I don't know if anyone who didn't grow up with Sailor Moon (through their childhood or teen years) can ever really understand the allure of this series, its characters, and its story or feel an impact from all of it. Most of the people I know who are fans fell in love with the series first through the anime (which aired in Japan from 1992-1997 and then very haphazardly in the United States from 1995-2000) and then later discovered the original manga series once the internet came into their homes...more

First, before you do anything else, go and listen to this.

Good, now we can begin all proper and such.

I feel like this should be a review in two parts. The nostalgia from my early childhood and the reality of the volume itself.

Part ONE:

Back in the days long, long before I knew what anime or manga were, I was but a baby. A baby that really liked watching cartoons. Sailor Moon was a show that I would catch on TV every so often, during the days before I had to attend kindergarten. Sailor Moon was...more

Most of you probably remember Sailor Moon as a rather silly cartoon series from the mid-90s. And you're probably looking at me wondering, "Why is he reading a stupid kid's comic?" What you have to understand, though, is that what aired in the US was a bowdlerized dub of a series that was itself heavily watered down from its source material. Among the more notable offenses, the American dub handwaved away all the deaths in the series, turned one gay male character into a straight woman, turned a...more

This where it all started for me. My interest in manga (and, by extension, western comics) really started watching Sailor Moon early on weekday mornings, getting ready to go to high school. Ah, memories. And yes, Sailor Moon really does hold up to my memories of a fun, romantic, and beautifully drawn manga.

Sailor Moon herself is probably a character you either love or hate. She's flawed, and yet she's given this power that she really doesn't know what to do with. Let's be honest, Usagi is a bit...more

WELL, THIS WAS GREAT! When I was a wee little child, Sailor Moon was my absolute favourite show of ever, I never missed an episode! But I recently realized - Sailor Moon is a book to tv adaptations.. And don't I believe in reading the book as well as watching the adaptation?! So I wonderfully got it for Christmas and loved it!
This was a perfect transition for me, into the manga/anime/graphic novel genre because it's a story that I already love with characters that I adore!
Basically, I loved thi...more

Favorite moment in the volume one manga:

I really enjoyed re-reading volume one of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and I was able to appreciate it even more as it has been almost six years since I've last read the content in the manga. Sailor Moon Vol. 1 tells the beginning of Usagi's journey as she is told be a cat named Luna that she is destined to protect the Moon Princess and the Earth from the Dark Kingdom. She is joined on this journey by Sailor Mercury, Mars and Jupiter, who are all discover...more

Cute. I remember loving the TV show when I was a kid, and I liked this volume quite a bit as well.

The art work is nice, though there are a few drawings that look a bit odd due to awkward proportions on characters. It's still loads better than I'd ever be able to do, though.

The story is interesting, and it's doesn't seem dated - I can see it still being popular today. The characters personalities are believable, and mostly likeable (Usagi is a crybaby, which I can see people finding annoying)....more

I was so unbelievably happy to find out that a renewal existed! It just made me enjoy it all the more. The translations are a lot better than the partial 'clunky-ness' of the old ones in my opinion and of course it's Sailor Moon; what's not to love?

Sailor Moon does mean quite a lot to me, so I was really, REALLY happy when I got to Japan and found the whole series in their new covers. It has been out of print in English ever since I first discovered it, but now I can read Japanese. And without the pages being flipped, to boot. Certainly the art looks a lot better now, although I must admit, it's still really early 90s (as well as the language use, I'm fairly sure no Japanese girl ever uses the particle 'wa' anymore to end a sentence with?)...more

Ok let me just say that I love the anime series and I was really intrested in reading the original sailor moon in manga. I was SOO lucky to have the manga re published in this year because I watched the series on YouTube for 3 years and I finished it summer 2011.
Ok what I think about the book.
The characters are really simil...more

Ever since the ill fated Mixx/Tokyopop lost their license to the series I've been hoping that Sailor Moon would eventually hit these shores again and they have. Happy day!

Fangirl gush aside, I really enjoyed this volume. The artwork is gorgeous, which is what you'd expect for a mangaka of Takeuchi's caliber. It's interesting to flip through the pages and let my eyes slide over the illustrations.

