I just checked this book random out of the library thinking Tanner might like it. He wasn't interested until we read the first few chapters together. I like just about anything from WWII era. This was a nice story written by an older man reminscing about his memories of being a child in France during the war. Nothing magnanimous happens but it's a great story of a child's perspective during war and some of the real emotions that they went through. I really liked it and so did Tanner. Good

Three girls working on a school report write a letter to an artist they see on TV, asking him about his experiences in WWII. His reply is a story composed of a series of connected vignettes of life in occupied France for his mother, two brothers, and people around them.

Another great story by Maguire. The premise with the girls (students) writing to an old person and getting him to tell his life story from WWII was neat. The young boy and his brothers think they are good liars but it turns out their mom is even better.

Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for a memoir-esque format but I really enjoyed this book a lot. For a book titled "The Good Liar", I found this book to be strikingly honest.

This is a story of 3 brothers who make a great game of seeing how many outrageous lies they can get away with. However when it comes to hiding Jews during WW2, the game turns more into a serious necessity.

Simple WWII historical novel. Great intro to the period for kids. This takes place in France during the occupation. Puts a real human touch on the situation.

A wonderful, thought-provoking book about French boys during WWII. I can't wait to have my son read it so we can discuss it together.

OK. Consistent voice. POV made for distance - looking back - that kept down emotional possibilities.

I thought this book had some very complex issues. I would not recomend it to kids under the 7th grade. I believe they could read it without difficulty, but the subject matter is deep.

a charming children's book easily read in a single sitting. it's written as a correspondence between modern day school children in America asking an old man to tell them stories of WWII. The man writes back and talks of his experience as a little boy growing up in France during the war. It's not the big grand spectacle of battle and bombings but the small interactions in a village. It's a great perspective through a child's eyes.

I read this one day sitting in the library while Amaria plunged the depths of the children's section. As a child, and as an adult too, my favorite way to discover historical periods is through historical fiction, so this book was really excellent and I'll be sure to have Amaria read it when she is old enough - maybe 4th or 5th grade. The non-sentimental handling of all the characters is what I specifically like about this WWII novel.
