A short picture book (30ish pages) with full colour pictures, both written and illustrated by Quentin Blake; we chose this book because we have been enjoying Blake's illustrations in Roald Dahl's books.

First published 1980, "Mister Magnolia" was the 1980 winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, an award "for distinguished illustration in a book for children". In 2007 "Mister Magnolia" was also listed in the Greenaway 50th Anniversary Top Ten.

I've just read Mr Magnolia by Quentin Blake to my two daughters at bedtime. They loved the rhyming of the story and by the third page managed to even join in with the rhyming..
Quite briefly, Mr Magnolia is the story of a lovely man who has a lot going on for him in life- he has a trumpet, two lovely sisters,a pond with frogs, parakeets, some very fat owls, lots of friends,a chute and a dinosaur ,but Mr Magnolia has just one boot all throughout the book.It seems really unfair that such a nice person...more

This book has a rhyming pattern throughout with each sentence only being a few lines long – this will make it easy for children to read in particular early years, KS1.

The book itself centres on Mr. Magnolia who has only one boot. We are introduced to all the thing’s Mr. Magnolia does whilst wearing only one boot – he goes swimming; visit’s his friends, juggles fruit! Towards the end of the book the pictures show us a little girl who has a present from Mr. Magnolia – you’ve guessed it, it is a ne...more

Mr Magnolia is a wonderful rhyming story about the marvellous Mr Magnolia who has a trumpet, two lovely sisters, a pond, some owls and a dinosaur. This already creates the image that he is not normal to have a dinosaur in his house. The one of my favourite things is that he only wears one boot. This always makes the children laugh. Then one day a mysterious parcel arrives. Key Stage one children love the energy and the humour of this boot. The book is best read aloud and appealing colourful illu...more

I read this during circle time with my years 2 class just recently. They were all fascinated by the vivid images and funny set of events. "Poor Mister Magnolia only has one boot"… This book’s structure is of a loopy and engaging rhyme. Mister Magnolia although a simple text, manages to include some more complex words that are made accessible by the colourful and active illustrations. The book provides brilliant opportunities to extend learning through questioning and could be useful for speech a...more

Life is a little perplexing, and fun is curtailed when you only have ONE boot!
Re-reading this book after a break of at least 10 years has left me wondering why. It would be a great book to read aloud at a rhymetime or storytime, and would be a perfect fit for a clothing or footwear theme (there are some wonderful shoe and boot picture books, unlikely as it sounds).
The illustrations are delightful (hence why

"Poor Mister Magnolia only has one boot"… This book is a loopy and engaging rhyme. Mister Magnolia has a simple structure and principle but manages to include some more complex words that are made accessible by the colourful and active illustrations. I think that this would be a perfect book for years one and two as it would provide excellent opportunities to extend learning through questioning and would be great for speech and language activities, as it would really spark imagination and discus...more

So many children’s books that I have not yet read….I want to read them all! Like this one, Mister Magnolia. Brilliant. Just brilliant. Who would not want to read this book over and over again? It’s so ridiculous. Such a silly, wonderful little book.

This is a wonderful rhyming book that is so charming and so funny that has the great quality of equally appealing to a wide range of ages (2-5). It is a very favorite at our house.

This book is about Mister Magnolia who is as happy as can be, except he is missing a shoe. The book uses onomatopoeia. Book also uses sur names for Mister as Mr. I could incorporate a lesson that teaches sur names and show students how Mister is shortened to Mr. Highlight punctuality as well.

I read this to my 30 year old son when he was little and we both loved the strongly rhythmic verse and ridiculous story. 'But Mr Magnolia, Mr Magnolia has only one boot'. It's great to see that it is still a favourite.
Blake's illustrations are marvelous. A children's classic

-many rhyming words
-Mr. Magnolia has only one boot, and there are many words that rhyme to boot
-this book can be used to teach rhyming as well as new vocabulary that some children might not be familiar with (such as newt, parakeets, immense)

Mister Magnolia has and does just about everything you can imagine but he only has one boot. The ending is a fun little surprise.

This was my all-time favourite book when I was growing up, and it hasn't lost any of its charm, its humour or its flair in the years since it was published. Mister Magnolia is a bit of a twit, and needs a lot of help to find his boot. Quentin Blake's illustrations are fun, colourful and irrepressible, and the lines and such flow and flair, you can't help but read it with the emphasis on the last word, i.e. very energetically! I still have my much-mended old copy from years ago, but I couldn't pa...more

Just beautiful and joyous. The owls alone are worth the price of the book.

I read this about 9 times a day. It's wearing a little thin but the little one loves it and rightly so.
