This book drew me in from the first page! I haven't read a lot of time travel romance books but now I'm thinking maybe I should put more on my list! First we meet Jessica Delaney. My Truman

I enjoyed this book. The heroine, Jessica was very strong and plucky. Accidentally time traveling to 1881 Dodge City, Kansas wear jeans with a zipper (gasp), red stilettos and a leather jacket, she immediately drew the attention of the Sherriff. It was ok quite rightly describes my feelings towards this novel.

This was a very light read, which surprised me, considering it was a time-travel novel. But it could have easily been a novella. There was not a lot of serious conflicts involved. I like a lot of emotion and a sense of "realness" in my books, esp. when it comes to the characters. That sense of "realness" was lacking - and it had nothing to do with the time travel aspect. I just found that the author didn't describe Jessica and Truman in terms of their personalities, so I had no idea who they really were by the end of the novel. I didn't really know them and I didn't connect to them, they were very one dimensional to me.

I wasn't anticipating that. There was also a lack of an "adjusting period" that seems important when it comes to a time-travel novel. There was none of that in this novel. When Jessica traveled back to 1881 from 2011, I expected there to be small doses of reactions from Jessica to the new world she entered, and likewise from the people of 1881 to her. About half-way through the novel, I forgot she had even traveled back in time. Which was odd, because the way Jessica and EVERYONE else in the novel spoke (yes, even those in 1881) was very modern and they all seemed like they were in 2011 except in a town with no pluming or cell phones.

The writing was alright, but it lacked description when it needed it. I didn't find there was anything special about the love Jessica and Truman felt for each other - and it was a quite a long novel, so there was space for it if the author had wished it. It just seemed very cookie-cutter and based on how attractive they found the other. It all came down to this: it lacked emotion. Something you wish for in a novel that makes it seem real, makes the characters seem like real people, with real thoughts and feelings. It wasn't expressed very well at all and because I place such a high importance on that, I found it hard to look at this novel at anything but a light read that I could have done without. (less)

Honestly, I am getting really frustrated by book ratings, especially on Amazon. This author and book has a nearly 5 star rating on Amazon, so I bought it. However, I feel like it is entirely undeserved.

In my opinion, there are two three major flaws in this story, and several smaller ones.

* First, this is a time travel story. However, very little is made about the glaring differences that would certainly exist between a modern woman, and the early 1800's in Dodge city. Several people wander thro...more Honestly, I am getting really frustrated by book ratings, especially on Amazon. This author and book has a nearly 5 star rating on Amazon, so I bought it. However, I feel like it is entirely undeserved.

In my opinion, there are two three major flaws in this story, and several smaller ones.

* First, this is a time travel story. However, very little is made about the glaring differences that would certainly exist between a modern woman, and the early 1800's in Dodge city. Several people wander through the scene, when this woman first appears in stiletto heels, and only one character thinks (not speaks) that her shoes look like weapons. Her language draws little comment, and her modern sensitivities seem unaffected by necessity of having to adjust to 19th century hardships. We never hear her complain, or her her insecurities about how she should wear her hair, what about bathing, what about adjusting to the food, etc.

* There are also several glaring missing details. Upon showing up in the past, she is abruptly tossed into jail...where she spends some time. She never has to pee, or eat, or bathe. In fact throughout the story, these things rarely even pop up - other than a few meals that she is provided with. Also, upon finding another time traveler, she is so excited that she doesn't even ask where or when he came from. Little things like that. Another: she finally procured "sensible footwear". Well, what does that mean? What kind? What did they look like? Did she get blisters? Miss her Nikes? Heaven's! This had great potential, but the missing details meant that this entire aspect of the story missed the mark.

* Finally, and blaringly, is the conclusion of the story. Not only is it rushed...it is ridiculous! I admit I was able to look past other plot failings and enjoy the story up until the end. Before going back to her own time, the hero dies. However, after finding herself back in the future, she meets him - reincarnated and with most of his memories intact - in a museum parking lot. Upon finding him, in this new reincarnation, she takes absolutely no time to adjust to the idea...she is just simply in love immediately, and gets in the car with him where they drive off only to stop at a costume store to pick up Old West costumes to spice up their sex life. What?! Come on. Again, great missed opportunity for a more realistic believable ending that we readers could have invested in.

Regardless of how much 'success' this reader has had with other books, after this read I would not read her again...except that based on the inflated ratings of this book, I actually bought another of hers. So, I guess I will give her one more try, but I'm honestly not expecting much.

