Woodward, together with his colleague Roald Hoffman, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the 60's for their elucidation of population rules for molecular orbitals. Anyone who has ever created luminol in an organic chemistry lab will be familiar with these rules - the luminescence of luminol is a direct consequence of (temporary) violation of the Woodward-Hoffman rules.

This volume goes into exquisite detail about how these rules arise, their evolution in steadily more complicated orbital systems,
