I've been a regular reader of this as a web comic for a number of years. I finally decided that it was time I showed my support by actually purchasing the first Omnibus for my collection.
The book itself is very nice, comes as a hardcover with nice glossy paper pages and good printing quality.
I've been a fan of Phil Foglio's art since his Myth Adventures / Phil & Dixie strips / D'Arc Tangent days. In a world of quasi super-realism comic book super heroe...more

I would easily rate this 5 stars if the first volume had not been so rocky. I found it slightly confusing. I did not appreciate being thrown into a convoluted story with no explanation.
So, now that I've voiced my complaint, I can still highly recommend this series. I eagerly look forward to the next, which I thankfully have. Well, for around the first hundred pages...I was bored and just...didn't want to read this thing. It might have been that I was in a bad mood, but I didn't laugh out loud once. This was a light-hearted, frenetic, fluffy tale in a steampunk-esque world. I enjoyed reading this, but especially enjoyed the hunt for the jokes the artist hid in the backgrounds. Be sure to read the titles of books and labels of bottles as they are encountered.
It is a silly tale, so if you are not in the mood, you'd only be annoyed. The world most strongly reminded me of Robert Lynn Asprin's Myth Adventures series. Pulled out the old Myth Adventures illustrated version we had on the shelf, and...more

So here’s the thing. Girl Genius is a Hugo-winning webcomic, and the entire archive is available online. And I’ve tried several times to read it … and was never able to get into it. However, when Tor’s review copy showed up in the mail, I devoured the entire book in a day and a half.
I think the full-color artwork, with all its detail, was just too much for me to read online. But when packaged in such a gorgeous hardcover book, it all works. It’s a fun steampunk adventure with kick-butt men and w...more

Quick & Dirty: This graphic novel is a mix of machines, mad scientists, and mayhem.
Opening Sentence: Now, this isn’t a Heterodyne story like your Mama tells you when she tucks you into bed at night…well, not exactly.

I've enjoyed Girl Genius since the very beginning - back in 2001 when Phil and Kaja Foglio published it as a quarterly 30 page comic book. Complex worldbuilding that doesn't slow down to try to explain itself, storytelling that is simultaneously dramatic and humorous, plot lines that surprise while relying on a reader's understanding of standard tropes, this story has it all.

The Girl Genius online comic series (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic...) is a frenetic mash of sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, humor, and romance. While I have a full GG collection already, I did go ahead and pick up this volume (which covers the first three traditional books) for convenience and loaning purposes.
Unlike the original releases, the first book has an after-the-fact coloring done on it, in Oz-like murk while Agatha's Spark is suppressed. It's also in slightly smaller, shelf-friendlier size (though the various Easter Egg background details are still visible).

3.5 stars really. If not for the clunky, poorly written first book, (The Beetleburg Clank) then I would have give this four solid stars.
Agatha Clay, some what scatty, dreams of being a scientist some day, though the fact that everything she creates tends to blow up, sees her set to remain an assistant for life. That is until one day her trilobite locket is stolen and she begins creating machines in her sleep dressed only in her underwear. Machines that actually work. Could it be that she really...more

I have been meaning to read Girl Genius for a long time; many people have urged me to check it out. I couldn't get through it on the web site so an omnibus is ideal.
The story is pretty awesome, I like the characters so far and I anticipate that the world building will be excellent. I, however, really dislike the art. The proportions are weird and constantly changing, sometimes someone's arm will be like 2 or 3 sizes too big in one panel and only a little too big in the next. The coloring style m...more

I originally picked up this title after seeing that it had won an award (Ingatz I think) and was dubious. Why? Because the art is, in my humble opinion, awful. The plentiful barrage of machines look okay, but the people do not. The Art is amerimanga-esk with weirdly proportioned people, bizarre shading that makes everything look like plastic, and all around visual ick. But, despite these flaws, the story is very fun to read. I am a fan of witty dialogue and quirky characters who indulge in verba...more
I don't know. I should have liked this book. After all, it was chock full of steampunky goodness and gorgeous clanky robots, but...
-The artwork is W-A-Y too manga-ish, with exaggerated facial expressions and hard to follow action scenes.
-The plot is convoluted with too many characters, yet every few pages, another one is introduced.
-There's a jarring switch from lovely sepia tones (which seem better suited for the steampunk theme) to brilliant, day-glo colors. (Sorry - but I left my black light...more

I just wasn't in the mood for this, although it was highly recommended. The artwork was too dense and the print too small for me to comfortably read while eating lunch - prime reading time for me! I might try again later, as the concepts were interesting.
It isn't exactly sleep that Agatha awakens from, but she definitely wakes up. Although the reader may know who she is from the beginning (the character list at the beginning is a dead giveaway), she doesn't know until the end of this volume, and her ignorance can be quite amusing. The characters in the book are multi-faceted; even the bad guys aren't really bad--they just have slightly different priorities than one might wish. This book is exciting and suspenseful, with a strong female lead, and...more
Picked this graphic novel up on whim at the library. Overall the book was a interesting read. Issues: panels and plot were a bit convoluted at times; female bodies over-exaggerated (i.e. huge perky breasts, teeny-tiny waists, etc), gore occurs but is not fully explained. I know the body image issue is prevalent among graphic novels & comic books but I found it more annoying than usual today. Perhaps if she didn't spend so much of the exposition in her flimsy underwear...

