I actually got this book as an official review book and as such, it came with a couple of publicity letters courtesy of the publisher/editor/PR office. These missives focused mainly on how Ross' book was an attempt to describe how horrible, shallow and materialistic the dating scene is in L.A. especially in regards to women who're approaching or have crested the 40-year hill. Ross actually summarizes the overall issues very neatly by writing, "Men in their forties wanted girls in their twenties,...more I actually got this book as an official review book and as such, it came with a couple of publicity letters courtesy of the publisher/editor/PR office. Ross actually summarizes the overall issues very neatly by writing, "Men in their forties wanted girls in their twenties, men in their fifties and sixties wanted women in their thirties and absolutely nobody wanted a woman in her forties -- except the odd twenty-year old with a cougar fantasy."

Unfortunately, no matter what the PR missives say, the only thing Ross manages to do is reinforce the stereotype that a woman needs a man in order to make anything of herself--especially if she happens to be over forty. The book follows the antics of three sort-of friends, Dawn, Chloe and Skye, as they wander the barren landscape of the LA dating scene, intent on scoring rich husbands. Ross tries to blame the feminist movement for warping the expectations of women by promising them they can "have it all," but it's hard to see how these women could ever amount to anythiing significant when all they do is trade sex for dinner and clothes, have arguments over who gets to flirt with the cute guys they meet at the gym/bar and then telling the same cute guys to "blow me" when the guys try to pick them up. Mixed messages much?

The worst part of all is that some of the women appear to have actual marketable talents, yet for some reason these talents are never realized until a couple of rich men show up and "help" them to realize their full potential. Wow, way to slingshot women back to the 1950's. Sheesh.

Ross does have a good pacing to her writing (which is the only reason I'm not giving this book one star) and there's always something happening so even if you're totally disgusted by the shallow antics of the main characters you can't help but turn the page to see what happens next. (less)

Blow me is a quick read that balances on the edge of fun/interesting and meh. Like many books, it had it’s highs and lows and having finished, I’m not really sure where I stand… The writing was great. It kept a nice light hearted tone while touching on many of the issues single woman face as they get older: infertility, loneliness and dating in a world that seems to be completely focused on age. All three women are in close to forty, lying about their ages, hoping for a better life, and waiting for a man to help them fix it. But can they figure out what they really want before it’s too late? And how do friendships survive in the land of frenemies and backstabbers, where jealousy reigns supreme?

I live in Iowa, and let me tell you- Blow Me really opened my eyes to what LA can be like for some people. Each character had a unique story and personality, and Ross writes with engaging humor that kept me focused on the plot. Skylar and Dawn take over in the middle, with Chloe kind of fading away, but Chloe’s reappearance at the end of the novel is hilarious and a nice way to tie up her story. Between Skylar and Dawn, I enjoyed reading about Dawn more because she seemed more down to earth and prepared about handling her own life. Skylar seemed to be just waiting for a hand out, but in the end she learns how to find her passion and that made for a great ending. The suspense lagged a little in the middle, but the humorous scenes made up for that and kept me entertained. I would warn readers that this is a pretty provocative novel, so keep that in mind if you enjoy more cookie-cutter reads. I hope Lennie Ross has another book for us soon, because I really enjoyed her writing style and I’m sure all the stories she has from living in Los Angeles will make more great characters!

Skylar is a executive assistant who ends up losing her job and burning down her apartment after a wild night. Dawn is a matchmaker who is trying to slow down the aging process by freezing her embryos. Lastly Chloe is a struggling actress who is struggling to get a Green Cards. All of these women’s lives are in chaos and their hope is to be rescued through marrying a rich man. Set in the shallow world of LA, this provocative novel is set in the style of Sex and the City and humour sly looks at aging, dating and being forty.

Lennie Ross manages to tell an entertaining story with lots of personality while giving us a very honest look into the dating lives of single women in their forties. I really enjoyed the way in which Lennie added unique humour into the storyline, which made Blow Me even more engaging. One particular moment I laughed out loud at was, “There has been a women at the open house with a a very large handbag that Skye found suspicious. Skye wondered if she could have stolen the frickin cat”. I also really enjoyed the way in which Lennie keeps this light tone while dealing with emotional issues such as infertility and dating in an age obsessed LA. In terms of the characters I found Skye to be hilarious, however she is very self-centred, which makes it a little hard to find her likeable. Lennie does a great of creating a character is Chloe who readers are not supposed to like but who provides great entertainment throughout the novel. My favourite character has to be Dawn. I found her emotional moments within the novel to be moving and even though she enjoys living the glamorous life, she is the most down to earth of all the three girls. Many writers have done the topic of single women in their forties many times before, however I felt that Lennie was able to put a unique spin on the story making it seem fresh and new. Lennie also really brought the setting of LA to life and it really opened my eyes to how judgmental and cruel LA can be at times.

