Mary Calmes (Goodreads Author)
Six years ago, Noah Wheeler went to meet his boyfriend, Dante Cerreto, at the airport, and his world ended. Dante was kissing someone else and claimed to be in love. So Noah took his heartbreak-and the sonogram pictures of their surrogate child-and closed the door on the big picture of what he thought his life would be, focusing instead on the piece of the dream he got to...more

EDIT 27 Apr 2012: So once I came to terms with the Jory-ness, this has become one of my favourite stories of all time. When I have a really tough day this is short enough for a feel-good, melt-my-heart read in bed before I go to sleep. It has a 100% success rate at de-stressing me.
Original rating was 3 stars, revised rating = 5 stars.

‘Again’ is a completely captivating, breathtakingly fast-paced, sweet fairy tale of a story. Forget realism, the focus here is on the whirlwind of emotions Noah, the narrator of the story, goes through. I don’t think I took a single breath between the first and last page and I loved every second of it. Mary Calmes masterfully condensed the feelings and events of what could easily have been a novel into the microcosm of a novella and, as a consequence, left me with the same response I always have...more
Like others, my only complaint was how short it was. But otherwise it was sweet, funny, and engaging. Dante was hilarious--you could see why Noah was such a sucker for him, and Gracie was wonderful. Noah was funny because he tried so hard to be 'rational' but when Dante was there he was a whole other person--and no, his supposed boyfriend DIDN'T get him at all. In a way, this felt like a salute to the Harlequin novels of yore--the theme was a familiar one for the old het romances and, Noah's det...more
This was absolutely perfect! It was sweet, funny, and totally captivating. It made my heart ache in places, too. I only wish the story had been longer, because I fell in love with Noah and Dante and wanted to see so much more of their life together and their family once they had been reunited. Gracie was such a sweetheart, and Dante totally cracked me up. I loved his confident attitude and his pure determination to get Noah back and to be a dad to Gracie. I also loved his passion - he loved Noah...more

Okay, so I really liked this book and maybe because it was written from Noah's point of view he had an advantage but I really didn't like Dante. He broke Noah's heart and we saw the pain Noah went through until Grace was born.
Six years later, Noah runs into Dante's brother in Vegas while he's there with Grace for a wedding. Before he even knows what is going on, Dante shows up and is outraged by not knowing about his daughter.

I was intrigued by the premise and I like this author. This story has a short story feel to it in that it comes to the point quickly without much development. Story development and character growth is a big deal to me usually, but I must have been in the right mood because I was able to enjoy this quick read anyway.

This was a sweet book. I loved the characters, the story, the ending. Loved, loved, loved it. So why just 4 stars? I did have a problem with how much happens in so little time. The whole book takes place in 2 days. And while I understand why the split happened, it seemed a bit unbelievable (view spoiler)...more
The story itself wouldn't be believable for me if I didn't actually know a man in a similar position. Although he didn't get the happy ending. What bothered me wasn't Noah and it wasn't the story line. It was the total Pushiness of Dante. He was gone for 6 years and then expected Noah's world to revolve around him again and for a child to accept him as a parent because he is so F-ing Wonderful and deigned to grace them with his presence! I don't think so. He needed to Earn his way back into Noa...more
Six years ago Noah's husband, Dante, told him he didn't love him anymore and ended their relationship. What Dante didn't know was that they had a child on the way (Noah was going to tell him about the baby, carried by a surrogate, that day). Even though his heart was broken, Noah still wanted to tell his soon-to-be ex-husband that he was going to be a father. The only problem was that Dante and his family disappeared. Now Dante has magically shown up wanting win the affections of both his daught...more
I really wanted to like this book, I generally like Ms Calmes writing method, but this book just rubbed me the wrong way. Dante was just so unappealing as a character that it took everything in me to give up on this book. One, he was gone 6 years and had the resources to find Noah if he chose to but did not. Second, the way Noah capitulated to him did not seem like a love thing, the way he gave in to dante was just too easy in my opinion, there was no resolution to address the 6 year absence. Th...more

If the love of your life appears six years after breaking your heart, do you give him a second chance? That’s the question Noah is considering when his ex-husband and father of their child shows up unexpectedly. Although Dante broke Noah’s heart year ago, Noah can’t help the love he still feels. Although he knows it's fast and overwhelming, Noah can’t quite stop the hope that he and Dante can live happily ever after this time.

