The TimeRiders is a great book that has hooked me for the rest of the series. The blurb for this book is brilliant. How can you not be intrigued by this?

These three teens are saved from certain death and catapulted into a world of time travel and mystery. They become part of a secret organisation that ensures history is correct. Maddy and Sal take on the roles of the support team at their New York base, guided by their saviour and mentor, Foster. Liam is the poor guy who gets the job to travel through time to fix things, accompanied by a half-human half-techno miracle named Bob, who is the brawn of the team.

The world has gone crazy and the team need to find out why, by going back in time to fix the future. Liam and Bob have plenty of obstacles to overcome as they pass through time to search for the cause of altered history. Whilst Maddy, Sal and Foster are fighting their own battles in the changed world that it has caused. Even though they are in different time frames, the whole team need to work together to fix the problem.

I really enjoyed the story, I think that Scarrow has done a great job. This is an action-packed adventure that has plenty of intrigue and imagination. The plot is set across multiple time frames and works really well. I'm very keen to move onto the next book in the series .... and beyond. (I understand that the 7th book has just been released - I'd better get cracking so I can catch up).

For any of my usual Middle Grade followers, here's a tip. The target audience for this book is YA and there is violence in some parts, so I wouldn't recommend it for Middle Graders.

Oh My Jeez! This book, was amazing!
I loved almost everything about it, from the characters, the plot, to the writing style.
The characters where very well developed and relatable. I especially enjoyed how Scarrow didn't plain out give us the whole stories to all the characters but left some mysteries. I know there are many more books to the series and I'm super excited to start them.

Esatto, poco prima degli attentati che misero in ginocchio l’America e crearono un numero spaventoso di vittime. Ma dopo i primi momenti di disorientamento e di addestramento, devono subito mettersi al lavoro. Nel medesimo momento, nella New York del 2001, Sal, Maddy e Liam ricevono una scossa che li avvisa che qualcosa di preoccupante è successo. Sensazione confermata quando usciti dal “covo” trovano una nuova NY City ad aspettarli…una città grigia, monotona e repressa. Sottomessa ad un regime molto simile a quello nazista.
E’ il momento per i ragazzi di entrare in campo e sistemare il tempo!

Nonostante alcune incongruenze, situazioni al limite che mi hanno fatto storcere il naso un paio di volte, si tratta di un racconto molto appassionante. Adattissimo ai ragazzi, per farli avvicinare in un modo tutt’altro che classico alla storia, e per noi grandicelli per rispolverare avvenimenti in una chiave più divertente e spensierata.
Anche un modo per insegnare e far ragionare sulle possibilità e probabilità in cui stiamo spingendo il nostro futuro, quello che ci attende dietro l’angolo. Quello che stà portando il nostro pianeta e noi stessi in una situazione ingestibile.
Un libro che fa riflettere molto e bene. E allo stesso tempo diverte e fa sperare che ci sia sempre un’altra possibilitò, se si è in grado e si ha la volontà per cercarla.

I picked this book up at Books-a-Million, a bookstore I don't usually shop at. I had looked at it several times at other book stores, but I had never bought it until that night. I have since learned that if I look at a book several times, but only buy it later, I will probably love it, and this is no exception.

I began this with some excitement, but in the end, I have to say I was let down by the improbabilities in the story, particularly that these kids are put in charge of a really, really crucial organization (and especially so with essentially no training). Worse than this, none of the other field offices seem to be of any use whatsoever, leaving all the work of fixing time lines to be done by these selfsame teens - the rawest recrutis int he entire organization!

Yes, it’s a YA novel and it would be stupid to have one with no YA's in it, but honestly?! There were ways I could see of telling this same story and getting these same situations and results without taking such huge leaps of faith or staining it quite so brightly with hamfistedness.

There's pretty much no information related at all about the three main characters, given that they figure hugely throughout the story. They almost don't even interact with each other as normal teens would (is there such a thing as a normal teen?!). Why, for exmaple, was Liam, a 16 year old from 1912, considered to be the best candidate for a field agent? Why are we told effectively nothing about Sal's rescue from her death whereas we're party to both Liam's and Maddy's rescue? Why go to the trouble, expense, and risk of failure in creating a robot 'Bob' when they could have simply had a special forces soldier, a SWAT cop, or a CIA or FBI agent, for example?

