Liver Let Die (A Clueless Cook Mystery #1)
by
Liz Lipperman (Goodreads Author)
Jordan McAllister can't cook her way out of a macaroni & cheese box, but filling in for the culinary reporter at "The Ranchero Globe" is better than writing personal ads. Her first assignment to review the new steakhouse in town is a disaster that ends with her waiter murdered outside her door-with her name and number in his pocket. Now Jordan is the prime suspect, as...more

Liz Lipperman uses her first in the "Clueless Cook" series to show us she knows just how to craft that cozy mystery with a big honking grin on her face.
Brassy aspiring sports writer Jordan Macallister, stuck instead writing personal ads in a backwater town, takes an assignment as a food critic, even though she can't make toast. On her first assignment, the classiest restaurant Texas has to offer, she dumps the foie gras in her purse rather than - ugh - eat it, and thereby becomes (unwittingly) t...more

If you like your mysteries fun, fast, and fresh, try this sassy debut novel from Liz Lipperman. It details the tribulations of a young lady, wannabe sports reporter Jordan McAllister, as she takes on a new job that's murder. As a hapless and hopeless anti-foodie who has a hard time even boiling water, she's tapped to become an overnight food critic, and must journey to an exclusive new restaurant and report on the cuisine.

Don't order the foie gras. If you don't take anything else from this book, at least take that. As you may have guessed, this is a cozy/foodie mystery.
Jordan is getting by at her job, writing personals when she would rather be working in the sports section. So when an opening comes up (temporary mind you) for the food column, she reluctantly takes it. And after a unique experience at a restaurant involving foie gras, she gets pretty famous for her column. But then her waiter shows up dead at her...more

Jordan McAllister always wanted to be a sportswriter. But after graduating from journalism school, she followed her boyfriend to Dallas, where she was unceremoniously dumped. Wanting to get away from him, she took a job writing personal ads for the newspaper in tiny Ranchero, Texas, "just until something more suitable turned up".
The paper's resident food critic has an accident, and Jordan is "called up" to cover for her. The only problem is that Jordan knows nothing about food. Has first assignm...more

I'd call this first in a new series a "non-culinary" mystery. Jordan McAllister is stuck writing personals for a small-town newspaper and dreaming of a career as a big-time sports reporter when she is suddenly asked to take over the food column. Jordan knows how to fry bologna and that's about it--her cast iron skillet is literally unused, though she puts it to good use here. In one of the funniest scenes I've read in a long time, she is sent to review an upsccale steak restaurant. She confesses...more
This new book series is going to become a joy to look forward to. I base this observation upon my devouring the first, "Liver Let Die."
The premise is a sports journalist has moved to a small town, Ranchero, Texas as she finds herself chucked out by her love in Austin. The journalist finds herself in the only available job in town...a personal ads clerk. To her delight the editor offers her a part-time (no pay increase,) appointment as writer of "The Kitchen Kupboard." This is only for the time...more

Despite the fact that I write food reviews for a local newspaper, I found this book to be an enjoyable romp and a neat little mystery.
You have to be willing to suspend disbelief. Small town newspaper editors don't really just hand a credit card to complete unknowns and tell them to write restaurant reviews.
But a few elements really make this book sparkle. First of all, Jordan McAllister's driving ambition is to be a sports columnist. That's what she's trained for. She's absolutely clueless in t...more

This seems like a fun series with a quirky bunch of characters - the "new" fad of mysteries and recipes. But this one has a twist - the main character isn't a chef or a caterer; she's not even a home cook or a foodie. Jordan McAllister is a sports journalist who ended up in a small Texas town working for the local paper, but typing the Personals, making barely more than minimum wage. THEN she's offered the chance to sub for the current culinary reporter, who's recovering from broken bon...more

Jordan McAllister’s dreams of being a sports news reporter hits a snag when her fiancé leaves her for another woman. She has no choice but to leave Dallas and move to the small town of Ranchero, Texas where she moves into an apartment building with a zany group of neighbors. She accepts a job writing personal ads for the local newspaper. When one of her co-workers has an injury and is unable to work, Jordan is temporarily assigned to her food critic column. Jordan knows nothing about fine cuisin...more
I really liked the writing! Very clean, readable, logical and well-paced! The action moves along at a clip while the descriptive parts and dialogue blend together swimmingly. I could not put it down and read the story in one sitting, which is rare for me.

Jordan McAllister is stuck writing the personals for the “Ranchero Globe,” but she really wants the opportunity to be a sports reporter. When the culinary reporter for the Globe has a jet ski accident and needs someone to fill in, Jordan gets the opportunity to shine at the newspaper. The problem? This book is the first in the A Cluelass Cook Mystery, by new author Liz Lipperman.
Liver Let Die is a very entertaining addition to the mystery genre.
Jordan McAllister has always dreamed of being a sports columnist. After breaking up with her boyfriend, she has moved to the small Texas city of Ranchero, TX and has gotten a job at Ranchero Globe. Okay, she is writing personal ads for the paper, but she has hopes. The culinary columnist has just broken her hip and will be rehab for six weeks. Jord...more

I burned through this book in an afternoon. I wasn't that keen on reading it. I picked it up randomly at the library. It was a great book. Good plot. Not as straight forward as it seems at first (the is a positive not a negative) Interesting characters, although the list of them is a bit formulatic, they work well. I like that the protagonist works for a newspaper, it gives lots of reasons for her to be involved in future murders. Also there is quite a bit or potential in her gang of characters...more

