Written in a colorful style, but unfortunately focuses more on sensational anecdotes about celebrities of the period, especially its literary world, than on long term causes and effects. Another problem is that even though it seems to be aimed at a nonspecialist audience, avoiding technical language and leaving its sources uncited, it mentions without explanation lots of people who I at least have never heard of, and leaves lots of its quotations untranslated.
