I find it difficult to review books in genres I don't follow closely, because I feel I don't have a lot to compare them to. It's also hard to review something when you know the author. Especially with poetry, I think there's a real tendency to hear the "I" of the speaker as the writer, even when that isn't always the case. Kampa has amazing formal dexterity-- some really surprising and terrific rhymes, in particular-- any many of the poems about relationships' end are heartbreaking. My favorites were the persona poems in the "Voices in My Head" section.

Stephen Kampa holds degrees from Carleton College and the Johns Hopkins University.

His work has appeared in the Hopkins Review, Southwest Review, River Styx, Subtropics, and Smartish Pace.

He currently lives in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he works as a musician with the band Stephen Kampa and the Pickups. Stephen is the 2012 Florida Harmonica Champion.

Cracks in the Invisible is his first book.