The translations are a little awkward at times, though. One of the things that Kodansha really hyped...more

Sailor Moon possesses a certain quality that seems to be disappearing from Shoujo manga. Arguably, this trait is feminism.

Usagi is the hero. Let's be clear on this. The childish, untrained, untested, (unwilling!! and newly awakened guardian of justice is the hero in this story. Not the love interest. The frills, accessories and miniskirts do not negate this. (On that point, does Takeuchi draw in any panty shots? The answer is thankfully no.)

Tuxedo Mask serves as a romantic interest, emotional su...more

Review:

I thought this was pretty decent. There were some things that I did not really like, including the extremely showy outfits these 14 year old girls were drawn as wearing. I know that this is probably a very common style, but I also know from browsing other styles both in the library and online that this is not the only style there is. I think it is just a matter of me finding a style that suits me.

The story was really interesting, though, and despite the fact that I didn't really understa...more

Sailor Moon, despite not remotely being the greatest manga ever written, is the reason I got into anime and manga in the first place. It holds a special place in my heart, and so I'll be honest and admit I'm not the most objective person to review it.

Like the Sailor V manga, the storytelling and art start off weak in this volume, although by the end the writing improves somewhat. Takeuchi lazily borrows character designs from Sailor V for several characters, which is all the more glaring since K...more

This review and more are also on my blog, http://bellesbookshelf.blogspot.com/

I've been wanting to try manga for awhile so it's probably appropriate that my first foray into the genre was with Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, considering that Sailor Moon was my first experience with anime. While it's probably on the younger side for me these days, it was a non-intimidating way to break into manga, and still a lot of fun to read - especially coz it got bonus points for nostalgia.

If you're not familia...more

But then again; better late than never, right?

My roommate and I have been exchanging books that are decidedly not homework, and I suspect she's giving me the Sailor Moon manga to make me like Sailor Moon Crystal better. It is not working. Every complaint that I have about Sailor Moon Crystal is flipped in this manga. The characters are well-defined, with believable interpersonal conflicts popping up in their conversations, the fights are well done, and, though she's lazy and does poorly in school, Usagi seems like a competent enough individ...more

I re-read this due to Sailor Moon Crystal - if you have seen one of those episodes you know it is far truer to the source material than the original series and I wanted to see just how much truer.

The answer - some of the shots in the new anime are lifted straight from the pages of the manga.

In terms of re-readability, this held up pretty well. The beginning few 'acts' were predictable but then the original series (which I still recall more strongly than anything else) and the new series were pre...more

A girly blonde middle school student named Usagi gains magical powers, cute clothes, and a lot of accessories that, to my suspicious mind, fit rather well into a cynical marketing campaign.

(why is there no page for the English version of volume 1??)

Now don't get me wrong. I like Sailor Moon. A bunch of unique girls gaining magical powers, then fighting peoples? I like the idea. Plus, I picked it up because I was reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer recently. (If you don't understand the parallel, loo...more

I did not, in a million years, think that I was going to read this series.

But my daughters really loved it, and they know I love manga so they gushed constantly until I read it. I'm glad I did.

That said, I'm not sure what to make of it. The drawing turned out to be very pretty. The way Naoko Takeuchi draws Usagi at times looks absolutely ethereal. And she also does an excellent job with the funny bits as well.

The story is fun, if a bit over the top at times. It almost reads like a parody of shou...more

My 5 year old self screamed when I discovered that they were going to do a reprint of the Sailor Moon manga. I had been (and still am!) a hardcore fan of the franchise. I had grew up on the anime and was only accustomed to the plot lines in the anime but as I grew older I was aware of the differences between the manga and the anime. Let me just say that going from watching the anime to reading the manga was no big deal for me. Most of the origin story of Usagi was very similar to the one of her...more

(I'm going to let this stand as my review for each volume of the series, since I feel the same way about the whole thing).

How have I gone this long without posting a Goodreads review of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga??! Bad fan! (on the bright side, I can count this for my 2014 Goodreads Challenge, since I recent re-read the whole series!)

Sailor Moon was a staple of my adolescent years (thanks to my younger sister and an open mind to try new things), as such I'm going to be pretty biased...more