I had originally thought this might be nice new series to get into, but then I read it and now I can’t see myself reading another of these. It’s borderline at best, and had it been smarter, I would have been willing to try another shot even with some of the problems it has, but as it is, I have better things to do with my time. This is the first YA story I can remember feeling this way about, actually. Most of the others have been acceptable even if they weren't exactly overwhelming. Some of them have been really great. So no, I can't recommend this series, even though it is enjoying success, unless your expectations are really low to non-existent and you're really not at all discriminating about the kinds of things you're willing to put into your mind.(less)

I was in a mood for some time-traveling action (probably because of 'Found') so I decided to pick up this book. It didn't disappoint me one bit. I really enjoyed it!

Sal, Maddy and Liam are very real and endearing characters and since they are from different time periods, their interactions are quite funny :P Poor Liam, he doesn't get what Sal and Maddy (and Foster) are talking about most of the time. Reading like a mash-up of I Am Legend, Robert Harris and HG Wells, this is a brilliant brilliant book. Three children are snatched from the jaws of death and brought to September 10 2001. Time Riders has a simple but brilliant concept: time police. The main characters, (aside from aforementioned android) are Liam, a boy who should have died on the Titanic in 1912, Maddy Carter, who should have died in a plane crash in 2010, and Sal Vikram, meant to have died in a fire in 2026. Instead, they became Time Riders.
So, the concept is great, and the story itself is pretty good- although I will stress, it gets very dark at times. There's a great deal of death, graphically described, and some really cringey moments of destruction and horror. Without spoilers, one character gets treated to an absolutely nightmarish end (although time travel rectifies this).
The problem? Scarrow seems to think big, but his actual writing was... well, I don't know. To me, it felt amateurish. He tends to tell rather than show, and occasional moments of descriptive prose feel forced and unnatural. Some writers err on the flowery side of writing, some on the plainer, and I think Scarrow's happiest without heavy description.
There were also some truly astounding puffs of unlogic that annoyed me. For instance: it's explicitly mentioned, and referred to a couple of times, that Liam has a fear of water and can't swim.
Yes. So he willingly joined the crew of the Titanic, did he?
That one really stood out to me, although there were others, and occasionally there were small historical slip-ups that irritated me too. For instance, Hitler's mentioned to have come to power in 1932- it was '33, and I don't think it would take more than a Google search to find this out. This particular error can't be blamed on them changing the time-line; or at least there's no such explanation given. Otherwise, a couple of minor overly contrived bits of good luck for the protagonists pulled the story through for a happy ending, but I didn't mind this too much; it just barely made sense, and otherwise, the book would have had a seriously depressing ending.
Great concept, not brilliant execution. I'll probably read the next one though, simply because my brother lent them to me. :D Free reading is not to be sniffed at.(less)

YA science fiction fans will love TimeRiders. They will love the three young teen main characters, the AI character, Bob, and the action packed crisis and climax. I picked this book up by chance - a freebie being offered amongst a bunch of other freebies at our local book shop. "Wächter der Zeit" ist der erste Band der "TimeRiders"-Reihe von Alex Scarrow.
Die Handlung spielt in verschiedenen Zeiten. Schlüssig wird hierbei gezeigt, welche Auswirkungen einzelne Handlungen in der Vergangenheit auf die Zukunft haben können.
Verschiedene Ereignisse werden in "Wächter der Zeit" beleuchtet, zum Einen das Attentat auf John F. Kennedy oder die Anschläge auf das World Trade Center. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt in diesem Band aber auf dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, der durch das Thema Zeitreisen einmal anders erarbeitet wurde. Was hätte passieren können, wenn Deutschland diesen Krieg gewonnen hätte? Diese Frage hat sich der Autor gestellt und eine neuartige, aber auch erschreckende Version der Vergangenheit, der Gegenwart und der Zukunft geschaffen.
Trotz allem bleiben die Handlungsstränge stets authentisch und schlüssig. Dabei besitzt diese Geschichte viel Spannung, denn die Spannungskurve ist konstant hoch angelegt und durch viel Action und diverse Facetten angereichert worden, dabei kann es auch blutig und brutal zugehen.
Überraschende Wendungen und Kurzweil halten "Wächter der Zeit" zusätzlich am Laufen und bieten so dem Leser unterhaltsame Stunden.

Die Protagonisten sind der Zeit, in der sie geboren worden, authentisch angepasst. Dementsprechend unterscheiden sie sich in ihren Verhaltensmustern und in ihrem Denken. Sie besitzen allesamt viel Charaktertiefe und bereichern die Story immens.

Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und fesselnd zugleich. Alex Scarrow hat aus einer interessanten Grundidee eine spannende Geschichte geschaffen, und mit seinem Schreibstil den Leser in die Handlung eintauchen lassen.

Das Cover besitzt so einige feine Details, die erst beim näheren Hinsehen zu erkennen sind. Zusammen ergeben sie ein passendes Cover, das sowohl das Thema, als auch die Zeitreisen nicht außer Acht lässt.

As someone who reads and reads and reads i have always said i'm not going to get sucked into the kids / YA market. EG Harry Bloomin potter market, its a kids book for kids and can be read by kids.

I'd give this a 3.5 if I could, but can't do half scores. Time Riders is a fun time travel adventure in the YA genre that will entertain if you like this sort of thing. I do. This is part one in a growing series of time travel adventures with the three teens who are rescued from certain death and turned into time jumping agents sent back into the past to correct or repair the current time frame. Donc, une écriture consistante qui ne m’a pas du tout laissé un vide, alors qu’il y a des jeunesses qui me laissent des vides niveau écriture, mais ici, l’écriture est de super qualité !
Pour les adultes n’aimant pas les écritures trop jeunesse, je pense que ce livre est vraiment pour vous, car c’est de la science-fiction avec une écriture qui allie la qualité et la quantité !

Le talent de l’auteur est vraiment incontestable dans la forme du roman, puisqu’il a très bien équilibré la partie description et introduction du sujet avec la partie action et intrigue qui m’a davantage intéressé ! Je dis cela, car lorsque je me disais “Ok, on a compris le fonctionnement, maintenant, un peu d’action !”. Eh bien, devinez quoi ?? Le début d’une intrigue s’est commencé à se formée ! Et je trouve que c’est super, d’avoir tout ce qu’on veut dans un livre, donc je peux dorénavant dire que c’est le COUP DE COEUR jeunesse !

Parlons des personnages qui sont vraiment très sympathiques ! Il y a Liam, Sal et Maddy qui sont les principaux personnages qui vont de l’enfance à l'âge adulte ! Cependant, tous les personnages sont attachants, ils pensent beaucoup de bien, n’ont aucun comportement énervant , on se dit qu’on aurait bien aimé être comme eux ! Ils ne sont même pas impliqués dans leur destin que leur fournit Foster. Donc, vous ne serez en aucun dérangé par des personnages méchants, car ce livre n’a que des personnages avec un bon fond !

Enfin, je passe à l’intrigue, qui concerne le voyage dans le temps que l’on pouvait comprendre avec le titre et la couverture assez représentative. Mais, bien sur, l’auteur a choisi de traité le temps d’une manière assez particulière, puisqu’il a inséré le fait que le futur aurait accès à la machine à voyage le temps, mais dans ce monde, les méchants pourraient l’utiliser à mauvais escient, donc les Time Riders sont crées pour protéger l’histoire !
Ainsi, nos trois personnages se retrouvent voués à cette mission, ils vont apprendre à manier le temps et l’analyse pour réparer ce temps en cas de fauteurs ! Mais bien sur, ce serait trop facile ! Donc, Liam est choisit exécuteur, il va donc dans le temps pour rapporter des informations, mais ce qui est comique dans sa situation, c’est qu’il vient de 1912 alors qu’il partira en mission après, donc, il ne connait pas forcément les lieux où il va !

Sinon, ils vont combattre les fauteurs de troubles avec l’aide de Foster, leur “enseignants” ! Ainsi, ils vont se retrouver devant la menace d’une guerre, ainsi, l’histoire est transformé, ils doivent la remettre à normale ! Mais l’auteur explique tellement bien ce phénomène qu’on s’imagine en se disant que ce serait horrible ! J’ai adoré le changement qu’il a pu faire, et j’espère qu’il trouvera de contextes si intéressants pour les autres tomes !

Ce changement n’est pas vu que de leur coté et c’est ce qui est super ! Puisqu’on voit aussi l’action du coté du “méchant” qui n’avait même pas de mauvais desseins en entament cette contamination historique, et c’est super de savoir qu’il y a des gens qui pense à d’autres choses qu’aux pouvoirs, puisque ce “méchant” va penser au réchauffement climatique, à la surpopulation de 2066 d’où il vient ! Donc, ce livre n’est pas seulement de la SF mais aussi un moyen facile de dénoncer le réchauffement climatique et pour laisser agir la prochaine génération que nous sommes! Message reçu LOL !

