I was frustrated with this book at first because after living in Hawaii and hearing about the impact of the missionaries from different perspectives I picked it up because I wanted to learn of their impact from a local. The first half or more goes over ancient Hawaiian life and faith and while I wasn't that interested in that, by the time I got to the missionaries and even life today I was able to have a much fuller understanding than I would have without such an introduction. This was a very interesting "read." Not terribly well written, but a fascinating treatise in support of the position that Hawaiians worshipped a single creator-God before the later addition of multiple gods and human sacrifice and legend took over the belief system. Lots of footnotes and references whihc made it seem quite scholarly. Even though a Christian myself, I found myself a bit skeptical as I read it, and I'm not sure why.
