Amalie Howard manages to take two elements we see used in hundreds of different ways across an enormous number of YA books and breathe such a fresh new life into them. She stayed true to the darker aspects of witches and vampires while adding her own original spin on the mythology. Rather than just imply that, 'yes, this vampire is good and does not kill, but still struggles to keep his fangs in place' she shows the conflicting emotions, the terrible all-consuming temptation and she allows her c...more

AMALIE HOWARD'S "BLOODSPELL" (A REVIEW)

Move over Stephenie Meyer! I must say that I enjoyed this book much better. The fact that the heroine is not so completely dependent on others to always save her was not only refreshing but much more exciting! Victoria is a young woman on the brink of losing everything when she finds out that her heritage is far more than it seems. She's tortured by the history of her grandmother and in complete denial until she learns from her familiar, a cat by the name o...more

Please note: I read and reviewed this book in October, 2011. I'm adding the disclosure that I received a copy of this book from JKS Communications (the author's publicist) in exchange for an honest review and updating the formatting.

My Synopsis: Victoria was more or less a normal girl – her parents were killed when she was nine and she has subsequently lived with a woman she calls Aunt Holly, who was a very close friend of her grandmother. She is attending a private prep school in a small town i...more

This is just going to be a brief review. Bloodspell really surprised me with its twists and turns. It was really nice to read about both witches and vampires together in one story. The characters were brilliantly flashed out. I'm really glad that Victoria is one strong girl and could kick some ass. Christian is swoon-some and an eye candy with his dark blond hair and silver eyes. Vampire with silver eyes. That's a first indeed. The secondary characters were very interesting as well; they each ha...more

Firstly a big thank you to Jkscommunications for sending me this book.

I really loved this book. It was definitely different than any other paranormal book dealing with vampires and witches. I loved the way Amalie Howard brought each and every character out. She showed the real person that they truly are inside. The main character, Victoria was interesting. She wasn't that sort of girl who new everything but you will always find that she wanted to do the right thing and never hurt anyone.

Review: I received this book as an ARC for review through the publicist and I was extremely excited to dive into it after reading the synopsis. Also, I absolutely fell in love with the cover of this book. I think it’s so gorgeous, one of the best I’ve seen so far this year!
I loved the characters in this book. Victoria “Tori” Warrick finds out on her 17th birthday that she is a witch. Not just any witch...more

I have to say that i have a love-hate relationship with this book. The story was very interesting and quite original for the paranormal genre that is flooding the YA books nowadays. I have to say i did enjoy it a lot. so why only 3 stars? Its probably because in the middle of the book i grew tired of the "i love you but i cant love you, so lets break up and make up, break up and make up" repetitiveness of the relationship between Victoria and Christian.Seriously it got so bad i contemplated just...more

Thanks to Netgalley and Langdon Street Press for giving me this book to review.

Victoria Warrick has always known she is different from everyone at her school but when a boy takes his bullying to far, she somehow but them both in hospital. On her 17th birthday she is given a journal that belonged to her grandmother which tells her about an ancestor of hers and discovers that she is a witch with dangerous blood power...more

Dark. Thrilling. A fantastic debut!

I'm not really sure what I was expecting when I read the synopsis, but I got way more than I bargained for with Bloodspell! Amalie Howard turned a now seemingly common topic of vampires and witches and made it extraordinary. The mythology that she weaves into the story is fantastic. The plot is complex, full of action, and does not shy away from the dark aspects of vampires and magic.

To my delight, Bloodspell did not read...more

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. I mean, look at that cover! It’s so pretty! But alas, Bloodspell did not live up to its prettiness.

The book seemed to have an interesting premise: girl discovers that she’s not only a witch, but a cursed witch. With her new powers comes her family history and all of the sworn eternal enemies as well, not to mention, she bleeds black blood.

Interesting, right? Well, kinda.

This book follows the premise of tons of other YA books ou...more

To be honest, the synopsis doesn't do the book justice. And to be fair, the book shares similar plot devices with other books which feature an 'outsider' female and a vampire male love interest. I've read those books and their fallen angel counterparts. It made me nervous to pick this book up for that reason, as I've found some of those other YA offerings to be rather boring.

Here's the difference between them and Amalie Howard's Bloospell: her writing is better, her characters more dynamic, and...more

Victoria – Tori – was an outcast at her school. She never really thought much about it. But what she didn't know then was that there was more to it. On her seventeenth birthday, her aunt Holly gave her a gift from her grandmother. The journal inside it held her family’s history and secret. She found out that she was a strong witch just like her ancestors. She struggled to accept this reality, even coming to the point that she intentionally stayed away from...more

Bloodspell is more than just your average YA vampire novel. Amalie Howard took something as unoriginal as vampire's and made in to something original and I love her take of vamps and witches.

The story begings with Victoria on her 17th birthday and what her aunt Holly gives her as a present from her dead grandma she recives a music box,Journal and a amulet necklace. As her day at school starts her powers start to manifest and she has no idea what is happening to her then comes the accide...more

I don't typically write reviews (other than starring them) but I couldn't put this book down. Reading anything in a day is a big effort for me, but I really wanted to finish this. Writing was great, characters kept me guessing, and the plot had lots of twists and turns. What took me by surprise about this novel was its complexity, yet the story was still easy to get through. It just worked. Big fan also of multiple perspectives, like Cassandra Clare's books. Definitely recommended!