I think it was the clever title that first drew me to this book. "Liver Let Die: A Clueless Cook Mystery" fit the story perfectly. The clueless cook in question is Jordan McAllister. Her ambition in life is to be a big time sports reporter, but instead she's stuck doing the personal ads for a small town newspaper. When the paper's food critic takes a leave of absence, Jordan's boss insists that she take over the weekly Kitchen Kupboard column. There are only two problems: Jordan can...more

For a first novel, this was ok. But with 2 different plot lines and a heroine taking ridiculous risks, the story lacked in more ways than one. Bringing in her Catholic upbringing so far into the novel was like an add-on for no reason. Totally unnecessary. As was the fact or lack thereof as to whether the coach was married or not. That did not move the story along. Also, the timeline left much to be desired. Days and weeks became one with each other from one page to the next. The ending was predi...more
Jordan McAllister is about as worthy a protagonist as I've read in some time. On the rebound from an old flame, she longs to use her journalism degree to write sports columns for newspapers. Unfortunately, life's been rough and she ends up in Ranchero, Texas, barely earning a living, writing personal ads and subsisting on fast food and Hostess Ho Hos.

Jordan Mc Allister dreams of being a sports columnist, not a food critic. She doesn,t know the first thing about food. But when the culinary reporter at the Ranchero Globe is injured. The editor asks Jordan to fill in well its better than writing personal ads. She thinks writing the weekly Kitchen Kupboard column will bring her closer - to the coveted sports column. Her first assignment is reviewing the new steak house in town. She should never have ordered the Foie Gras- or hidden it in her pur...more
If you enjoy culinary cozies, you'll enjoy this one from debut cozy author, Liz Lipperman. She introduces us to Jordan McAllister, a journalist in a small-town in Texas. In an instant, I welcomed Jordan into my world, as I entered in hers, and rooted for her throughout the novel. We realize how she struggled to make ends meet as a journalism for a small newspaper, and how she glowed into the limelight, when this new assignment of hers is the hit.. with yummy recipes for you to make. We see an in...more
My mama always told me "If you cook, you have to clean up". She sewed while I cooked and I cleaned up. I did the same for about twenty years after I got married. But my second husband is a great cook and he cleans up. It is like a long vacation to me. This is the first culinary cozy that I have read where the main character is "clueless" about cooking. I figure that she doesn't have to clean up. Pretty smart right?

I read a lot of mysteries. Some series I have given up on because the characters have grown hollow or because the main character should just marry or dump her love interest already.
The Clueless Cook series though has a potential for a long run, and one that I will want to see to the finish line.
Liver Let Die was at times hilarious and the characters have such interesting personalities that I am looking forward to the next book, Beef Stolen-Off.

I won this book from "Goodreads First-Reads".This is Liz Lipperman's first novel and I am so glad I was picked as a winner to read it. The story was fast paced and kept me trying to guess who was doing the killing, but it also was funny throughout the whole thing. This is about a bunch of strangers who live together in the same apartment building who become a family that would do anything to help one another. Jordan writes for a newspaper trying to work her way up to become their sports columnis...more
Great debut! Jordan is trained as a sports writer but ends up writing personal ads for a small paper. She becomes the culinary columnist by default when the current writer has an accident. One small problem....Jordan doesn't cook. She also doesn't eat red meat and her first resturant review is at a local steak house. Madcap adventure ensues when her waiter is found dead near her apartment. Quirky appartment occupants, a hunky stanger and a goldfish make for a quick fun read. 4 stars
I really enjoyed this book. I started it after a workday that had worn me down, and within just a few pages I was giggling and having such a great time getting to know Jordan. I immediately sympathized with her because I'm not much of a cook either, and I really admired her for trying to get ahead by doing restaurant reviews without any culinary skills in her repertoire.

Okay, I know it seems like forever since I started reading Liver Let Die, but it was not because of the book. The book moves with a quick pace as we follow Jordan McAllister and watch her get entangled in all sorts of crises all because of some duck liver foie gras!

This book was really fun. The author took liberties mixing some genres (Noir, Mystery, Romance) and it turned out great. All the characters were fun and likable. Normally I don't like the girl and guy points of view in one book, that's usually a romance-novel niche for I-like-your-bod, you know? But Alex having a voice in the book was interesting since he was also one of the book's mysteries, besides who had killed the waiter. I hope the next book is as good.
Ms. Lipperman knows how to cook up a great story! Buckle up, girls...you're in for one helluva ride! And bring your fan...YOU'LL NEED IT! Liver Let Die grabbed me from the first line and never let go! I was burning the midnight oil with this one with my cat on my lap, wondering if I'd ever go to bed. If you love hilarious, sexy mysteries, you won't be disappointed. I just hope Ms. Lipperman's fingers are busy tapping away at the next novel! I'm addicted!
When Jordan is given a temporary assignment of writing a food review on a local restaurant, who knew it would lead to the murder of her waiter...and near her apartment. As one of the prime suspects, she feels that she needs to help with solving this case. Ms. Lippmann has provided a great plot and wonderful characters in this first of the Clueless Cook Mystery series. Can't wait to return to Ranchero for another adventure.
Jordan McAllister has moxie. It's a pleasure hanging around with her and the colorful neighbors from her apartment building. In addition to the fun characters, the book is well-written, with humor, romance, food and dead bodies. Everything I love most in a book. As a bonus, I might try a few of the recipes in the back of the book. This book was pure delicious enjoyment. I hope the next Clueless Cook Mystery comes out soon.