Donc, l’auteur a tellement bien fait ce livre, qu’il a mis tous les aspects de l’intrigue sans faire de répétitions ce qui est vraiment très bien, puisque j’avais assez peur de ça pour un récit à plusieurs voix !

La fin est vraiment très bien faite, puisqu’elle n’arrive pas tout de suite, le dénouement du livre se fait assez tardivement, donc on se demande même si vraiment il va y avoir une résolution ou si l’auteur a décidé de le continuer dans l’autre tome ! Donc, à la fin, nous avons une vraie fin qui arrive vraiment doucement, et j’aime ça ! Il réussit à nous donner des moments de doute pour pouvoir enfin nous donné sa réponse !

Donc, ce livre a une moral sur le réchauffement climatique, puisque Kramer qui a traversé le temps pour protéger cette terre avait beaucoup de raisons, la famine, l’impossibilité de respire l’air et encore d’autres problèmes immondes qui lui ont fait le déclic. Donc, vaut mieux protéger cette planète qui reste et restera toujours notre seul refuge dans cette dimension !

Donc, c’est un GROS COUP DE COEUR JEUNESSE dont je voudrais vraiment que les jeunes de mon âge (16 ans) puissent lire pour pouvoir comprendre ce que deviendrai un monde sans effort pour la planète et les risques qu’ils ont à prendre pour sauver cette planète !(less)

Well there you go! All of these books are 458 to 265.Quite long aren’t they! I really do recommend getting all of Alex Scarrow books.The historical detail is just amazing as well as the pacing. You never now what is going to happen,every story is linked well.It’s a series that are together and you can switch the order around and they will still make sense.I can’t wait until the new ones come out there going to be great!

The Time Riders series are long and very enjoyable they should keep your face in that one book every day.It all feels real like our there withe them saving the world,making the sure Nazis don’t role the world,the civil war ends,the brits don’t become invaded by the french and much much more!!

Over all this series is amazing,every book just great make sure you buy every one,you won’t waste your money!

I thought this would be just up my street due to its time-travelling nature, and whilst I knew it was aimed at the young adult market, that has never stopped me before. I very much enjoyed Harry Potter and that was aimed at children.

I did very much enjoy the concept and the story, and there were only a few bits that grated. Choosing Hitler seems like quite an obvious subject for time travel, which isn't bad, but is perhaps overused. Having said that, if it gets people interested in history, then...more

This book had a cool premise AND decent writing. It lived up to its promise as far as I'm concerned. An engaging read by British author Alex Scarrow. I'm only sad that I picked this one up on a visit to the UK, so the second book in the series won't hit the US for quite some time since the hard back of this first one isn't due to hit the US until this August :(

This isn't normally my type of thing, because, put it this way, I LOVE Fantasy novels and am even in the process of writing my own.

I finally decided to read something a bit different so I decided sci-fi and this was a novel that appealed to me.

This book had me debating between three and four stars, I loved the concept - it is a very me book - science fiction travelling back in time. And I loved the concept of TimeRiders patrolling the past making sure that history is not rewritten. Now I felt this book was very good - exciting, tense and thrilling, but then sometimes it seemed to drag a little, not that it was bad specifically, but it sort of dipped in content, it became a bit stagnant or peaked and then dipped a little. And I loved the concept of TimeRiders patrolling the past making sure that history is not rewritten. Now I felt this book was very good - exciting, tense and thrilling, but then sometimes it seemed to drag a little, not that it was bad specifically, but it sort of dipped in content, it became a bit stagnant or peaked and then dipped a little. I can't put my finger on it specifically but I felt sometimes it lacked its spark that had me excited throughout.

The book was introduced very well, the introduction of the three main characters who are chosen to become TimeRiders - Foster saving them moments before they die...very cool.

I liked the story - Second World War changing; Kramer (the wrong doer in the book) wanting to make the future world better by taking back technologically advanced weapons and trained mercinaries to help the Germans win the Second World War - preventing the world in the future becoming desolate and weak (in the year 2066 where Kramer originates from New York City is like a ghost town - the country has been damaged severely by depression and famine etc due to the economic crash etc.) And he, along with 24 other people want to prevent that from happening and they think that helping Hitler to win the war - and then taking over from him - will make the world a better place.

So when the three TimeRiders are first introduced to their job - training exercises - it is interrupted with an actual shift changing the world they are in - 2001 New York - to a country that looks more like a regimented controlled state.