I really enjoyed BLOODSPELL, It was unique with a great mix of dark elements. The main character Victoria (Tori) was strong and willful. She is thrust into a world she had no idea that existed and to top it off she is more powerful then anyone could imagine but she didn't take anything sitting down and was determined to come out on the good side. Christian Devereux is an old vampire that refuses to give up his humanity. Although a relationship...more

I got this as an ARC. It's a great book... It's about a girl who finds out that she's a witch on her 17th bday. Yes, there are witches and vampires in this book but it's not another silly YA book. The writing is terrific and the characters are great and have real chemistry with each other. The summary on the book cover doesn't describe how terrific the plot is.

Definitely looking foward to more books by Amalie Howard!

I love the premise of this book. Witch with incredible power meets vampire who harbors his own secrets. In many books the vampires have the ultimate power, but in this one it's the witch who holds the control.

Victoria grows up unaware of her powers, until she inherits a necklace and a journal on her birthday that explains what she is and the nature of her powers. It also opens her eyes to the creatures that inhabit the world around her. At her new school, witches, werewolves and vam...more

After the tragic death of her parents, Victoria Warrick moved in with her grandmother's best friend, Holly. Starting her junior year in a new school with no friends and viewed as a freak isn't easy, especially since Victoria feels that she's different. On her 17th birthday she is given an old family heirloom from her grandmother, a music box and an antique amulet. Within the music box are letters, some of them obvio...more

I can’t. It’s no use, I just can’t finish this book. The characters, their contrived, useless conflicts, the intriguing world that is hopelessly undeveloped and, above all, the immense cliché abuse just defeat me, Not only can I not finish this book but, since I was tempted to DNF it after a mere 10%, going any further would be unfair to the other DNF books that I finally gave up on.

Now, saying you’re tempted to give up by 10% is pretty extreme – but this book begins with so many of the classic...more

Basically it's Twilight, but Twilight if Bella Swan had a personality, backbone, power of her own, and no parents.

I also couldn't get over the fact that the main male character's name was Christian, which is the name E.L. James used in her fanfic version of Twilight-turned-published erotica novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Also the character Angie kept making me think of Angela, in Twilight. Both shy, though ultimately different.

The strange thing is I didn't dislike this book, I thought it was an ent...more

It would have been interesting to see Howard explore the blood in connection with her heritage a little more deeply. What exactly makes it so powerful? Is there a genetic combination or link from the outside that makes it so omnipotent?
I didn't find the love story between the main character and Christian very convincing perhaps because he was very borderline ignorant in his approach to her.
That seems to be a plot element many authors in the YA genre are reproducing like bees to pollen and honey....more

Bloodspell was intriguing book which plot captured my attention and made it difficult to put the book down. The forbidden romance, supernatural element and the love triangles all made for an interesting read. There were some parts that were some parts of the novel that I felt were copied from previous novels and TV shows. I did not enjoy the use of the familiar and the mention of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I believe that the reference appeals to a younger audience and was misguided. I think that...more

Bloodspell by Amalie Howard

Bloodspell is a fun and great book, the only problem is, it reminds me too much of Twilight. We have the instant lovestory between Tori and Christian, with no really reason why. Then further in the book we see a love triangle between Tori, Christian and Gabriel. Do not understand me wrong, I liked the book, but to be honest it is a knock off of The...more

I'll put this out there up front. It took me a while to get to read Amalie Howard's Bloodspell. I picked up Bloodspell a few months ago but hadn't put it on the read-next list yet. I haven't read a supernatural story in a while and I wasn't looking to read one right now but… as things like this go sometimes I found myself without a book, ready to leave the front door on vacation for Florida when I saw Bloodspell on my shelf and it called to me. I love when that happens. From the first page this...more

Amalie Howard proves that there can be a new and unique twist to the ever-popular vampire/witch theme so prevalent in today’s Young Adult genre.

Strange things are beginning to happen to Victoria (Tori) Warrick and after a mysterious illness lands her in the hospital for a lengthy stay, she transfer to a new school to hopefully begin a new life. That life is beyond anything she could imagine and not in a good way.

On her 17th birthday,...more

This book made my head ache the entire way.

I hate to be the type of person that does this, but yes, I could not help but see how nauseatingly similar this book was to the Twilight series. The only difference (yes, there IS a difference...) is that the girl actually isn't incapable. So at least there's that.

(view spoiler)[Victoria is the girl who had some issues with her old school and moved to a new school (sound familiar?). She meets this really hot guy there and they, like, instantly connect!...more

I know most of you have read the Twilight series, well I haven't. I have a pretty good idea of the storyline though, and I know the writing was amazing because I have read The Host (which is one of my favorites) both by Stephanie Meyer.

So with that being said, I have a feeling for Twilight fans, this book is going to sound similar.