I’m not much of a comic book connoisseur. Growing up in Belgium, I used to love bandes dessinées (or stripboeken, as they’re called in my native tongue Dutch): Asterix, Tintin, and hundreds of other famous and less famous titles. Later on, I grew into liking more experimental works by visionaries like the recently deceased Moebius, and later again, I read some of the modern English language classics like Watchmen and The Sandman. Current graphic novels or comics are something I just don’t know m...more

So glad to have this in hard copy! Of course, everything in here is available online for free, but there's something wonderful about having access to it without needing an internet connection.

I don't typically read much graphic art, but a friend thrust this in my hands and said "Read this." so I did. The story turned out to be interesting, although not really my thing...I'm not into steampunk, which this seemed to be (not that I'm a big expert on the subject). I had a really hard time following the art and therefore the story--the print was tiny and art was so crowded, busy, and dark. I'm sort of curious how the next stories go, but will probably only read them if my friend forcibly...more

Girl Genius is well....is a collection of everything awesome in science fiction and fantasy brought together to form its own genre. You have steampunk, dieselpunk, really primitive yet advanced cyberpunk and biopunk.

So in short you have, Airships, clock-work robots, mech-walkers, and these amusing creatures with German/Austrian accents called Jagers Monsters and the various 'constructs', which have been genetically engineered. And that i...more

Time to further broaden my steampunk horizons! I'm finally reading Girl Genius. I read Phil & Dixie when I was in high school and in the ever-popular Alternate Reality club... a group for gamers. It took me awhile to make the connection between the gaming comic and Girl Genius, but I was thrilled when I finally figured it out.

My husband started reading the Girl Genius web comic last summer and I've read much (but not all) of the series with him. Since we've been enjoying the online version, we bought the first (currently only) omnibus (although volumes 4 and 5 are available in print form too). I'm hoping that once volume 6 is in print, a second omnibus will be published. This first omnibus contains volumes 1, 2 and 3 of the comic.

I tried, I really did, but there didn't seem to be any character development and the action kept shifting and shifting. I think I got about 1/3 of the way through before I was able to stop flipping back to the pages at the beginning of the book with character bios. It wasn't too long after that point that I finally gave up on the book all together. I wanted to like it, since I used to read and adore "What's New with Phil and Dixie" in Dragon, but I didn't.
Girl Genius is one of my favourite comic series, and this omnibus release of the first three volumes is absolutely gorgeous. It's a bit smaller (dimensions-wise) than the individual volumes released by Studio Foglio, but I prefer the hardcover format overall. It is sturdier, and you can open it fully without breaking the spine.
I really hope Tor continues releasing the series in these omnibus editions. I will cheerfully go out and buy them all.

I'd seen references to this series and never got around to ordering any of them, then this last week the local comic store had this on the shelf, and I got a copy.
This is a very fun read, somewhat steam-punkish in style. The story at times can get a little confusing, but overall where the story ends up at the end of this volume was quite satisfying. The material is intended for high school students through adults. Sometimes the story gets slightly racy (in a PG sense).

A fun romp through an Interesting world. The characters are not always what they first appear to be. I like how the antagonists are motivated and how the book plays with common tropes. One, minor, character keeps insisting that everything is revolving around him (for example). As a comic book, this is mostly just set up. But as long as you were not expecting any resolution it doesn't get much more fun than this.
This omnibus editions contains volumes 1-3 in black and white. Each volume was better than the one before...hope this continues! Girl Genius is a wild blend of manga, comic and steam punk. The steam punk creature machines are terrific but the storyline is confusing. Would recommend reading the individual volumes rather than the omnibus and I do hope in future volumes Agatha Clay gets a wardrobe change (those pjs have become annoying).
I get that Girl Genius is kind of a big deal in the Steampunk literary world. I just didn't get that into it. The first quarter of the book has some really confusing art. It's hard to tell what's going on. The rest of the book's art is great. I just couldn't get into the story all that well. But, if you like the more technology aspect of Steampunk then this graphic novel is probably for you.
Great story + great art = a great book. The story of Agatha Clay discovering her true identity is full of adventure and humor. Despite being dropped into the middle of the story, I never felt lost or confused. This comic will appeal to fans who like superheroes, steampunk, action, strong girl characters, dystopias. There's even a bit of romance.