The tree TimeRiders - Liam O'Connor, Sal Vikram and Maddy Carter and Mentor - Foster, not forgetting the support unit Bob are thrown into the thick of it as they are charged with putting history back to its original state.

I think this is a confusing book to try to explain and to rate, but I really recommend it because it is exciting, and I haven't read a new/current book like this before - it is steering away from the niche of paranormal romance which is in abundance, so it was a refreshing and exciting change. I am looking forward to the second installment due out in August this year as I like the characters, we have only really just been introduced to them - there wasn't really an opportunity to get to know them whilst they were saving the world so I would love to see what Alex Scarrow has in store for his next book. O storočie neskôr, v roku 2010 paluba lietadla vybuchla do povetria. Aj Maddy mala zomrieť pod rukami teroristov. Pár sekúnd pred výbuchom poslúchla starčeka a dostala druhú šancu. Pod jednou podmienkou. Sal Vikramová mala zomrieť pri požiari v budúcnosti v roku 2026. Avšak rovnako ako Liam a Maddy, aj ju postretla nová šanca. No nebolo to také jednoduché. Záchrana znamenala doživotné služby tajnej organizácie a život, ktorý poznali, už nikdy nebude taký ako predtým.

Ale... čo ak bude ich hlavnou náplňou cestovanie v čase? Ľudstvo vynašlo časostroj a každá zmena našich dejín by mohla mať fatálne následky do súčasnosti. Pretože ani ruku nemožno vytiahnuť von z vody bez toho, aby sme vytvorili čo i len malé vlny. Jazdci časom musia ochrániť naše dejiny a zneškodniť každého, kto sa ich pokúsi zmeniť. A... vtedy prichádza pán Kramer.

Keď prvýkrát otvoríte Jazdcov časom, privíta vás veľké množstvo krátkych kapitol, jedna s dátumom 1912, druhá pre zmenu s rokom 2066. Chaos, prebleskne vám hlavou. No potom sa začítate a zistíte, že nie všetko bude také, ako ste si možno mysleli. Zamiloval som si cestovanie časom. Zamiloval som si krátke kapitoly, ktoré vás nútili čítať a čítať až do samého konca. Zamiloval som si... Jazdcov časom.

Predstavte si chudáka Liama, ktorý sa narodil na začiatku minulého storočia a ktorý o našom svete nevie vôbec nič. Nebojte, neskôr sa, chudák, trochu asimiluje (čo bude naozaj vtipné, verte mi). Ďalej si predstavte robota, ktorý síce vyzerá úplne ako my, je z mäsa a kostí, no v hlave skrýva niekoľko jadrový procesor a pamäťovú kartu, bez ktorej by si toho veľa nepamätal. Keď už hovorím o Bobovi, ten patril medzi moje obľúbené postavy, pretože mi vždy na tvári vyčaril úsmev. Ale to je len zlomok z toho, čo postavy Jazdcov času ponúkajú.

Pravdepodobne to bude Scarrowov štýl, ktorý urobil Jazdcov časom mojou obľúbenou knihou. Naozaj, už sprvu ma jej tematika zaujala, keďže dejiny boli vždy mojou obľúbenou témou. Príbeh plynie strašne rýchlo a plynulo - dobre tomu dopomáhajú aj krátke kapitoly a veľmi dobre čitateľný štýl. V druhej polovici sa kniha mení na akčný trhák, v ktorom ide o holý život. Scarrowove slová vtedy budete doslova hltať. Na to, aby vytvoril svet Jazdcov časom, potreboval vynikajúcu fantáziu, ktorú však bezpochyby má.

Čo dodať na záver? Jazdci časom moje očakávania rozhodne predčili. Ak hľadáte akciu, nevšednú tematiku či knihu, ktorú budete milovať, ste na správne adrese. Dielo britského autora spĺňa všetko z vyššie spomenutého. A... ak by vás náhodou zaujímalo, kedy bude cesta Liama, Maddy a Sal pokračovať, bude to v júni, kedy vydavateľstvo Slovart pripravuje pokračovanie s názvom Dni predátorov. A pozor, navštívime dinosaurov! (less)

This one took me utterly by surprise. Initially, I thought it was an OK read. It held my attention quite nicely, but I didn't spend the day thinking about it as I sat at my desk working. But evening would come around and I'd pick it up for a quick read, only to find myself still reading well after mid-night.
