First impressions: Though it lacked the endearing qualities I loved in the first book of the series, CAKE ON A HOT TIN ROOF highlights bakery owner Rita Lucero’s savvy for solving murders she unwittingly becomes involved in.
What really worked: The story is set in New Orleans in the days leading up to Mardi Gras. Ms. Brady has a talent for bringing the vibrant qualities of the city to life. The rich descriptions of the colorful characters, the parties and the food really draw the reader into the...more

Mardi Gras was never so stressful as first time participant, Chef Rita Lucero finds out as new owner of New Orleans bakery, Zydeco. Having inherited the business from her husband, Rita begins to learn the chaos and confusion of making hundreds of King Cakes daily. It is so stressful that Rita is almost overwhelmed.
Then her Aunt and Uncle arrived unannounced from Albuquerque, New Mexico and the stress heightens. What to do but continue her schedule and include Tia and Tio. Rita's also inherited a...more

More of a mystery than the second one and I think that between the examples of writing from the first and the second, the third will be a very nice blend of character and mystery.
A few things that ticked me off though:
Still no description of Rita and Sullivan. If there were then it wasn't done with enough panache to make me remember.
Nestor is a jerk. It's very hard to sympathize with a jerk and I felt that if we had learned some of the things about Nestor that made him more human, earlier, th...more

Rita Lucero is settling into her new life in New Orleans, taking over her dead husband's custom cake shop Zydeco. This was a quick read, and I loved the ambience of New Orleans in the Carnival time before Mardi Gras. Rita is surprised by a visit from her Aunt Yolanda and Uncle Nestor from New Mexico, who did not appear in the first book, but were mentioned as the adults who raised her. A prominent local businessman, Daddy Boudreaux, is murdered at a Carnival party hosted by Rita, and somehow her...more
Not as good as the first in this series, this one introduces the aunt and uncle who raised Rita when she was orphaned and surprise her by visiting in the middle of Mardi Gras, a frantically busy season. Her uncle becomes the main suspect in the murder of a man he met a couple of hours earlier. The police detective is barely present so the interplay between them is missing. She tries to solve this one on her own with scenes that are improbable. There's very little character development with the b...more
Pastry chef Rita Lucero is still learning the ropes at Zydeco Cakes, the bakery she inherited from her ex-husband. Her second in command is trying to give the bakery an online presence and hounding Rita every day to start a blog. Add that to it's carnival season in New Orleans and they are filling tons of orders for King cakes and Rita is expected to host a Mardi Gras party for hundreds of her ex's closet friends. Then as if she doesn't have enough to do she gets an unexpected visit from her aun...more
Cake On A Hot Tin Roof is the second in the A Piece Of Cake Mystery series.
It is only a couple weeks away from Mardi Gras and quite naturally all the bakeries are struggling to stay ahead of the game. Zydeco is just starting to recover from a loss of business after the murder of the owner, Phillipe, a few months ago. His almost ex-wife, Rita, is now owner as is barely able to keep her hear above water. Rita's mother-in-law is calling to remind her of the very important pre-Mardi Gras party the s...more

I could not wait to jump into this 2nd book of this series. I was not disappointed at all. I really loved that it takes place in New Orleans and the characters are really beginning to blossom.
Rita is thrown into hosting a party that she did not want to do, but of course, loving Miss Frankie the way she does, she could not disappoint her. She has King Cakes to make for her customers, Aunt Yolanda and Uncle Nestor dropping in for a surprise visit, a website hanging over head to get up and running...more

I didn't like this one as much as I liked the first one. The mystery was a bit soft, and while there were a lot of viable suspects, the end didn't really come as any surprise. I was more that a little put off by the hostility shown by quite a few of the secondary characters towards the protagonist, Rita. These are people who are supposed to be friends, co-workers and family members - none of whom should be rude or hostile, imo.
I'll read the next one, but I'm really going to be looking for improv...more

I like this fun and quirky series. Having it set in New Orleans is a huge plus and that this one takes place right before the noisy and colorful Mardi Gras celebration is a perfect choice. The vivid descriptions of the hectic pace leading up to the festival, the food, costumes, parties, krewe society bashes and rich food makes the story come alive.
I enjoyed getting to see more of the Zydeco bakery and the people who work there. Showing some of the strife when working with so many creative individ...more

Great follow up to a first in a series! I loved the story and glad to see all my favorite characters are back! I was also pleased to learn a bit more about Rita, where she comes from and who raised her (Uncle Nestor and Aunt Yolanda). I'm also happy to see Rita making a name for herself and picking up the pieces to Zydeco. Miss Frankie is charming as ever of course and I was trilled to see that this one not only takes place down in the Big Easy, but also takes place during Mardi Gras! This book...more
This is the second in the series, and it was a good follow-up to the first book. I did find it a bit slow-paced in areas, but there were plenty of suspects to keep you guessing throughout the story. I did find it interesting to find out a bit more on Rita's background with her Aunt and Uncle, although I wish they could have picked a better time to visit with Rita! Overall, this was a fun read and I will be looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Rita and her cake business is hopping busy since Mardi Gras is quickly arriving. Then Rita gets a surprise visit from her aunt and uncle who raised her. Rita takes them to a big party she is hosting with Miss Frankie and a guest is found dead. Uncle Nestor is the prime suspect after the guest's wife blames Uncle Nestor.
