's world, and I have been his constant reader ever since.

This novel stands out from Gaarder's opus. Usually his books have philosophical undertones, or philosophy is somehow strongly linked to the plot. They also include some delightful surprises, and are, in a way, didactic. If anything, they try to make the readers think about themselves and the world a

"My brain is seething. I'm bubbling with hundreds of new ideas. They just keep welling up. Before I manage to dwell on one of my inspirations, it generally melts into an even better idea, but this, too, is so fickle of character that I struggle to save it from the constant volcanic stream of new ideas..."

The Baltic Sea is well known for its amber, solidified resin from forests around 44 million years old, and frequently trapped in these deposits are various flora and fauna of the period. The most striking image in The Ringmaster’s Daughter, which symbolises one of its major themes, is of a spider caught in this matrix, just like its victims might be caught in its web. The story that gives the novel its title concerns a trapeze artist who falls and breaks her neck. As the ringmaster bends over he ...more

I read so many books by Jostein gaarder (or that is how it feels) which all gave me the same feeling that I expected all of his books to be like each other. Exactly the book I decided to read with others, is different.

The story about Petter, a storyteller, is les phylosophical than the other books. It tells about his life, the beginning of the stoy being where it also ends. He makes up amazing stories which I wish would be taken to write a complete book but as I was ready for another phylosophic

Hai Petter,
Aku membaca tentang dirimu dalam buku The Ringmaster's Daughter: Jostein Gaarder.

This is one of the most intriguing and beguiling books I have read in a long time. The narrator introduces himself in such a way that it is hard to know what is real and what is not and by the time you do it seems far from possible. The premise, a child with a fertile and overactive imagination becomes a ghost writer of plots for famous authors in his own country before fleeing possible assassination, is immediately gripping and engaging. As he retells his life story you develop a skeptical but ...more

I adore anything Gaarder. This definitely didn't disappoint.

While it may not be as centered on philosophy as Gaarder's other books are, the book still presents to us a couple of unique and quirky characters (which is almost Gaarder's characteristic trademark). Here we see Petter, a genius in making up story-lines. He is so incredibly gifted with his stories that he is able to manipulate his peers from near and far for his own purposes! His life story, which we hear from his own words, is refresh

In the past I have enjoyed reading Gaarder's work and I was looking forward to reading The Ringmasters Daughter. However, I got up to p95 and have to say I put it away. I hate not finishing a book, hate it! I will often fight to get to the end but on this occasion I just thought 'either life is too short or I am just not feeling Gaarder anymore'.

I shouldn't review a book I never finished and I suppose I won't review this fully. It is each to her/his own and other reviews give glowing accounts of

Gaarder recreates the magic of Sophie's World with a great story line combined with deep, deep thoughts. My favorite paragraph: "Watching Limelight with my mother really brought home to me the brevity of life. I realized in a little while that I would die and leave everything behind. I have long been an admirer of Jostein Gaarder's style of writing since my high school days. As a native Chinese I have read most of his works in Chinese translated editions, however under unusual circumstances I have happened to read this in its English edition and I'm glad I have done so.

As similar to Gaarder's favourite magical realism style of writing in most of his works besides philosophy, he writes a story of a story seller in this book, which is as engaging as ever. As usual I've loved

Wow, what an interesting book. And what a great writing style. I absolutely adored the way this book was written. It has quite some synopsissen and I loved reading those, it was a little short story in the book. It was quite interesting how the book had a plot and if I may say even multiple but also not. The start made sure you were reading towards a certain moment and in the book different subjects came together. But it was also just someone's extraordinarry lifestory. I think this book was jus ...more

A whimsical novel about a man so overbrimming with ideas, conceits if you like, for novels that he has to unburden himself to other, lesser, authors to flesh them out. A number of these synopses appear in the text, including a couple of variations on the theme of the titular 'lost' circus ringmaster's daughter, and one on game of chess played with living pieces. Playful and entertaining as Gaarder usually is, however the ending seems to be more of a surprise to the protagonist than it should, gi ...more

One of the most depressing things I have ever read. The ending was kind of hopeful, with the way it was left hanging, but still pretty depressing. The main character was incredibly disconnected with the world for most of the book, I felt awful. The book was well written and interesting, but I really don't think I'll read it again.

To be honest, I feel rather ambivalent about this book. At a certain point in the book, I had every intention to give this one star.

The author is clearly a genius. He weaved together a plot with an unexpected twist, a real unexpected twist. He craftily uses foreshadowing to lead the reader down another path instead. And I did feel a real shock and surprise at the final twist which made me flip back through the pages I had angrily skipped, searching for more genius details that I might have miss

Hated this book. I have enjoyed every Jostein Gaarder book I've ever read, but not this one. Kept reading in case it might get better, but it got worse instead. Very unlikeable character. What a disappointment, to find a Gaarder book in this unlikely place, and then for it to be crummy.