In terms of what I didn’t enjoy about the novel? Well I found that the characters became a little annoying at times. They readily sleep about and are very focused on wealth and material things. I also found them to be a little immature at times, and felt that I was reading about women much younger. I would also warn readers that this novel is a little provocative with some raunchy sex scenes.

Overall I really enjoyed reading Blow Me. Lennie Ross successfully took a theme we all love and made it unique and fresh. This novel is a fun read, and it is entertaining to see the more unglamorous side of LA. Blow Me is like Sex and the City set in LA. If you love your chick lit with a focus on escaping into another life then I’m sure you will love Blow Me. I cannot wait to read more from Lennie Ross in the future. (less)

Daughter in law won this unfortunately named book on a Goodreads giveaway. The notes indicate that it is a satire of LA women, on the order of Sex and the City. Not so much. Full of pop culture name dropping, restaurant, wine, hotel, movie stars, etc. These women are desperate to get married, have marginal jobs, bad personalities, and empty pointless lives. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Felt sort of...meh...about it.

Dawn, Skylar, and Chloe are around forty years old. I don't know if it's because of the way they acted or because I'm in my twenties, but I kept picturing them as much younger. There were multiple times throughout the novel that I had to remind myself that these women were not, in fact, twenty somethings, but instead, they were older women who hadn't found their right paths in life yet. I wanted to give this book 4 stars, but I didn't love it as much as I had hoped. I won the book in a First Reads giveaway, and I was drawn to it because of it's name. A book called Blow Me? I figured it had to be funny. It was like Sexy and the City, but less classy.

The book is about three single friends (Skye, Dawn, and Chloe) around the age of 40 (give or take) living in Los Angeles. My biggest issue with this book was that I found it difficult to relate to the main character Skye. Skye was extremely materialistic. She slept around and didn't care as long as the men bought her clothes. I just found this hard to relate to and she was like this most of the book. I understand wanting to have nice clothes, but it seemed she would do anything to get them. There seemed to be a lot of focus on physical beauty, which I know is relevant in LA (since I live here). But it was too big a role in this book. There were a lot of times that Skye used her looks to get what she wanted and I just felt she lacked substance because of that. Other than being good in bed, it seemed she didn't have anything else going for her.

Now, on to Chloe. I feel I didn't really get to know Chloe like I did the other two. The book's description should instead say it is a story of TWO single women and sometimes their single friend, too. I understand that things happened in the book that made it so Chloe wasn't as involved, but even when similar things happened with the other girls, they were still playing a big part in the plot. Then at the end of the book, we finally hear from Chloe again. I forgot all about her by then. Also, we were able to get inside of Dawn and Skye's head a lot and see how they felt about themselves, others, and different situations. I felt that with Chloe, we learned more about her from how Skye and Dawn viewed her. Also, Chloe is from Canada and her accent comes out sometimes. We get it, she will drop the "H" in some words. It got annoying after the first few times. I also didn't care for Chloe as a character anyway, so I guess I shouldn't complain about her disappearing from the story for a while.

Without including any spoilers, I didn't care for the "happily ever after" that some of the women received.

Aside from the typos and grammatical errors, that was about as bad as the book got.

Okay, enough of the bad. I actually did enjoy reading the book. It wasn't boring at any point, it managed to hold my attention all the way through. It was a quick, easy read. It was funny at times, like I had hoped. I may have been able to better connect with the characters if they weren't about 20 years older than I am. Regardless, I will pass this book on to one of my friends.

One redeeming quality was Dawn. I felt she was the easiest to relate to. She was more level headed and the least materialistic out of all of them. I wish there had been a little more focus on here, because I did like her a lot.

In the end, it was a decent book. I didn't love it or hate it. I think there are women out there will love it and buy into the stereotypical LA image. But I also think women will have a problem with how materialistic a lot of the story is and all of the names that are dropped. If I were single and in my 40's, it would likely give me hope that that would soon change (as long as I was hot enough).(less)

I was fascinated with the lives of Skylar, Dawn, and Chloe. Set in the glitzy setting of Los Angeles, three very different women have forged a life for themselves and a tight friendship. (At least two of them did anyway.) Skylar's journey to finding herself and her purpose in life was rocky. Losing your job to two Barbie dolls and then burning your apartment down (hey, it was in the proverbial heat of the moment) is definitely rough...more

As Lennie says, if you are a Sex and the City fan, you are going to devour this book. If you enjoy reading about women's friendships, how through difficult times they help one another, you are doing to definitely love this book.

Blow Me is the epitome of chick lit!

Can't wait for Lennie's next one!