This is my first cowboy book and while I love a sexy man in a stetson, this story really left me disappointed. Wade was charming and sexy as hell and Jess was feisty and funny but I felt the story line was really lacking. I feel like MacLean just really wanted to focus on the relationship between the two but then took them both forever to get it on. I find that sometimes they are a little too silly for me to get into. On the other hand, never judge a book by its cover, right? I gave this one a shot though because the plot sounded interesting. My Thoughts:
This was a really sweet story. Not syrupy sweet...but heartwarmingly so. If you're looking for a steamy cowboy romance, sorry...this is not the book for you.

Jessica Delaney, a 21st century woman, is plunged back in time to the 1800s where she meets, is arrested by, and falls in love with the sheriff, Truman Wade.

Upon Jessica's immediate arrival into the Dodge City of the past she is accused of the murder of an outlaw, Left Hand Lou. She is immediately arrested by the gorgeous Sheriff Truman Wade who she can't seem to take her eyes off of. Truman is also instantly drawn to Jessica. He "arrests" her even though there is no need to because a reward has been offered for Lou’s death or capture. While she is imprisoned, Jessica and Truman trade barbs while actually flirting with each other. Truman knows Jessica has a secret and he does everything in his power to find out what it is. But during his investigation his feelings toward her start to grow. But Lou's band of outlaws come back and starts terrorizing Jessica for what they think she has taken from the slain outlaw. Now, the big gorgeous sheriff makes it his mission to protect Jessica...with his life if need be.

There are a few moments in the story where I was thinking, "Oh come on. Really?...you all are going to do this NOW?!?!" The first moment occurs when Jessica and Truman are being held by the band of outlaws that want the combination to the bank safe. The outlaws have ensconced them in a bunker until their leader can come to question them. And by question I mean hurt one until the other one talks. Jessica, who has only been in town for a few days at this point, fervently announces that she loves Truman and she wants him to make love to her...at that moment. Really Jess...couldn't have picked a better time to do that, huh? Of course Truman willingly obliges her and they survive that harrowing moment. Joy!

My second "oh come on" moment occurs when Truman had to arrest Jessica...again...because she was suspected of murdering the local drunk who harassed her since her arrival. He was harmless but a nuisance. The town is incensed that Junebug Jess (her outlaw moniker) has killed yet another person in their town. There is a very real possibility that the town will lynch her. Of course, her protector, Truman can't allow this to happen because he has now determined that he loves her too. He is going to run away with her and become fugitives together. During alllllllll of this, they are once again "getting it on". Really...priorities much?

Fast forwarding through the story, the outlaws are apprehended and everything is right with the world...or is it?!?! We discover that the outlaws are not the true source of all the death being laid at Jessica's feet. There are others colluding to rob the bank. During an encounter with them, Truman is shot and killed and Jessica is somehow thrust forward in time. Jessica awakes to find that she is in a hospital room with her parents...heartbroken and pregnant. Pregnant? But didn't she have an IUD? Dang time travel done screwed with the girls’ contraceptive! But Jessica is remotely thrilled that she has carried a piece of Truman through time with her.

In her grief, Jessica goes to the library to see if she can find out any information on Truman. And sadly, she does when she reads an article proclaiming his death. She is heartbroken all over again. But during her library investigation Jessica discovers that there is someone else who is also looking into the details of that time period. Dr. Jake Spencer contacts Jessica and requests that she meet with him. Jessica cautiously (optimistic) agrees to meet with Jake. She is positively shaken when she first spies him. He is the spitting image of Truman, swagger and all, except that his eyes are green and not the beautiful blue that she remembered. Jake asks Jessica some questions about where she was during her missing time and announces to her that he knows about her time travel and her relationship with Truman. Why?............wait for it..........because he is Truman *duh duh daaaaah duh*. There is some mumbo jumbo about Truman's spirit being in Jake and his memories flood Jake as if they are his own. And tada you have a melding of the two souls...TruJake :). Jessica is overwhelmed and in shock but once flooded by the timeless love she feels for a man she thought she had lost. And they live happily ever after.

I love history so the flashback to the past was outstanding. This story was enjoyable and interesting. Truly deserving of the four star rating.(less)

I usually don't go for time travel novels, but this was a free read during their Twelve Days of Christmas give-away at All Romance eBooks. I have to admit that I liked it a lot. A time travel Western!!! Ke-wl. I’m guessing here, but I think this one is one of the the books in the new Amazon Line that Connie Brockway is part of and can I just say I am So In with this? I’m glad I have an i-pad with a Kindle app so I can read these books. A Western Time Travel isn’t a trope you see very often. Since I really like both, that’s why I was sold on this book right away.