The story is very romantic, even if I had the feeling Noah was a little naïve; Dante and Noah loved each other, their family supported them, everything was so perfect that they decide to have a child using Noah’s sister as surrogate mother. If their relationship was so strong and long-lasting, how Noah could have given up to it so easy? And if Dante was so clever to be a CIA agent, how could he be so easily deceived?

Again reads like a classic romance with the typical cheesy misunderstanding, super quick resolution to every conceivable problem and easy happy ending. That’s not bad if you’re looking for something short, sweet, and mildly funny. It’s not a story you’d remember or even care about as soon as you put it down, nor are the characters really that entertaining but the story itself is romantic enough for an easy read.

I generally love Mary Calmes’ novels. I have several of her books that are favorites.
However, when it comes to short stories, I feel the author’s strength lies with long, engrossing novels. The “Matter of Times” series is an example of her great story telling skill.
“Again” just doesn’t cut it for me. The major conflict of the story is weak and doesn’t hold up simply because I can’t get around why Dante and Noah ended up separated.

There were so many things that I enjoyed in this short story, like how Noah's meltdown was tempered with humor by the reactions of his friends and family, how hot his reunion sex with Dante was (I loved how dominant Dante was with him), and how adorable Gracie was. She completed their family perfectly. Usually I want to club one or both of the guys over the head when their separation is caused by a stupid misunderstanding, but in this case they were deliberately fed misinformation by a...more

Overall, this is an enjoyable, albeit very short read. I enjoyed the premise, and was excited by the first chapter (which I read off dreamspinner's website before the book was published). Unfortunately, I found the book as a whole to be lacking. Six years after he was kicked out of Dante's life, Noah and Dante accidentally meet in Vegas, and bam... they are back together. With minimal fuss, they resolve all their issues.

Okay, let's see what DOESN'T WORK first.
One: since the story is pretty much fast-forwarded 5-years after the first chapter (in which we read about Noah being miserable after Dante dumped him for a woman), I expect MORE on the reunion. I don't care what Dante's reason is (or that someone else actually ruined their life for them), I totally NOT expect (view spoiler)...more

Noah and Dante were couple who were thinking to have a surrogate mother for their child. They asked Noah's sister if she's willing to do so. Before she answered, Dante--a CIA agent--had to be undercover for months. When it's time to pick Dante in the airport, Noah brought the sonogram picture of their baby. There, Noah saw Dante kissed and professed his love to his female partner. Noah's heart was broken. Even when he tried to contact Dante through the family about their baby, Dante and his fami...more
This is a really sweet story. I loved the characters and, for all the weirdness and the niggling doubts about the characters not really caring that much if they didn't care to investigate themselves...for me, it lent a certain realism to the story. I mean, for all that it's easy to castigate Dante for trusting Beck, it makes more sense that he would have. Because he's human. And because he should (and probably has before) trust Beck with his life (he's his handler; who else can he trust on missi...more
okay - I read some of the other people's reviews and the chief complaint is that this book is too short and that everything seems very rushed. I have to agree that yes, I would definitely have enjoyed a full length novel with these two characters, and yes, the pace was extremely fast. But as I read it, the pace actually made it more exciting for me.

It was a nice story and I liked it, but I can't say anything more positive about it. The main conflict was just too weak to make a great story. It seems stupid that they let each other go like that, if they loved each other that much, why didn't they try harder? And when they meet again, Noah's reluctance to get back together with Dante seemed a little forced to me. Some of the reviews I read say that it happens too quick but for their situation I think it was really the opposite. I mean misunde...more
This was a bit disappointing. When I read the synopsis, I thought the story had a lot of potential for drama. It could have been a tearjerker at its best, but instead I end up reading a rushed story.
The Good:
-Happy ending. I'm a sucker for a happy ending.
-Dante is an FBI agent, or at least used to be one.
-Family-oriented story.
-I love how close Noah is to Dante's family.
The Bad:
-Lack of depth to characters
-Poor characterization
-Poor climax
-The Keith resolution was lame. I was expecting conflict....more
