Monica was the first non-Chalet, hardback EBD I ever owned, so I have quite a lot of affection for it. Written when EBD was nearing or at her peak, in terms of quality, the plot picks up bits she used elsewhere (eg Heather Leaves School, Stepsisters for Lorna) and brings them together really rather neatly.

Brent-Dyer was born as Gladys Eleanor May Dyer on 6th April 1894, in South Shields in the industrial northeast of England, and grew up in a terraced house which had no garden or inside toilet.