OMG, I just finished reading "Taken by the Cowboy" by Julianne MacLean!
This is the fifth book that I read of hers and I was not dissapointed!

I am indifferent about this book. It was entertaining, but not compelling. I enjoy time travel and historical romance books. Loved this book. It's been ages since I've read a time-travel that I enjoy. Like any time-travel, you have to avoid looking for gaps in logic because it's a TIME TRAVEL and will never make logical sense.

Not sure why it's called Taken By the Cowboy since the hero is a sheriff and former bounty hunter but he rides a horse so maybe that qualifies as 'cowboy' for romance novel purposes. Actually the western part of the book wasn't too bad. The book didn't get bogged down in lengthy explanations of how the time travel occurred so it wasn't nerdy. It is a romance so it had a bit of the obligatory throbbing bellies and hot blood bursting through her veins, but not horrifically syrupy, the sex was actually pretty tame, and for my expectations was disappointing.

Specifically what I was hoping for was a journey into the sexual tension that would exist between a straight laced lawman with little sexual experience (he did not frequent whore houses), and imbued in the misconceptions of the time, and a modern sexually experienced woman. I thought there would be a exploration into the different expectations and mores. It didn't happen.

Aside from the charming scene of him not knowing what the zipper was on her jeans. there was very little cross cultural sexual shock. He expressed no surprise that Jessica was very hot and rather sexually experienced, and demanding. The book did describe her shock at general societal differences such as her difficulty with a corset, but the exploration that I was hoping for didn't happen.

The sex was straitlaced romancy intercourse and there was no wonder on his part of why this woman was so sexually aggressive in defiance of the mores of the time. A proper woman was supposed to be sexually naive and while tolerating the needs of her man, found them regrettably base. I was hoping for a scene where she introduced him to the wonders of oral sex and he responded with typical Victorian moral shock, but would eventually acquiesce to her teaching him how to properly pleasure a woman. Alas it didn't happen.

For me the lack of cross cultural shock made the sex disappointing, what could have been a unique exploration into cultural mores and expectations was just plain old romance novel sex, handled as if both protagonist were from the 21st century, and rather uninspired and tame sex at that. A disappointment for me.

A review at Amazon mentioned that apparently the IUD didn't make it through the time warp. Good point. It might have been interesting if Angus found it laying next to her watch!

The time travel regarding Truman was glossed over and a bit hokey, but my feelings on time travel books the less said about methods of how it happens, the better. The interest to me is the contrasts and paradoxes resulting from the travel, not the particular method of travel.

MAN! I read this book in a day, obviously having a hard time putting it down! I wasn't sure at first what exactly to expect from this book. I certainly had no idea it was a time travel romance but that added such a uniqueness to the story!

Basically, a young woman is in a terrible car accident, and when she wakes up, finds herself in 1881. Shortly thereafter she's finds herself in an even more tight spot when she's brought in for questioning in a murder she didn't commit. Enter sheriff Truman!

I didnt know what to expect when I first started reading this book. Taken by the Cowboy was one of those Twitter feed posts that grabbed my attention. "Free - Taken by the Cowboy" I didn't even read the blurb. I just saw "free" and I saw "cowboy" and clicked to download. Even after I loaded the book onto my trusty Kindle, I still didn't read the book blurb. So I'm reading away and right at the very beginning of the book, I was captured. Emotionally sad but gripping beginning. Then the next chapter, wow same thing. So I'm clicking away and then I wonder what the heck is going here and THEN I read the blurb. Taken by the Cowboy is a time travel book. Awesome. What a surprise. I was not expecting that from just glancing at the yummy front cover. So now that I understood what was happening, I hunkered down to enjoy the story.

I do enjoy time travel stories. They often leave me wondering what I would do if I was in that situation. I believe that I would have handled myself pretty much the same way that Jessica, the female protagonist of Taken by the Cowboy did. That is great news because it made the story not so far fetched.

Jessica is transported back in time to around the 1888 time era and is in Dodge City, Kansas. She is stumbling around town there wondering what movie set she fell into and in less than an hour she is somehow implicated in committing murder against a highly wanted man. Enters in Sheriff Truman Wade and her journey back in time became that much more interesting.

