A few months ago, my husband and I had the pleasure of going to the Titanic Museum in Branson. Not too long after did I receive this book for review. I don't think the fascination of this event will ever get lost in history. If you have any interest in historical elaboration or this specific event in general, then this book is definitely for you. It is full of information and they even include interviews with Titanic survivors themselves, including crew members who had behind-the-scenes details...more

“101 Things You Thought You Knew About the Titanic... But Didn't!” was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. It contains exactly what the title says, 101 unknown facts about the Titanic, the passengers, and its sinking.
I have always been fascinated with anything surrounding that fateful voyage. This book did not disappoint. It is clear that the authors did their research. It is full of new and interesting facts that are not common knowled...more

(I received this as an ARC from netgalley.)

The book is exactly what it says it is. A list of 101 "myths" about the Titanic and explanations for how true (or not) they are.

My only gripe about this book is it relies much too heavily on the actual deposition transcriptions. (They can be found at TitanicInquiry.org)
It's not to say they aren't interesting and none of them should have been included. Several of the first hand accounts added to the atmosphere and put things in new light. My personal f...more

101 Things You Thought You Knew About The Titanic... But Didn't!, was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. It contains exactly what the title promises, 101 little known facts about the Titanic, its passengers, and the fateful night that it sank into the frigid sea.

Review:

I, like a billion other people on planet earth, have watched the fictional James Cameron version of The Titanic more times than I'd like to admit. The ship,...more

It's another review of mine that got flushed/deleted somehow. Goodreads has done nothing. I am not surprised. So I find them, one by one, whenever I come across a book on someone's list that I know I reviewed but Goodreads says I didn't. It makes me sad that my hard work is viewed with so little care. Good for me that I have them saved because Goodreads doesn't care about me or my reviews.

I don't read a lot of nonfiction, but I am trying to change that. The problem for me with nonfiction...more

I have always been a Titanic fanatic. I love to look at the old photos and watch all the different movies and documentaries out there. So when I saw this book being offered on NetGalley, I couldn't resist picking it up!
This title did not disappoint! I loved the straightforward method that Tim Maltin used of basically asking a question and answering it. From question 1 to question 101, I was hooked!

This book taught me so much I either didn't know or was completely wrong about when it came to the...more

[This book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review].

I was going to leave reading this book until closer to the 100th anniversary of the sinking, but couldn’t resist for more than a day or two after being given access to the galley.

This book does exactly what it says on the tin – sheds light on 101 stories or myths about the Titanic and its sinking. A surprising number of these ‘myths’ turned out to be true, or at least based quite heavily on truth.

Both a strength and a...more

The sinking of the Titanic was one of the worst tragedies in modern history, evidenced by the fact that, as a whole, we're still salivating over it 100 years later. We're still eager for information about it, we want to know the people, we still want to learn things we didn't know, and for some god awful reason, we want 1996's Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet released in 3D. Apparently there isn't a god.

But that's besides the point. As a crazy Titanic enthusiast myself, having...more

101 Things I didn't really want to know

It was the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic ... and I thought there might be some interesting trivia ... but this was one for Titanic philes ... a lot of humdrum information with excerpts from the inquiries. And maybe giving it the cutesy title meant that he had to think up 101 things so there was a bit of repetition that didn't add anything to the interest level.

The good thing about it was that the information was arranged under bold he...more

Oh my, what a fantastic book! Normally I'm not a fan of non-fiction, but as this was about the Titanic (one of my favorite subjects) and it was on NetGalley, I figured I'd give it a shot. Wow! I totally got more than I bargained for. I'd read books about the Titanic before, but this one went way more in depth than anything I've ever read. I loved the format, answering questions about the Titanic in a true/false way. Maltin goes to great pains to research the answers to the questions he poses, wi...more

