Science fiction with more purpose than just entertain. H. G. Wells surprised me a lot with The War of the Worlds early this year, and I was in the mood for something short and great. The Country of the Blind is very good, it deals with intelectual diferences due to diferent habilities, in this case, using the sight as example. An interesting read, perfect after a complicated book or while having a hard time at school or work.

(review in English)

"In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." - Proverb of Bagota
I enjoy Wells story-telling immensely, and this tale is an example of what makes him great. In a short story, he weaves an adventure that answers all of the following questions but one. Guess which one:

How would life change for human beings if we had all been born without vision?
Is there any such thing as a handicap? Why?
Would you give up your eyes for love?
Could you love someone who does not understand your passions?

I didn’t read this short story until I took Disability and Literature in the spring of my junior year of college. Like a few of the other texts I’ve posted about, I like this story because it can be read from a couple different angles. You could look at the time period in which it was published (1911), and read it as a piece that deals with the issues of imperialism. I like this story because it’s science fiction with a purpose. Oftentimes, I think sci-fi is cast aside in the classroom because i ...more

"How would you describe the colour red to a blind person?" This common creative writing prompt is stretched to an extreme in H G Wells' short story 'The Country of the Blind', in which a mountaineer named Nunez stumbles into a secluded valley whose residents have lived without eyesight for fourteen generations.

At first, Nunez confidently assumes his sight will give render him a superior in this sightless realm, but finds that there are factors that he has not accounted for. An entire ecosystem h

I loved the deeper subtext of this story: just because one has superior knowledge does not give them and advantage over a more primitive society. In fact, the power of a sociocultural entity is such that an outsider, given time, will start to accept the "correctness" of the entity's worldview, even if the outsider knows it violently collides with objective reality.

Well work reading.

I heard that there are two versions of this short story. The differences is only the ending. First, the original one ends with the scene when the main character, Nunez, climbs the mountain. Second, the 1939 revised version ends with the scene when Nuñez sees from a distance that there is about to be a rock slide. He attempts to warn the villagers, but again they scoff at his “imagined” sight. He flees the valley during the slide, taking Medina-Saroté with him. I read the original version. It giv ...more

In 1866, (Herbert George) H.G. Wells was born to a working class family in Kent, England. Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper's apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government schol ...more