Taken by the Cowboy was a truly fun and enjoyable read. The old west is not romanticized and there is no shortage of cow dung stink and the lack of women's rights is apparent. Even her clothing was not made out to be fabulously garbed out. Jessica or shall I say "Junebug Jess" as she is now affectionately called stumbles into dangerous situation after dangerous situation. Trouble finds her like a fly to a pile of cow dung. As Truman and Jessica become closely acquainted, Jessica is becoming torn on the matter of returning back to her own time or staying to be with Truman if the opportunity presents itself. I felt her befuddlement. The confusion was so well written and it was certainly left up to the reader to decide what they would do in that circumstance.

I completely enjoyed the story and I loved the writing. I will certainly not hesitate to look up this author, Julianne MacLean's other works.

Aside from a few minor discrepancies, I was really into this book. I loved the characters (although I had some trouble with Jessica's reaction to discovering she traveled back in time, it was a bit too blase), the premise was excellent, I was constantly wondering how these two people would ultimately achieve their HEA.

Plus I had a hard time putting the book down when I needed to do other things (that practically screams "Winner!" right there). But, the end of this book really ruined the story fo...more

Jessica Delaney is your normal girl. She has a loving mother and father. A brother and a fiancé. When the book opens up, Jessica and her family are in a waiting room at the hospital as her brother is being operated on from a gunshot wound. Jessica is dealing not only the sorrow of the day, but the realization that her fiancé really is self absorb since he wouldn’t even come to the hospital to be with her. The operating doctor comes out and gives the family the bad news that they couldn’t save her brother.

We jump a year into the future and Jessica is driving back to her parents house. She has broken up with her fiancé and is contemplating moving back to Dodge to be with her family. The rainstorm she is driving in is getting worse. She hits a puddle of water, hydro-planes while being hit by lightning and is sent 100 years into the past.

Once Jessica awakens she walks into Dodge, but the Dodge of the 1800s and instantly is accused of gunning down a wanted man. Confused and in denial, Jessica bumbles her way through the interrogation of Sheriff Wade. Wanting to get to the bottom of things and for her protection, Sheriff Wade takes Jessica and locks her up.

Sheriff Truman Wade is a very private man with a past he doesn’t want to share or even revisit. He knows something is suspicious about Jessica, but he just can’t put his finger on it. She is dresses funny and uses words he isn’t familiar with. But he can’t keep Jessica for delivering Lou, dead or alive. So he puts in the reward and releases her to the local lawyer who has become her friend. Still he does some checking and can’t find a record of Jessica anywhere.

When Lou’s gang comes looking for Jessica, Truman feels a need to protect this woman. In protecting his woman, she becomes his woman. Secrets are bared and love overcomes all, including time.

Whoah! This story was so much fun to read. There were delicious love scenes, enough secrets to break your heart and time travel that unites two hearts. There is a heartbreaking ending that also twists you up. I would only say the ending seemed rushed to me and I would have liked to see it in more detail. The time travel element was a little weird especially when it is explained. Sheriff Truman is the alpha male that you drool over in a book. He does everything in his power to protect Jessica and tries hard not to fall in love with her.

Jessica also tries hard not to get involved. She just wants to go back to her time with her family. But as time moves on, events happen and she falls in love with Truman. Through issues and fear, the two embrace and come to terms with their love as the book meets its strategic high point.

This book is a whole lot of yeehaw, finding true love and deciding what you really want out of life. Loved it!(less)

If I could give 2.5 stars I'd do it but only because the first few opening chapters and the two at the end really got my attention. If the Kindle had a book cover, I probably wouldn't have ordered this book. As much as I enjoy naked men, one man in particular, I don't usually buy books with covers that objectify them. However, the book was free, and I like time travel alright. Westerns are neither here-nor-there for me. I can handle romance, if it isn't the entire plot. I rather dislike the titles they put on these books because this title really makes this book sound like one thing when it is anything but.

This was a better than average time-travel book with a likable hero and a healthy dose of adventure and romance. I really enjoyed this read! This storyline was very entertaining and towards the end of it I was in tears but Jessica and Truman do get their HEA. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a time traveled romance with a western twist.

This was a great story!

Jessica who was albeit not my favorite character in the beginning, became one of my favorites in the end. When looking at the cover, I did not expect the plot that this novel has. What a story. So hard to put this one down. I have never read anything like this one. To be tossed back in to the past; the same world but different. 100% different. To share something wonderful and different and then have it reaped away at one min.