I consider myself reasonably well-versed in Titanic lore, having done a huge research project on the ship and its sinking when I was in middle school. But that was rather long ago, and there has been more research on the tragedy since, so I was glad to get a chance to read this book. Some of the 101 things I really did know from my research, but others, backed by first-hand accounts from survivors, were totally new to me, and it was fascinating to read more about this horrible event. With 100th...more

37. That's how many things I DID know about the Titanic. :-) Actually, there was technically more that I knew, but that was part of the information to help answer/support answers to some of the questions and not the questions themselves. Well-researched and interesting facts. Nice to see some of the myths that have hung around be addressed, especially as this is the second source I've seen refute some of those myths. Some answers may never be able be verified in this world, but at least I know t...more

April 15, 2012 marked the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. 101 Things You Thought You Knew About the Titanic ... but Didn't! by Tim Maltin takes a new look at the events before, during and after and pulls apart the legend that has grown up around the sinking.

While 101 Things... doesn't take sides on whether or not the sinking should have been avoided. Instead, it takes a more neutral stance. If not the Titanic, then some other ship of similar size would have been the one to s...more

Very interesting!

101 Things You Thought You Knew About the Titanic -- the "things" are given in question form and the answers are never simple yes or no.

Questions are divided into sections: The Ship, Omens, Maiden Voyage, Passengers, "Iceberg, right ahead!", Collision, SOS, The Californian Incident, Women and Children First, Final Moments, Rescue, Statistics and Aftermath

This well-researched book provided a lot of interesting information, a little of which I knew and some I assumed. For a lot o...more

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic, but despite all the years that have passed since it plunged to the Atlantic's sea floor, taking over 1,500 lives with it, myths and stories and misconceptions have continued to make their rounds. And in the midst of all the floods of books that came out to mark the anniversary, Tim Maltin's 101 Things You Thought You Knew About the Titanic...but Didn't! emerged as an excellent example of how to correct the storyline the...more

I was looking forward to reading about all the things I knew about the Titanic but didn't. In truth, I read about things in fact already did know abotu the Titanic. It was still a decent book of facts and would probably be good for anyone who didn't know much about the Titanic to dispell rumors and highlight interesting facts, but for Titanic history experts its nothing new or shocking.
Susan Paxton
Good and entertaining reading; those not particularly familiar with the story will glean a great deal of information, and for those of us more familiar with the story there are new viewpoints (particularly on the Californian controversy - I look forward to Maltin's forthcoming book on that subject) and only a few nitpicks.
Janet
A detailed depiction of survivor accounts & testimony related to a variety of questions and misconceptions about this epic tragedy. The book is categorized into a variety of topics (sinking, statistics, rescue, etc.) and answers the factuality, or lack thereof, to popular questions. Very informative and detailed.

Reading my token non-fiction of the month--100th anniversary has me interested in it!
It was filled with facts, but they were just too dry for my taste--lots of quoted text from the questioning of survivors in the days that followed. I learned a lot, but it was like reading a textbook.

I really enjoyed this. The Titanic is just one of those fascinatingly tragic history topics that I am interested in. I loved reading and dispelling the myths about the Titanic.

let me quote this line of testimony - 'i thought "the poop is going to float.' when you read that at 1am when you are sleep deprived, it becomes a whole new experience.

One of the best books I've ever read about the Titanic. I love how the author broke the book into 101 questions and answers about the wreck. I got to talk to the author and communicate over email, as I booked him for our radio show. It was a big thrill!

I won this book - as I recall - for answering a trivia question on twitter about the Titanic.

It's actually a very enjoyable book. A few of the facts I did know, but many I didn't. Ismay really wasn't as bad as all that. A great proportion of the dead weren't from steerage. The band may not have been playing "Nearer My God To Thee" as she went down. And many, many other factoids.

The author uses different sources, among them the actual transcripts of the two different inquiries into the accident....more

A quick read with some fun trivia. The technical explanations flew way over my head, but thankfully there weren't too many.

I've been intrigued by the Titanic since my teens, and this was an interesting look at some of the myths and misconceptions that have been associated with the Titanic's sinking.
